Our sick little Pookie
 
We just got our first house dog Pookie in November and she is very sick. She got sick over the Christmas holiday and we took her to the vet on Monday. They kept her and did bloodwork and etc. and said her sugar had dropped dangerously low but by Tuesday evening she was doing better and they sent her home. She never got to feeling much better and by Friday she wouldn't eat or drink anything. We took her back to the vet on Saturday and he said her pancreatic enzymes were way to high and she was dehydrated. By Monday she was not much better but that evening the vet said she was feeling better and even ate a few bites. On Tuesday morning I called and they said she had took a turn for the worse overnight. I went down there and she was having seizures. They did more blood work and gave her lots of meds but the seizures continued throughout the day. It has been horrible. They are keeping her heavily sedated for 24 hours to see if she improves any but said it doesn't look good. We are so very sad! Has anyone else had this kind of problem?

I'm sorry to hear all this. I don't have any experience with it but I'm sure there are many YT'ers on here that have and will post a few words of comfort for you. Please keep us posted.

I am so sorry. It is so painful for us when they are sick. I really hope Pookie pulls through. Please keep us posted.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I've asked a few people that have a lot of experience to come and read this. I'll say a prayer. Hang in there.

I am so sorry that you little Pookie is so sick. Did the vet say what is wrong with Pookie? Please keep us posted on how he is doing. :hug:

I'm very sorry to hear about Pookie. It seems there is so much going on with her. Sometimes if the sugar drops low that can cause seizures but the fact that they are continuing when she is in a hospital setting seems very troubling. I only hope and pray that the doctors can find out what is wrong and try to help her. Please come back and keep us posted. :(

I am so sorry about your baby. Sometimes these little guys surprise you and pull right out of it. I think its really important to have a vet you trust and you know they know what they are talking about. Will be praying for your baby that they can find out what is wrong and everything will be good for this little one.

Thanks to all of you! The only answer we have so far is pancreatitis. Another vet took a look at her yesterday and said he was gonna try to come up with more answers because he thinks there is more going on than just the pancreas problem. We are hoping for a miracle for our little Pookie. We all love her so much.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. Did you contact her breeder? Did the Vet. run a bile acid test to see if it could be a liver shunt? Please keep us posted.

Exactly....

The Yorkie breed is at greater risk of Liver Shunt and or MVD than all other breeds combined.

Your Vet should be doing a Bile Acid Serum to see how the liver is functioning.

Seizure are one of the main symptoms of a Liver Shunt :(

My little guy has pancretitis. The first attack he had was so very scary. He would not respond and his eyes rolled in the back of his head. We got him to the animal ER and they discovered it was pancretits. He is on a very strict diet. Hills WD dry and a little bit of Hills WD can to take with his meds. That has been five years ago and it scares me anytime he gets sick with anything. I hope your little one will be okay. They are such an important part of our lives.

Pookie is doing a little better. The docter said she isn't out of the woods yet, also he said that their trying to get her to wake up slowly and they think it may be a liver shunt.

There are many threads here about liver shunt. But you do want to get the best specialist and diagnostics around. Many dogs with liver shunt can go on to live healthy lives.

Also once the ddx is confirmed your breeder should be made aware. LS is genetic, and the breeder needs to know what has and is happening.

You mentioned nothing about the age of Pookie. Also why did the vet now say thinking liver shunt, when the first examination of blood work came back normal?

Did they actually do BATS the second time around?

I'm glad to hear Pookie is doing a little better. I am praying for her. Has your doctor talked about why they think it is a liver shunt ? Are they basing this on seizures or on bloodwork?

Having a Liver Shunt is NOT a death sentence. #1 the Vet should do a Bile Acid Test to see liver function, this will give a very good indication of liver function. The higher the Post# (over 100) the greater the chance of a Liver Shunt. #2 once this is done, you should start to look for a speciality surgeon that is familiar with small breed dogs and liver shunts. Not sure if U of Tenn is close to you or not, but as far as Liver Shunt surgeries go, they (Dr. Tobias) is the best - you can search all of YT and google that will back this up. Plus, U of Tenn is very reasonable with the costs. #3 you will need to notify your breeder, and see what you contract says, you may be able to get a refund of your pups purhcase price that you can put towards the surgery cost. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THIS PUP BACK - the breeder will most likely simply put the pup to sleep (as most do not want to be bothered - so sad) #4 We are all here for you. There are TONS of liver shunt babies here on YT ;)

I was so upset at the time of posting that I did forget to mention the age of our little Pookie she is 2 years old. There was another vet that questioned my husband and checked Pookie and he is the one who suspected a Liver Shunt. She is still recovering at the vets but seems to be improving some. She is now eating and drinking some but is still not able to walk (she is still wobbly). Today they did hear a rattling in her chest so started her on more med. It has been quite a long road to recovery already. We miss her here at home so much! We do want her to be well when she comes home but it is lonely without our little baby. We love her so much!

Just got a call about Pookie. The nurse said that Pookie has been walking in her cage and that she sat her on the floor and that she would walk around, but that she was still a little wobbly. She is still eating and drinking like a little pig. Also, she said she wouldn't be suprised if Pookie gets to come home tomorrow.

Update on Pookie. She got to come home but just overnight b/c she started vomiting some blood. Took her back to the vet and they changed her meds again so we are hoping she will be doing better real soon! She was on Baytril and Flagyl when she got to come home so I'm not sure if that was to hard on her little belly or what. Anyway we are continuing to pray that our little Pookie will be on the road to recovery real soon. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers!!

I am so sorry that your baby is so sick. I know it is devastating to have to go through this. I pray that an answer is found and your baby soon feels better.
