scared and worried(my first time here)
 

:confused: Hi everyone! I am a new mommy to my 2 awsome yorkies who are already 16 mo old! hard to believe. I have cruised this site before and admired everyones stories. I knew that if I reached out to the yorkie lovers of the world someone will reach out. Here is my situation. I woke up Friday morning to 3 piles of vomit and I could tell right away max was acting weird....Took him to the vet where they said to take him to hospital for X-rays. Didnt find anything...followed by an ultra-sound. nothing. Doc was not convinced so they cut open my lil boy to look more and low and be hold...NOTHING. blood work came back clean woth the exception of low protien levels which is not something to be alarmed. so yesterday the diagnosis was pancreatitis and gastronitis. she said now that they could stat using the drugs they couldnt before things would hopefully turn for the better now that we have a diagnosi. Only this morning he is only like 1% better. His belly is still vey gassy and full and the vet is not sure why. we think he is just going to recover and heal slowly b/c afterall he did just have sugery. HAS ANYBODY EVER EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING? this is my first pet and i may be overreacting but he is in icu 2 for gosh sakes. they are going to try to feed him today to c if his intestines work so cross ur fingers. I just wish his belly would get better. Am i worring too much? They took a lil piece of his intestines for a biopsy altho I dont know what it can b. I never knew i could luv him soooo much. he is my baby. His brother bosco misses him too. thanks everyone!!!

How was the diagnosis of pancreatitis made?
What were the protein results? Low protein should not be written off as nothing.
What did the vet biopsy and did everything come back normal?

Am I reading this right? the vet did exploratory surgery before ruling out pancreatitis which can be discovered in a blood test? I sure hope I'm wrong.

If its pancreatitis - then make sure lots of fluids and serve small low-fat meals. Lots of posts on pancreatitis.

Do you need a new vet?

We are here for you but explain a little more about your vet cutting open your baby before running any test. Please be careful. We have lots of members who have been thru pancreatitis. Keep us updated

WOW, is all I can say!!! I cant believe a vet would do surgery when pancriatitis is easily be diagnosed with a simple blood test!! My dog got it when she was about a year old , I took her to the vet, after a very simple blood test she was give sub q fluids and put on a very basic diet for a week which was boiled chicken and white rice. If I were you I would check the content of your current dog food and make sure the " fat content " is on the lower end I switched to 12% and everything has been fine since. My guess would be that someone gave your dog a treat or human food , that caused this. Chicken skin, ham, to many bully sticks, or a really fatty treat.... I would look into a different vet since I would only opt for surgery as a last resort. Pancreatitis can be controlled by diet!;)

thanks for all of the quick response! Max and I apprreciate it. Vet did surgery first to rule out any chance of max having a foriegn object stuck in his intestines even tho they did x-ays and an ultra sound showing nothing. vet said if it were her dog she would've sent him in........I do think surgery was unnesessary. im not sure what the exact levels of protiens were but they were at a point to where it would slow down max's healing process after surgey. after surgery the vet said my dog was an "enigma'' to her. Just what any pet lover wants to hear..so now they are treating it as gastreonitis/pancreantitis. Max was still very ill yesterday after surgery but today vet put a lil amount of baby food on her finger and max swallowed it. now we just have to pray he keeps it down. she said if he throws it up we r in trouble. I visited him yesterday and omg i was a basket case seeing him with that IV in his hand looking like a zombie. i hate to knowing we couldve avoided sugery at all cost and simply treated it as pancreatitis/gastreontitis. She knows this is my first pet amd i do hope she wouldnt take advantage. so please pray that my baby keeps his food down!!! so now i typed this will it reply to all who kindly replied to me?? ps. the biopsy report hasnt came in yet......thanks so much everyone. i am so lucky to have found this site

Pancreatitis - we had it once last year. Bailey had to stay overnight at the vets (on IV fluids). It was the longest night ever! I know the vets must have thought I was a crazy mom. I visited Bailey 4 times. They had her zombied up too. I brought her toys and a quilt so that she had some things that smelled like home.

The next afternoon, Bailey ate a very small amount and kept it down, then we brought her home. We were instructed to feed her small portions of low fat bland food. So, I made up a batch of chicken and rice (50/50). She did good for two days, then threw up again. I called the vet, and was told to wait and try again at the next feeding. She kept it down. She threw up one more time and that was the last time. I had given her a bully stick too soon (my bad :( )

After a week of chicken 'n rice - I alternated her regular food and the chicken 'n rice for another week. The 3rd week- we went back to her regular diet - then eventually added in bully sticks as a snack. Havent had another episode since.

Now my story is about an acute pancreatitis. We had one incident and recovered. Some yorkies (and you will know in time) have chronic pancreatitis which requires constant supervision of their diet.

I am so sorry for what you and your poor baby are going through! I will say a prayer for a full recovery and healing. Hugs to you.

There is a time to do exploratory when no foreign body is seen on diagnostic imaging. I highly doubt that time is before a negative Spec cPL. He is probably only 1% better because major abdominal surgery has just compounde the problem. If he can't hold food down stiill, please get a second opinion before this vet tells you there is no hope.

How was the pancreatitis diagnosed? Blood work?

Max says thank-u everybody as your prayers have worked. Maxie is home.....I couldnt be happier. Altho he is not 100% yet, he will soon be with sum tlc and drugs.
