OMG I think Poppy's tail is broke?? Poppy has her long tail it has never been docked, Her tail was fine yesterday and when I put her to bed. She sleeps in her pen with her bed, pads ect. Anyway I woke up this morning (I was the first person to see her) and her tail is bent on the end  I felt it and it wasnt just fur it was her actual tail bent. It mustn't hurt because she had no problem with me touching it but Im just wondering how the hell it happend  Is this dangerous and is there anything that can be done? She bites her tail sometimes but I dont think she is strong enough to actually snap her own tail (shes 9 weeks old). She has an appointment at the vet on the 30th for her next needle and I was going to ask him about it then, but is there any help you can offer? |
The vet can try to set the tail but there's no guarantee that it will heal back perfectly. Just to be safe, I'd go ahead and take her in to be looked at. You wouldn't want to risk a possible infection or her causing further harm to it without knowing what's going on. |
So do you think I should book an earlier appointment instead of waiting for her app next week yeh? Im just so worried about her, I have no idea how it happend :( |
I think a vet visit is definitely needed today. I've never owned a dog who broke their tail but my neighbors lab puppy broke his years ago. The vet (I believe) set the tail and it took quite a while for it to heal. Poor baby I hope she is not in pain and the vet is able to set it if it is broken. |
Thank you I will ring and make a vets appointment today. I really hope she isnt in pain, she is letting me touch it without pulling away or yelping so hopefully thats a good sign. I just dont understand how she has done it :( |

I will, Thanks again :) |
Quick update -- I have been trying to ring the vet but they are closed and re-open at 5pm :( So I will ring then but it looks unlikley that they will be able to see her today so hopefully they can see her tomorrow morning. Will let you know more when I speak to them at 5pm. |
Poor little baby, I hope she has no pain. If worse comes to worse maybe when she is spayed they can dock it just a little, to take off the broken end. |

EDIT: It is 16:26pm at the moment for those in a different time zone to me, its only half an hour but Im so worried it feels like days! |
I can't remember where I heard or read, but I've seen it some where, not sure what type of dog but it had an anxiety or obsessive complusive disorder where it would mutilate it's own tail. Could she be chewing on it while in her crate because shes anxious or bored?? Im no expert of course. Just a thought |
Aw i am sorry i hope she is ok. Let me know what the vets says, good luck xx |
Prayers for Poppy! Just lit her candle. :) |

I keep her in her pen when I am out with her bed, toys, pee pads and food + water bowls. She is never alone for longer then 2-3 hours at a time, I really hope she isnt mutilating her tail because of anxiety or OCD but I wont rule it out. I am trying to get her a vet appointment ASAP thanks for the help and I will update as soon as I have spoken to the vet (they re-open in 15minutes). |

QUICK UPDATE ------- Spoken to the vets and they said it is open surgery tomorrow from 9am - 11am so we have to bring her in then and we dont need an appointment. I explained the situation and they said that they will check her over, if she needs surgery they will book her in ASAP and will give her some pain relief for over the weekend if she needs it. She dosnt seem to be in any pain as she is acting her normal self, playing and wagging her tail alot and she dosnt mind me touching it but we will see what the vet says tomorrow. This is not the vet I usually see as they are not open tomorrow but It is from the same branch of vets and I have heard lots of good things about them so hopefully all is well. I will be outside waiting for them to open at 9am! Thanks again to everyone who replied, I will update tomorrow. |

Thinking of pretty Poppy! Did vet say what they think need do? |
No it wasnt the vet I spoke to on the phone I think it was just the receptionist, She just said to bring her in first thing in the morning and they will check her over. She said they will give her pain meds for any pain/discomfort and see if she needs surgery. To be honest she didnt let me get a word in edge ways so I didnt get a chance to tell her how old she was or what kind of dog she was or anything. But I supose the vet will take good care of her tomorrow. |
Its her 9 week birthday today too bless her :( |
:( Poor darling. I lit another candle...House it lit up with Poppy prayer! Cuddling Mango and Berry (my bunnies) they say 'get better soon Poppy!!" |
Thats so sweet thank you :) xx |
UPDATE! I took Poppy to the vets this morning and the vet says her tail is deffo dislocated or fractured, but because its on the very end it should be okay. She said when this happens they usually loose feeling in the bit after the fracture. If it had of been closer to her butt it could be dangerous because she would loose feeling in most of her tail and then try and bite her tail off as she wouldnt recognise it as part of her body, but because its right at the very end she said that Poppy shouldnt even notice it. She said it wasnt worth using a splint to straighten it because it would cause her more stress and it isnt causing her any discomfort at the moment so its best to just leave it to heal. It will obviously heal with a slight bend in the end but I dont care aslong as she is okay and not in any pain :) Would LOVE to know how she managed to do it though hmmm...... Thanks to everyone who replied Poppy feels much loved :) |
I had a cat once that had the end of her tail caught in a closing door. The end was bent but didn't bother her. |
Thats good, It dosnt seem to bother Poppy either and the vet says its okay just to leave it and it will be fine :) |
I'm glad to hear that she is OK. She is adorable. Daisy and Teddy send her kisses. |
That's good news! :) Thanks for the update. |
Thanks everyone Poppy feels very loved :) and she sends lots of puppy kisses your way! |
