My Cooper took Benadryl for allergies for a while and it did nothing. He now takes Zyrtec, which helps dramatically. Perhaps you can try that, with the consent of your vet.

Just a thought could she not actually be scratching her face from and itch but rather something caught in her teeth, mouth. Not enough to cause coughing but enough to be buggin her? How do her eyes look? could she have gotten something in her eyes. If the benedryl isn't working there might be something else going on.

That's where I would start. Change to the name brand and see if it stops. It could be that one of the inactive ingredients in the generic is causing issues.
If that does not work, perhaps you can call the vet and try a different antihistamine.

Nothing in her teeth or cheeks, eyes look fine, a little red around the edges. Vet said this was a sign of allergies either from relocating or from the other dog in the house. Said that Benadryl would clear that up. In the past, her redness and itching had cleared up, this time I used a generic brand thinking it would do the same...

My WIfe and I agreed to stop using it and wait a few days then try the name brand. As I said, the more I think about it, the more it seems like that is the culprit... You may be right, one ingredient missing or added is enough to drive a person bonkers, so i can imagine what she is going through...

My son had a reaction to a generic medicine when he was young and ended up hospitalized. He had taken the name brand without a problem, so those things do happen. Those liquid meds have all sorts of different flavorings and other things in them.

Well, so far today she has napped quite a bit. Her ears are still floppy, but I know the last time she was like this it was because she was depressed. In a way, this is a good sign. She is eating, all be it not her dry food, but eating nonetheless. She will be getting new dry food tomorrow as she goes through these phases where she tires of specific foods... She has actually gone almost 2 years on this food, where she went through 2 or 3 in her first year with us. Vet told us it was no big deal, some animals just get tired of food and want something different. Anyway, I am hoping that tomorrow will be a better day. She will be going for a ride, and she loves going "bye-bye". So hopefully this will lift her spirits... Will post more later or tomorrow!! Thank you for all the help and well wishes for her...

I hope the generic benedryl is what was causing her problems. That would be an easy fix. I'm sorry she is so miserable. I'll be checking in to see any updates. I can tell you both love her dearly. They really are very special little doggies. Sending you all the very best!:)

My Westie has bad allergies and the benadryl did not help him either. Zyrtech seemed to help him better; along with a soothing cortisone shampoo that my Vet prescribed. If things are really bad; we go with a step-down dose of prednisone - but we don't often have to go there.

I hope that you can find the cause of these problems.

I had forgotten about the cortisone shampoo. I remember using that in the summer once in awhile when my lil Muffin got itchy. I also occasionally used hydrocortisone spray if she had an itchy spot (that she couldn't lick). It did help.

First of all, thank you for standing up for yourself, I don't know why people are so quick to judge. There should be a rule on here about opening your brain before you open your mouth!

Benadryl given continually can cause dryness from the antihistamine.
Also ear infections cause puppies to rub their ears and faces on what ever they can. Redness is one sign of ear infection but also is smell. Smell the inside of her ears, each one. An infection will give a stronger odor. Another thing is with the antihistamines drying her out her eyes may be bothering her from lacking moisture. Cut back on the Benadryl a little and see if the rubbing stops. Good luck with your baby, I know you will take good care of her.:)

I think this is a great place to start as well. LadyJane is very knowledgeable as well as sensible in her suggestions. Hopefully it is nothing more than just changing from a generic to name brand. Please keep us posted. :)

Help for a very sad Belle
 

I just needed to stick this in here somewhere hoping somone has an idea to help my baby Belle. Since the day we brought Belle home at 12 weeks and 2 pounds she has been attached to her big brother TJ our 85 pound Lab. He was her security, her playtoy, her everything. TJ was 13 and had Cushings disease, he was beginning to get sicker and doing odd things he had never done before.The vet said we could operate and remove the tumor and try all these different medications. HE IS 13, why would we put him through that?? We finally had to put him down about 3 weeks ago. We took Belle with so she would know where TJ went instead of looking and waiting for him. After he was gone, she sniffed him and kept pushing at him to get up, it was so sad I still cry alot. We moved about 2 weeks later and Belle has developed severe seperation anxiety. I have not left her alone for 1 minute. Either my DH or myself is with her all the time. When my husband goes to work she lays by the door and cries. I try to keep her busy but sometimes it's hard to keep her attention. Any suggestions what I might try to help her? I would love to get another puppy for her but the cottages we live in don't allow dogs unless your doctor says they are needed for your health. Belle is what keeps my depression from going to deep. Any help would be so appreciated, I can't bear the thought of leaving her alone.:(
