No money for vet Let me first say that I've been unemployed for several months and stopped receiving unemployment checks last month. I'm in dire straits financially and would forgo food if I had money to take my baby to the vet. I just don't have it. I'm very worried about my 4.5 lbs 5 yr old yorkie "Lefty". He started throwing up Saturday around noon and threw up all day long. He became weak and lethargic but hasn't eaten since. I've been able to get him to take decent drinks of cold water every couple of hours for the last 36 hours and he stopped throwing up but he still won't eat anything. He shivers like he is cold at times and will get up to follow me at times but he stops to lie down, as if he just feels too weak to go on. Only things I can think of that he might have eaten would be some little mushrooms that popped up in our lawn overnight. Any suggestions? How long can he go on just drinking water? |
These things are always so hard. He has to see a vet. That said, dogs can definitely go a few days without eating. With some those, their sugar drops. So there is no way to know how much danger he is in right now. I'd say give karo syrup, but if this was pancreatitis, I'm not so sure that would be a good idea. So he could've gotten mushrooms? Was vomiting the only symptom? I'm a bit worried about something toxic. What have you tried feeding? |
Call around and see if there are some vets that will work out a payment plan with you. |

Great suggestions by the other posters. You might try to give him cooked chicken and brown rice (bland) to jump start his eating system again...........But the bottom line is if he doesn't soon eat, "you need to get the dog to the vet." |
Thanks so much for the suggestions everyone. So far I have offered him boiled chicken, cottage cheese, milk, Beneful soft dog food & chicken broth. He took 3 licks of the milk and that’s it. He’ll drink fresh water right now but that’s it. I was encouraged to see him get up, go out back and pee on his own. He also defecated (liquid stool) but his poor little legs were wobbling as he squatted. Neighbors gave me some Karo syrup, Enfamil baby formula, Pedialyte and a medicine dropper (they have babies) and told me they think I should make him drink some Enfamil and Pedialyte regularly. Any reason I shouldn’t force him to drink a dropper of formula and pedialyte? Think he’ll still need the Karo syrup if I can get the formula and pedialyte in him? |
You are asking those of us on a forum who are not vets, to give you advice that only a vet should give. I'm so sorry. I don't mean to be insensitive at all and I have been in similar situations in my life so I can definitely understand what a hard time you're having but you really need to get some professional advice from a vet. Maybe try calling around and see if someone would be willing to see you and work out some type of payment plan for when you're back to work? Or if nothing else, you can sign your baby over to a rescue and then they will get him the help he needs. I really feel for you....:( |
Pedialyte, has electrolites in it and it will help keep him hydrated. |
Sorry your baby is sick. Ne does need to be seen by a vet. If you can just get him in for a visit and some medicine it should run about 50-75 dollars. Maybe they will let you pay a little at a time. Keep us posted. |

milk is not good for dogs because they are lactose intolerant. some can\'t even handle cottage cheese, yogurt, or regular cheese. i don\'t know anything about giving baby formula to dogs. personally i wouldn\'t do it without having an experienced breeder and vet tell me its ok. the pedialyte is ok to give and bland chicken and rice is ok. dog food is fine and the chicken broth is fine too just make sure its low sodium or dilute it with his regular water bowl. Honestly you could be doing more harm then good by trying to treat him at home because you don\'t know what exactly is wrong with him. If he got into something toxic he could get liver or kidney damage and the longer he goes untreated the worse it can get. Can you at least call your vet and speak with him on the phone about what\'s going on? tell him your situation and maybe he will work something out with you. Lefty really should be see by a vet to figure out what\'s going on. With him being 4.5lbs and not eating he can lose weight fast and bring on more problems. |
pet smart vets cost 35 dolars! i think that it is one of the cheepest you can find.. good luck! I hope that everything worls better for you |
Im very sorry to hear his is so sick, I see you mentioned mushrooms, we just had a flyer around our neighborhood about the dangers of these and how you must get rid of every single one, if indeed he did digest these, he must be seen asap even a little can be fatal :( will be praying for him ~ |
Maybe you can contact a low cost spay and neuter clinic to see if they know of any vets that will be willing to work with you. |
Do you have any friends or family members that can help you out? Maybe call the shelter and ask them what Vet. you could take him to that will let you make payments. There has to be someone somewhere that can help you out with this. Your little baby needs a Vet. asap. I do hope you find the help he needs. |
