HELP for new sick fragile puppy

Hello I'm new in this because i need some help. I get as gift before two day a male baby toy Yorkie.
He is about two months year old (20-10-2010) and only 520 gr.
He had vomiting and diarrhea so i take him to the veterinary and told me that he has hastrendedical problems and he is dehydrated. So he gave him Dextrose (i have to give him every 3 hours, that will be the only liquids he will drink) and Primperan for the vomiting.
Now his eyes are stick closed. (thing he get a cold).
Please..i'm so sad and afraid for him..(i try all the time not to cry). You think he will be ok? Does anybody had the same problem?
I already have a 3 years old male Yorkie, but he wasn't that sensible as a baby (maybe because hee was 800 gr. at 2 months year old and now he is 5,5 kg.)

yorkieusa 01-01-2011 06:31 AM

You need to take him back to the vet. It sounds as though he has more problems. Use a warm, wet washcloth to clean around his eyes. Take him to the vet as soon as possible. Let us know what you find out.

 good advice

I am so sorry that your little one is sick keep him nice & warm and see his vet asap

Ringo1 01-01-2011 06:40 AM

Little tinies can dehydrate easily and hypoglycemia can also be an issue. Time can be of the essence; so please get him back to the Vet asap.

Fragile sick puppy

Thank you very much for the quick reply..
I'm waiting for the vet to contact me what time i can go now in the afternoon (because of the festivities they are all close until Monday). I'm cleaning it with warm water..(he will give me a cream i think,to put on his eyes 3 times per day) .
Yesterday i gave him a little boiled chicken and he was so happy, immediately he was very better and almost playing a little, but after 4 hours he had vomiting the chicken.
Puppy is sleeping almost all the time...and i keep the house warm for him.

Ringo1 01-01-2011 07:24 AM

If he is still vomiting; I really hope the Vet can get you in before Monday. I don't want to scare you but, if he is that tiny, a lot of very bad things could happen by then ~ especially if he still cannot keep anything down.

Is there an emergency vet that can see him?

He is a very small pup for his age. He needs to eat regularly or he will go downhill fast. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is a real concern. Nutri-Cal is a good product to help prevent this. If that's not available to you, karo syrup or even pancake syrup will work. Your vet had already given you dextrose and that is for keeping the blood sugar up. Talk to him about using one of the things I just mentioned. A little dab a few times a day will help him.

I have no idea what hastrendedical means. I tried looking it up and got nothing. Is the baby on any sort of antibiotic? There are some that can be given to a pup. Has the pup been given a fecal test to check for parasites?

If the pup is having trouble holding down the chicken, you may try feeding him less, but more often. In his condition, he should be eating a little something every few hours. You could try shredding the chicken or putting it in a blender. This may help him to digest it better. If you saved the broth from cooking it, use a little of that with it.

Hopefully you can see the vet today. If he's still dehydrated, the vet can give him sub-q fluids (injection under the skin) to help with that and can give you the supplies you need to do it at home. He can also show you how to do it.

Not sure what exact problem your baby has, but nutrition and hydration must be provided to him. He is much too small to have a setback.

Best of luck with your little one.

Please take him back to the vet. As far as the eyes closed, it is from being sick. You need to take warm water on a soft cloth and wipe them off to get all the gook off of them and they will open. They are stuck closed from the yuk. What antibiotic is he on? I went through this twice. My little girl that I have now we picked up Tuesday she's 16 weeks old and has upper repiratory infection and ear infections. She a pound and a half and is on .2 miligrams of Clavamox twice daily, and otimax in each ear twice daily. And, thankfully is doing great now. She too has her eyes stuck together in the morning, but the antibiotics will clear that up as well. Try to get your little one to eat some boiled chicken, with the broth. He is very very young. Should not have left mom yet. You can lose him if you are not careful. PLEASE I'll say it again, PLEASE take him back to the vet. Keep him warm, carefully, clean his eyes as needed to keep the yuk out and his eyes open with warm water on a soft clean cloth, try to feed him some chicken with broth. I'm sorry and I hope he is ok. P.S. also try to get a stool sample. The Diaareah can be coccidia or a another parasite. The vomiting, too is not good. keep nutrical on hand and check his gums to make sure they are not white or sticky.

Hi again everybody.. Fortunately my husband know the vet and he opened just for us, he make him injection under the skin for the sugar in the blood (i think) and also he make him a antibiotic injection.(like yesterday).
The vet gave me for his eyes, drops Tobradex (3 times per day) and water drops (like normal tear drops). And to try like you said small quantity of chicken. Also i will give him tonight little Primperan to try to calm his stomach.
Tomorrow Sunday he will open the vet again to check him...
Thank you all again for the support you give me..

Patti 01-01-2011 03:32 PM

I am glad you were able to get the vet to see him. I hope he feels better soon, Thanks for the update.

yorkieusa 01-01-2011 03:53 PM

I'm so glad you could get in. You could also try to give him some chicken broth, without salt, in a dropper or syringe, if he's not drinking. I had to do that with one of mine when she was pretty sick. It wasn't long before it had helped settle her stomach and she was back to eating. Just a suggestion. Let us know how he does. OK?

AlexandraK 01-02-2011 03:56 AM

Good morning everybody,
yesterday before to go to bed my little baby wake up and run on the carpet moving his tail  !! So I gave him one tea spoon chicken (smaller quantity) and he loves it... fortunately until today he didn't vomit it !( I will continue that way : small quantity more often). I also give him yesterday night Primperan (syrup for vomiting) and about 8 in the morning he vomit little brown color again (but not the chicken) so give him again little Primperan and i always continue 2,5-3 ml Dextrose each 2 hours. Both drops (normal tear drops & Tobradex drops) that vet gave me help him..he open his eyes more often now. Vet said me, to be careful of the light because the problem with his eyes can result that he is afraid of the light. Today Sunday the vet will open again for my little baby to check him.

Thank you very much for the advise about the chicken..it worked !!
Sorry for troubling you all (with gastrendedical) i think the right word in English is : gastrointestinal problems (problem with his stomach).
My baby came traveling by plane from Hungary to Greece (i think they didn't put him in a very warm bed..!! and get cold)
Today i will tell the vet about the medicine you all told me.
Thanks again very much to all of you !!

So good to hear your baby is feeling some better

Woogie Man 01-02-2011 05:57 AM

It's great to hear he's showing some improvement! Hope he continues to do well.

One thing I would caution you about. He shouldn't get any vaccinations until he is well and thriving. Your vet probably wouldn't do it anyway, but a sick puppy should not be given vaccinations.

AlexandraK 01-02-2011 12:48 PM

Hi again everybody,
went to the vet this afternoon and now he give me a powder (Royal Canin-Rehydration Support) that I have to mix with water to give him every one hour. Also three times per day I will give him now, a finger of Royal Canin-Recovery food. Dextrose 3 times per day. And to continue the drops in the eyes of course ..I asked the vet if there is a possibility that this with his eyes (that they close and they are not so clear inside) can leave a problem like blind ..and he answer me that no and that is good that the eyes are most of the time wet and not dry.
Vet says that he see him a little better and like stabilized. My little baby is trying hard.. :)(

jrsygal37 01-02-2011 12:51 PM

I'm so happy he is doing better. I too had my little girl to the vet again today. Her throat is scarlette color and ears still have middle ear infection, but doing better. I hope our babies get better soon. E.

AlexandraK 01-02-2011 12:59 PM

Sorry, forget to mention that tomorrow i'll start Maalox syrup 3 times per pay for his stomach. And Primperan only if his vomiting. He just walked a little :) and go back in his bed.

AlexandraK 01-02-2011 11:35 PM

Hi everybody...here it's 09:23 ,had a bad wake up today..my baby wake me up at 07:45 because he was crying (1st time) he couldn't keep his head and stand alone, and had like shaking for a little..I gave him immediately dextrose and went to the vet. Jim, you always give such good advise. Did you see his pictures? He's tiny. I think she said around 10 weeks. Hydration is very important, you will have to give him around the clock care until he grows stronger. Good luck and please keep us updated about this little fellow.

Ringo1 01-03-2011 07:13 AM

Aww poor baby. We are all thinking about him and praying he gets stronger. Keep a very close eye on him and it's good your vet is monitoring him closely.

One week-end when Luce was just a pup; she had liver issues and was very sick. I was so afraid and sick with worry. I had my cousin come over on Sunday to let me out of the house for a while. I felt like Lucy was picking up on my sad vibes; I had been holding her and crying all week-end.

I came home and Liz had gotten her to eat some chicken and rice and she was bouncing around. Liz didn't have as much invested as I did so she could see things more objectively and be upbeat for her.

Good Luck with your little one. Please keep us posted.

Patti 01-03-2011 08:03 AM

I hope your baby shows more improvement today. Keeping positive thoughts for his recovery.

yorkieusa 01-03-2011 08:20 AM

I'm sorry you had to leave him. Perhaps he'll get better and you can bring him back home.
