Scratched eye While two of my dogs were roughousing, one of them received a scratched eye. It is red, watery & swollen. He can barely open it! Since it is late, I would rather not take him into the emergency vet. Other than ice, is there anything else I can do for it tonight? |
You could try eye drops and a cold compress. I would definitely call the vet in the morning to get some antibiotic drops so that the dog does not get an eye infection. |
When Rosie scratched hers the vet gave her drops and an ointment. I think they were both antibiotic? I can't remember for sure but it seems like my sister in law told me to use triple antibiotic cream before I went to the vet. Does anyone else know if that is ok? I hate to tell you that and it be wrong. The best advice would be get to the vet in the morning. |
Try holding a warm washcloth on it for as long as he will let you tonight a few times. Get him into the vet as soon as possible tomorrow for meds. We had the same thing happen here and after some meds everything was all better. |
If he's scratched his cornea it's very painful. I'd take him to the er clinic tonight. |
He doesn't act like he is in any pain. It just looks bad. In fact, he is wanting to play again, but I made them settle down! |
If you can, go to the ER vet for pain meds and antibiotic drops tonight. Depending on how deep the scratch is, it may be crucial that you have the eye checked tonight. Otherwise, make sure your vet gets you in first thing in the morning. Be careful with water. Maximo went through something similar recently and water was very painful on his eye. Bright light is also painful. Use plain sterile saline; no eyedrops with any additives. |

is it his eyelid or his cornea/eyeball that was scratched? i've been through two scratched corneas with Soph. she had a bad habit of jumping off the bed and landing on the cat.....the sound asleep cat....who didn't react well. Corneal scratches are nothing to delay treatment on and the vet's instructions should be followed to the letter. the scratch can ulcerate and cause long term vision problems and vision loss. |
Since I have applied a cool compress, the swelling has gone down some & he is opening it alittle wider now. I brought him into a well lit room & looked at it closer. It appears that the bottom lid may be where the scratch is... not the eye itself. Whew!!! It really scared me there for a minute!! |
I would still see the vet and have the dye test done to make sure the cornea wasn't scratched. Corneal scratches are often not visible to the naked eye. Antibiotics may still be necessary either way. |

Hopefully, you were able to see the vet today. Please update us when you find something out. |

This baby has to have the dye test. If there is a scratch close to the eye (lid etc) they'll likely give antibiotics so that an infection doesn't harm the eye itself. |
You can scratch and eye and not even see it. VET doe sure. I had a dog that I was playing with and he accidently scratched mine....same symptoms....and it was a bad tear. |
Last year I was bathing Kayla and noticed one of her eyes was red and she could hardly open it. I thought maybe I had gotten water in her eye but as soon as I blow dryed her I ran her up to the vets. It was an ulser. I think what happened they were playing and one of the other dogs must have hit her in the eye with their paw. After a few days of treatment she was fine but I keep those drops on hand all the time. All 4 or ours are bad to swat at each other. |
