My little one is dying Hello Yorkie talkers~~ I am so devastated that my 13 yo yorkie is passing away. She has had a long life, I know, but it doesn't make this any easier just the same. I took her to the vet day before yesterday with unknown to me at the time were symptoms of kidney failure. She had been throwing up, lethargic for days, drinking plenty of water but not really peeing as much, etc. They did blood work and found out that her BUN was 167 and her creatinine was 5.4 All of this was a complete and utter shock to me since she has been fine up to then as far as these symptoms go. I had been noticing some weight less but not much ( 2lbs) and her muscle was fading. All that I attributed to old age. (ditto by her vet!) Only by READING articles on the web am I realizing how serious these numbers are for her since her vet really didn't tell me what to expect or what to do!!!!!! She did say that she needs the IV treatment which is where my baby is right now. I'm not sure how much this will help but at this point, any help I can give her is a comfort to me. I really don't know what to do or what to think. I'm not getting answers except that she is listed in the 'severe' category from the sites I've been on. No clue how long she has or how to handle it from here. Does anyone know???????????? I know her diet needs to change along with her water. But does anyone know what these numbers mean for her and can they be reversed or lowered from here where I can keep her around for a while longer, and if so, what do I need to do to accomplish that.....what would it mean for her? I don't want her to be in pain just so I can keep her around. I know I have to face the loss of her at some point. It's just that this has been such a shock that I wasn't expecting or prepared for. I'm just so completely devastated right now. Anyone that can help it would sure be a blessing to me right now. Anything you can tell me, good or bad will help. |
Hi Jamie, I would take her a leave her with your vet until he can stabilize her. She sounds like she needs to be on IV fluids. Not sure whats going on. What did the vet say? Did he give her any meds? |

I don't know, I'm just panicking because I feel helpless with all of this. I'm helpless and confused! |
Sending prayers to your baby girl. I really hope she can pull through this. Sending hugs to you too! |
Hi Jamie, I don't have any medical knowledge to help you, but I wanted you to know I'll be saying some prayers for your little one, and for you. I hope they can improve her health to spend some more time with you. Over the years I have had to say goodbye to many little friends, and it is never easy when the time comes. I know you love her very much, and I hope things get better. |
Thank you all for your prayers!!!!!! That helps too! :) |
Jamie, I know more people will come on tomorrow and have better answers for you. Please check this thread in the morning. My prayers are with you and your baby. She is in good hands. |
I agree with many more people on tomorrow and able to help you. I am so sorry you are going through this, I know it is extremely hard and painful. If it were me, I would talk to the vet tomorrow and insist on some answers or have things better explained to you. They are working for YOU! Hugs and prayers. |
Hello Jamie.....I'm so sorry your little one has been diagnosed with this terrible condition. I have also been given this news recently....This site has a lot of helpful info, it might be very useful and help explain some things the vet can't...... DogAware.com Health: Kidney Disease in Dogs The vet probably can't give a time frame because this disease effects each pet differently. Some have kidneys that hang in there longer than others. There really is no drugs for *kidney failure* but there are supplements and drugs for the complications that come with this disease. I hope the IV flush brings her numbers down......Good luck and I wish you both well..... |
:getwell: I have no medical knowledge or advise, but I can offer up prayers for your little Jamie. I know we will all face things medically as our babies age, and it must be so hard for you. I will pray for you too, I know this must be so difficult for you. I pray that the IV works to bring the numbers down on her BUN and creatinine and that with diet she will have a lot more quality time with you. Sending hugs and prayers to you and Jamie this morning.:ghug::hands: |
I have no experience with this either but want to express my sympathies. I'm so sorry...:( |
IM sorry |
I am so sorry. I just lost my beloved Cody this past year due to renal failure. He had it for many years, so it is possible for them to hang in for a while. It would be hard for anyone to predict what might happen at this point. What your vet is doing is exactly what needs to be done. Fluids need to be given intravenously in order to flush the system. It is similar to doing dialysis. The rest is really up to God. I will pray for your baby .. that she will respond to the fluids. Many times they DO respond! And, yes, if she does bounce back, her diet will be very important. Take one step at a time. Right now, it is very important for the vet to try to stabilize her. I wish I had more to offer. Losing our pups is not something we are ever prepared for. I hope that perhaps you will have some more quality time with yours. |
you have my prayers too. Life can throw you curves and sometimes it's very hard to revover from....I wish you all the best and know you'll do right by her. |
I'm so sorry. I will keep your little one in my prayers. |
I am so sorry and will keep you in my prayers. |
Thank you all. It's so kind that you all are responding to this and sending prayers. This is very, very hard to deal with right now. I am crying more than I'm doing anything else. It's just that this was soooooo unexpected! She's been to the vet numerous times recently and it just makes me mad that this wasn't found, or realized by them!!!! Of course she had some symptoms early on that should have been realized. Now, she is the last stages of it and I feel I have no time left with her. It's very upsetting to me. I'm going to call the vet pretty soon and see how she is doing. I will keep everyone posted. Thank you all again! :) |
Jamie I will keep her and you in my prayers |
I'm sending prayers also. |

They symptoms don't generally manifest until it gets to the serious stage of the disease.... Try and stay focused on what is in your control now, trying to get her stabilized and getting her the care she needs to feel better....You will be needing all of your courage, strength and love to to help her now..... |
It is so very sad to go through this, and I'm hoping your little one will be a lot better soon. I do know that vitamin B injections help with kidney failure, talk to your vet and see what he says. My cat had kidney failure, and her vit B shots made her feel and act so much better. I believe they work for dogs as well. Sending prayers for your little girl. |
I called the vet a little while ago. While the vet didn't talk to me, one of the techs did. She said she is still getting IV fluids but still not eating much. She told me to come up at around 12:45 and the vet would talk to me then. Doesn't sound very promising at all. I'm not sure if her numbers have gone down but I'm going to assume that if they had, she would be feeling well enough to eat. The sad thing is that she changed over-night with all of this. Went from being fine one day, to horribly sick the next!!! No in-between! At least I didn't notice her going downhill. I'll let you all know when I know something. Thank you all for being there for me thru this difficult time.... |
I am praying for you and your little one. Please let us know what you hear from the vet. Hugs ~ Jean |
Praying that the vet has some good news for you and that your baby can recover from this.... |
We are all here for you Jamie |
Praying for your little one and that you get some good news from the Vet. |
Praying you get good news at the vets. I had a 6 month old puppy with congenital kidney failure. I took her to a nephrologist when one of the vets said there was nothing to be done. The specialist said he had many long term patients and quite a few yorkies in his practice that were doing well with treatment. Dixie was given Iv fluids and several medicines but sadly her kidney's just had never matured and I lost her. The specialist did say that in most cases, if they have at least 25% kidney function they can be helped. Dixie had only 17%. Dixie's Bun was over 400. I hope that you baby will improve and have many more good times with you. |
I went through this with my golden retriever 15 yrs ago and it is fresh in my mind how painful it is to watch your precious pet go through this. The most important thing is to schedule visits with her while she is in the hospital so that she doesn't get depressed. It also will do you good as well to see her little face. I will be praying for you both and I am so sorry about what you are going through! |
I am so very sorry that you are going thru this with your little one. I'm sending prayers that things will turn around and allow you some more good quality time with her. We all feel your pain, and are here for you. Hugs... |
Sending hugs and prayers, this is devastating... |
