now passing blood About a week ago Pippin was throwing up specks of blood. This is his 3rd episode in 6 months. He went on antibiotics and other meds. I put him on a bland diet on Saturday. He was great yesterday and this morning. His eyes were bright and he was bouncing around. I came home tonight and he ate, and after he pooped. Then he started pooping pure blood. I have a call into the vet. I asked the assistant about tests but I don't think he can run any but the x-rays there. I'm waiting for him to call me back. I don't think they could do any tonight because he ate dinner about a half hour ago. He is acting fine. He doesn't seem to have any discomfort. Keep him in your prayers that they can find out what is wrong with him. |
By pure blood, do you mean liquid red blood? If so, I'd be on my way to the vets office with him in tow rather than waiting for a call back. |
Watery blood. The vet does know and he told the girl he would call me back when he has a chance to review his file. He didn't say to bring him right in. I don't think they could run any kind of test because he just ate, except for a blood test, and the last time they ran a blood test everything was normal. |
I called the vet because I know they are getting ready to close and she said they are running very behind and he will call me. I know of another vet who is open for several more hours if I have to take him in. If you looked at him you woulnd't think there was anything wrong with him. He doesn't act uncomfortable, and his sides and stomach aren't tender. I'm not saying he's fine. I'm only a half a mile from the vet. I just called right now to see if I should go up there so when he does review his file I will be there, and she said just to wait until he calls me. |
Hope everything is ok so sorry |

I spoke with the vet. He said to keep giving him the medications we had plus another one we had stopped. I'm suppose to give him pedilite every hour. If he acts the least bit lethargic then take him to the emergency vet. I'm to call him tomorrow morning. He said there is nothing else they could give him right now, except to make sure he is hydrated. If I can keep giving him the fluids he should be fine, if he won't take them from me than to take him in. I just got home with the pedilite and he took 5ml with no problem. He loves his amoxi in the syringe, and he thinks this is another treat. I don't plan on sleeping tonight. Any little sign he isn't himself and we're off to the emergency vet. |
Hoping the medicine kicks in and he feels better soon. |
maybe he could lay down with you that way you would know if he is all right |

I'm still wondering what the next step will be. The vet said we could do an x-ray and see if there is a foreign object in his stomach. We could do barium? He also suggested a exploratory and he could take a biopsy. Another option is sending us to a specialist in San Francisco or Sacramento. He asked me the same thing he asked me the last two times this happened. Am I sure he didn't get into any rat poison. I have never put any out in the house. He and Marley are never left out in the yard without me being there. I did catch Pippin trying to pick up a hornet tonight, and he dropped it and I stepped on it. He has done that before. I wish I had thought of that when I talked to the vet. Could he have gotten stung before? Could it have put poison in his system. I wish Pippin could talk. He could tell me how he feels. I thought of giving him some pumpkin, but I forgot to ask the vet if it mattered tonight. When he went potty this morning and last night his stool was normal. I don't understand how things can change so drastically. I read that if they throw up blood it's in the small intestine, and if they pass blood it is in the large intestine. He went from one to the other. What does that mean? I wish it was day time so I could ask the vet more questions or have him examine Pippin. |
Sending prayers for little Pippin. How is he this morning? |

i am sorry to hear that pippin is not feeling well again; hope he's better today. good luck |
He is acting fine this morning. He even chased Marley around the yard. I gave him the pedilite every hour until 11 and then every 3 hours, last night. He never went potty again, not even this morning. My daughter is home for another hour and then I'll probably run home at 10. I'm only 5 minutes from home. I don't know if I should call another vet today and have someone else check him, or take him into mine. It seems like they would be able to tell something by examining him. I wish my vet would just tell me what I have to do next instead of throwing options at me. Maybe that is common. My friend took her dog to another vet last week, and they gave her a list of tests with prices on them. She was suppose to choose what test for they would run. I guess if you chose the test you can't say they ran unnecessary ones. I'm still thinking about the x-ray to see if there is a foreign object in him. If there was would he be fine for 3 months at a time? |
so sorry to hear about this little baby still not getting better! has pancreatitis been ruled out? i will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers & hope your little one gets well very very soon! it is so hard when they are sick! |

Not necessarily. It's one thing to rule out, but you need to look further for things like IBD. If you read the OP's description, he has had previous episodes of this that would rule out a foreign body. Good overview on IBD, including history and tests. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Dogs |

And if the vomiting and blood is from Pancreatitis, it is best just to watch TV and read a good book, as doing nothing is the best form of medicine. I am glad you were not a Corpsman in Nam! |
yes the inflammation can be cause by something he ate; however even if the bleeding stops the inflammation is not going anywhere; and any little thing (even stress) can trigger another flare up. so please he needs to be seen by a vet asap. |

The vet called this morning to check on Pippin. He doesn't want to make any changes right now until we get this under control. Then he wants to do an x-ray to rule out a foreign object. If that is negative to send him to a specialist in San Francisco. I'm thinking of asking him when he's better to just refer me to the specialist. I know it would rule out one more thing, but I think if it was a foreign object there wouldn't be 3 months between of no problems. I mentioned to him predisone, and he said he had been thinking about that but he doesn't want to do anything else right now. I told him about the hornet last night, and that I think Pip ate one a week or two ago, and he said that could have triggered this. He said stress also could have caused it. My daughter had brought over her dog a week ago and he kept taking Pippin's toys away from him, and Pippin is such a sissy he wouldn't go over and try and get it back. He just would go to my daughter and cry for her to go get it. The trowing up started that night. I just don't want to see him go through this again. Every time it has been more intense and lasted longer. |

I know we still have to get to the bottom of what is wrong with him, but just to see him feeling good again is a relief. Thanks for everyone's advice and good wishes. |
