Need hope I have a litter 4 Yorkie babies 3 weeks old 3 are doing great ..the runt of the litter ws doing great until this morning I noticed he was very tired and would not eat he is only 4 oz his siblings are 10 oz or bit more.I took him to the vet and temperature was normal pee and pooping good.. palet looked good . I am feeding a bit every 1-2 hours when he wakes up and cries... keeping him warm and mom wont leave him alone licks and cleans him. I have him on antibiotics in case its something viral...I think he seems a bit stonger but it might be wish full thinking..anybody have a happy ending to there story like this. |
I hope he makes it. the happy ending would be he grow up to be a great furbaby for somebody special. |
The littlest of my last litter (hand fed) did not seem like he was going to make it. The vet told me he might not. But I was determined. I fed him with a dropper to make sure he was getting nutrition. Eventually, he learned to latch on and drank from a bottle like the others. Even though yours is older, you can still use the dropper. Then you know nutrition is getting in. With everything else looking good, adequate nutrition is the most important thing I can think of for you to control. Do you have a little Nutricall (drops or the puppy gel)? I would rub a tiny bit of that on his gums a couple times a day (ask vet if they approve). I did that with my tiny one. I just did not want him to deal with hypoglycemia -- it becomes a catch22 as the less they eat, the weaker they become and the less they feel like eating. Keeping the blood sugar up with the Nutrical helps a lot. Keeping him warm is also important. Don't let that body temp dip. A heating pad or Cuddle Cat (stuffed toy with a heating bag and heart that beats) could help if they are not warm enough. Edit: Just realized I did not say what to feed in the dropper! You still want him to nurse when posible, but to augment, use some Goat's Milk mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Walmart has been carrying goat's milk here. You don't want to take over the feedings, just try to give an extra one here and there to make sure he is getting something in. If he won't nurse at all, then you may have ot give complete feedings. |
Maybe supplementing with goat's milk for additional fortification? I would think that with the mother paying special attention that that is a really good sign. Usually the mother gives up on pups she deems a lost cause, doesn't she? |
Amount to feed is 1 cc per ounce of body weight every 2 hours for a newborn. Since your guy is so small, I might go with that. But as I mentioned, only when he does not nurse. If you see him nurse, then wait 2-3hours, see if he is nursing again, if not, then feed. Again, might want to run this by the vet just to be sure since he has seen the little guy and knows there is a problem. |
He wont nurse at all now . He is being fed through a dropper and he is swallowing and drinking enough . He seemed to be doing alot better crawling but this last hour very limp not sure if he is just sleeping. Not sure if something internal is not working I just feel so helpless.I was hoping the antibiotic would help but I would think it would take a day or two for that to work if its a virus. Hopefull I can keep him alive through the night and the medicine will have time to kick in... |

Yes he will eat 4 cc every 2 hours I can see him kind of lickin it in He has perked up again so my hopes are up again. I not sure if we have nutrical I am in B.C I just got what the vet recomended. |
He is still hanging in not sure about me no sleep last night ..A little bit perkier but not much |
Antibiotics do not treat viral infections and should never be used without a prescription and for a specific condition. In addition to promoting drug-resistance, antibiotics also kill off the good bacteria in the GI system needed for digestion. BTW- Nutrical is a glucose supplement, not a food. |
I was just following my Vet's advise...doesnt matter now the little guy past away last night . No happy ending here..I knew in my mind this would happen but my heart was hopping for a miracle.... |
I'm so sorry that you lost your little guy. |
Very sad........... |
