The Latest Carlo update as of 5/20/10 Well, we met with the Oncologist this morning. We discussed the MAST CELL TUMOR/SYSTEMIC MASTOCYCTOSIS, and he as a real bad case with the large mass in the intestine. He is sure it spread through other parts, and we started an agressive Chemo Therapy to see if we can help him. Without it, he said he as 2-3 more months. With it, a 50-50 chance he can have good quality for over a year. He received his first treatment today. Protocol calls for VINBLASTINE, along with Benedryl and Prednisone (Steroid). He gets one IV a week for 4 weeks, and then one every two weeks for the next 8 weeks, so he will get a total of 8 treatments. They will do a blood test prior to each treatment, and other tests as called for. He is in great shape for his age, and strong. We just got home a little while ago, and already he wants to go for a walk. The Vet did say Carlo does not like being restrained. I asked how the Vet would like it....no reply. |
I don't know what to say, Steve. I was praying for better news for Carlo. I hope this treatment gives you lots of quality time with the big guy. {hugs} |
Praying for smooth sailing here on out... |
I am so sorry that you didn't get a better prognosis Steve. I will keep you and Marge in my thoughts and I hope Carlo gets another good quality year with his family. He is a fighter and miracles can happen,Just look at Roriee. I hope one happens for you all. |
I am praying Carlo has a great outcome with the chemo. |
You are a great dad to Carlo and are doing all that you could possibly do for him. Thank you for keeping us all posted on what is going on with his treatment. Hang in there big guy~Carlo you are such a fighter--now have dad take you for a walk ;) |
Well, we just got back from a 1 mile walk, and he wanted to go the regular 3 miler route, but no sense is over doing it. The bet did way it was ok....He is now resting on his bed, and chewing a Nylabone. Also, said the Prenisone will make him drink more, and urinate more. Trust me, you do not want him to have an accident in the house. I would have to call FEMA and homeland security for flooding! Thank you for the well wishes. |
I know Carlo is one tough cookie, and I'll bet the chemo is a breeze for him. He's got a wonderful family and lots of people cheering for him. I know the doctors mean well setting expectations, but I had a similar prognosis for a bullmastiff, and he had two wonderful years with us after his diagnosis with chemo treatments. I'm so glad to see he was pushing for the 3 mile walk (he must be feeling pretty good!), but I'm glad you held him off. It's not so easy to carry the big babies back home if they tire. ;) ETA: You made me laugh with the FEMA comment. My boy was 135 lbs, and the pred did increase his appetite and thirst. There was one time while on the pred he peed in his sleep while on our bed. He was obviously upset about it (and of course we didn't scold him), and the duvet went straight in the trash - it couldn't recover from something like that! |
I'm sorry the news wasn't better, I will continue to keep him in my prayers! |
I hate to hear this:( You are such a wonderful person in taking care of the big fella;) I hope nothing but the best. |
AW...give big guy lots & lots of hugs & kissies from me & Zhoie. Always in our prayers for many many more happy/healthy days. |
Sending prayers for Carlo that he will do well on chemo. He's so lucky to have such a loving family. Of course, I'm sure he repays that love tenfold. Whatever will be, will be... |
Awww, so sorry...:( I hope that he has a good quality of life for every moment he has left - and hope it's a long time too! |
Praying for you guys ole man!! Love getting your emails! Keep em coming!! Keep me posted!! :-) |

We do too. We just got back from a mile long walk before the rains come. He seems to be tolerating the Chemo on day 2 real well, just urinating a lot from the prednisone. Other than that, he seems real good. We will see what the next few days bring. He goes in for another treatment next Thursday. Have a great weekend. |
Thinking of your family and sending prayers for Carlo. |
Sending good thoughts for Carlo. Hang tough Big Guy! Steve, should I send you a bilge pump - just in case of flooding? :D:D |
Sending good thoughts and prayers for Carlo and your family. I wish there was something I could say to make it better, but there are no words.... this is just plain sad and it sucks. Hugs to you all:big_hug: |
Carlo was a little bit down today, but still wanted to go for his walk. They did say he may not be feeling his best on days 2-5. He ate a good breakfast, taking his meds, and drinking a lot of water. We did go for a walk, and he was fine. I am not going to push him tomorrow as it is supposed to get into the high 80's. May just sit outside with him, and let him watch animal planet reruns. Over all, he is doing great. Even Maxine is being nice to him. She has not attacked him since his surgery. She must know! |

I love it....he watches tv!! I had a pup who did that...I used to put movies on for her when I went out. Benji was a favorite! :) Maxine is being a good sister! :) I swear they do know when others do not feel well. When I have a sick one, the others seem to go out of their way to sniff them and check on them. Continued prayers for Carlo...hope it was just a one day thing. |
I think Carlo needs to watch Animal Planet too. :D I'm glad that Maxine is behaving herself and treating Carlo sweet. Maybe they can lay together and both watch a little AP :) |
Hope Carlo has a better day tomorrow. That's so sweet his little sister is cutting him some slack. |
Checking in to see how Carlo is doing! |
The big guy is doing real well. Eating, playing, acting like his old self the past few days. All you have to do is make sure he goes out every hour with all the water the Prednisone causes him to drink. He tolerated the VinBlastin real well. He goes in tomorrow morning for another Blood Test, and then the Chemo shot. At his age, I know we are on borrowed time, but I hope to have him around for at least another year, or longer. |
I am so happy to hear he is doing well and tolerating the chemo! :) I know you will enjoy whatever time you have with your buddy. He is so fortunate to have such a loving family. :) |
I will keep him in my prayers :) |

We just got home from his 2nd Chemo treatment and blood work! The blood looks real good, He lost 2 pounds since last week, most likely due to the heavy dose of Prednisone as it causes one to lose muscle. The Vet cut the does from 4 Prednisone a day, to 2 a day. He is still drinking gallons of water. Still is active, and doing well. In a few weeks, they will do another Ulreasound to make sure no new growrh. We go back again next Thursday for another round. |

Keeping Big C in my thoughts during this difficult time. Just relax, watch AP, maybe some other movies like Hotel for dogs, 8 Below or Balto! It is good that the two of you have each other and the other 2 ladies in your life, enjoy your time and keep us informed. Big love from my family in TX:animal-pa |
