Very Sick Puppy
 

As I was doing research on my new puppy, I found this site. I would really like to know what to do or get any helpful advice. I've had my little girl for about 4 weeks. I purchased her at 10 weeks old, apprx 8 ounces. We found out after two weeks that she had giardia (high count) and coccidia because my 16 month-old, 3.2 lb yorkie got very sick. She got it from the baby. Well, that's not all. A couple of days ago we found out she has ringworm also. She has it all over her little body and glowed in the vet's office under the [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]blue [COLOR=green !important]light[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR]. She has had both prior to getting her, but came with a clean bill of health. She has given my husband and myself ringworm and now my 12 year old pek is sick from giardia also. The poor baby yorkie has to be quarantined for at least two months and could possible be a carrier to both. She has grown to 1.7 lbs at 3.5 months and we love her to death and don't want to give her back, but are afraid this will continue and she could possible be a carrier. Should we give her back because she could possibly infect people and pets again? Somebody please give us some helpful advice.

Ringworm and giardia are both treatable - so what exactly do you mean by "carrier"? If this were me, I would not return her to the breeder bc it sounds like she came from a poor breeder, given her condition and I'd be very worried about returning her to her former environment. If you're not comfortable w/ her condition, perhaps you could turn her over to rescue? She is extremely small. Has she had full bloodwork done?

Also, where did her "health certificate/clean bill of health" come from?

This breeder sold you an 8 ounce puppy at ten weeks old? And you said in your other thread this is a YTCA member?

You're in a tough situation. Both ringworm and giardia can be very difficult to get rid of. Since you have other dogs, they can just kept reinfecting one another.

I'd get complete bloodwork done as Wylie's Mom suggested, including a bile acids test since she is nearly 15 weeks old. She is still really tiny.

My kids got me my tiny yorkie for a birthday present, paid $1200 for him, he's worth every dime. Anyway he came with giradia & coccidia (sp), both very treatable, but before he got treated he infected my 5 yr old yorkie, my 3yr old tiny toy poodle, our chihuahua, min pin and one small cocker spaniel. Twice over we treated the whole bunch! But we got rid of it, I was furious at the breeder but would not have taken him back for anything, and other than spending lots of money on treating, and cleaning like crazy, we are all ok. Did your vet tell you to totally clean the yard and house constantly? Anywhere that they might have an accident in the house needs to be totally sterilized, and the yard needs to be picked up many times a day and washed down. We got rid of it with our bunch, you can do it!

All 3 diseases are very cureable.....not to fret. I know this is a lot of work for you as you constantly have to keep up with sanitation purposes.

She's gaining weight a good sign. Don't give her back, she's going to be fine. I know a pain in the you know what, but it will all be worth it in the end. The one thing that she will always carry in her system is Coccidia, but as she is treated and grows older will never exhibit symptoms again

My oldest came with giardia... at the time I was staying with my parents who have 2 dogs and 2 cats and I had my cat there... the vet suggested we treat all the animals in the house at the same time to make sure they didnt keep passing it around... we did the treatment once and everyone was fine.

This is obviously not ideal, but it is also not the end of the world... Giardia can be treated and your pup can go on to lead a healthy life... is it possible for you to separate your two dogs completely for the time being? Also make sure everything they come in contact with bedding, bowls, toys, etc. is washed very well with hot water.

I adopted a kitten from the shelter last October, took him to my vet so they could keep him a few days and make sure he was healthy enough to bring home. He was, with the exception of ringworm, which showed up a few weeks later on me! I was the first to get it, then my other dogs and the other cats. Out of desperation, we did sulpher-lime dips, which I wouldn't recommend, to get rid of it. The whole thing was a terrible pain in the you know what. On top of that, the vet said Dewey might be a carrier. He didn't have the same obvious lesions from the ringworm, but did have these little spots on his nose that looked like he scraped it on a crate or something. Long story short, ringworm was gone before Christmas and I chalk it up as one of those character building experiences. Dewey was too adorable to give up and the shelter was a kill shelter. You will need to really keep an eye on your other dog and yourselves for ringworm.

Giardia and coccidia are also treatable. I would keep the puppy, but I would let the breeder know about this and ask for reimbursement of some of the cost of the vet bills. In the long run, this will pass and you'll have a great little dog.

I do think you should report the breeder to the YTCA, if that person is a member. Your puppy can not be the only one with the diseases. If she came from a pet store, I would call the Dept of Health. Especially since the puppy is carrying disease that is contagious to people. If she came from a BYB, you might call animal control too see if they can check up on the breeder.

Thank you to everyone for a little hope. It really helps. I did not know that Tia (baby yorkie) was sick when I purchased her. I got her to keep Ally (my other yorkie) company when my pek passed away. My pek is at the end of her life cycle and I didn't want Ally to be alone. That is why I purchased a small one (Ally is only 3.2 lbs). Tia is separated in a 3x3 puppy pen in my family room. She does have a small amount of contact with Ally when we go outside to exercise, but I separate them. They love each other and Ally will bring Tia toys to the side of the pen so they can play. It's so sad. I take Tia out and love her, take her out potty, and outside for exercise. She lays in my lap for at least an hour before bedtime (Ally beside me also). My hands/arms hurt from washing so much. Yes, I keep lotion on them and put lotrimin on any sore, but I wash so often...non of that is helping. I have gloves, but she touches other parts of me when I pick her up and I have to pick her up to take her outside so she doesn't touch anything/anyone else in the house. I clean the yard up after every poop, even in the dark with a flashlight. I pour bleach-water on it afterwards. This doesn't seem to help though because my pek got giardia so late in the game. She is usually separated from the other two because of her age/health. I'm not sure if my other two dogs have ringworm yet. I will find out in a week. I can't imagine that Ally doesn't have it because they played all the time together. Every morning and night meds for everyone are given to include putting ringworm lotion on any places that could have been affected. Poor little Ally gets her Lotrimin too, even though we don't know. I put it on areas that Tia could have infected like her ears, neck, and tail area. As for Tia being a carrier, I was told by the vet (who talked to a dog dermatologist at the University of Florida) that she could be a carrier, but couldn't help me answer any questions I had about it. I'm waiting to HOPEFULLY hear from a dermatologist today to help out. We do care for an elderly neighbor, who is all alone, and has cancer. I take care of her 8 lb yorkie when she goes for treatment or is hospitalized. I don't know what to do now. My neighbor has a low immune system and it very bad to come in contact with ringworm. I'm spending a fortune on vet visits, speciality pharmacy for Tia, Lotrimin, and bleach. Everything should be sterile, but I'm guessing it's not. I started washing and sterilizing beds, blankets, toys, dishes, etc. yesterday morning at 8:30 am and didn't finish until 10:30 am. Once I finished with Tia, who was last, she got the runs in a sterile pen and I had to start all over with everything she touched!!! We love her to death. I will keep everyone posted.

I am sorry that you and your family are going through this. My fellow YTers have given you some brilliant advice.

Some of us have SMOKIN Vets....have you thought of changing, like I said, I had FIVE dogs, got through all of the above without a problem. When you hold Tia make sure you use a baby blanket around her so she isn't touching your clothing. I'd change vets. I've got huge vet bills myself right now but somehow it always works out. My baby is Kia, she was a rescue with Cushings.

Just an update. I have quoted the Florida Lemon Law and am asking for a full refund to cover the cost of her vet bills, without returning the puppy. They are fighting back, of course.

That's a picture of my little Sterling in my avatar....the lady I got him from did offer to pay for the medicine for all my guys but by the time I found out what was wrong with all of them I just didn't want anything more to do with that whole mess. I wish you luck and do believe you are on the right track, I know it can get expensive, all the best!

Good for you! They may not like it, but if they sold the puppy in Florida, they are bound by its laws. Florida has some of the toughest puppy lemon laws in the country. :thumbup::thumbup:

If they refuse to reimburse you, report them to the Attorney General's Office (Consumer Protection).

I would also report them to the YTCA for selling you a sick puppy under 12 weeks old.

I can't imagine a 10 week old pup at only 8 oz! That's what mine weigh at 1 week and they will be about 3.5 - 4 lbs as an adult (according to the chart as they are currently growing). This little baby needs lots of care. The worms and parasites are treatable, and there is good advice in these posts. Keep on it, tho' as it is not a good thing to transfer to humans. Looks like you'll have your hands full for awhile...good luck.

Good for you! Fight them for a refund to pay her Vet bills.

Please do not give her back, these breeders sound beyond awful, and I can only imagine her living conditions there, these types of breeders are just in it for the $ and I seriously doubt they would take care of her if you gave her back, they would probably put her to sleep :(

The 3 things she has is totally treatable, I know you are doing your best and are tired, but soon everything could be great!

About your neighbor, maybe until things clear up, you can find someone to help her with her Yorkie :confused:

Just another update. Ally and my neighbor's dog have ringworm! More meds for everyone$$$$$ Nothing new from the breeder.

Oh, no!!!! I would advise sending the breeder a written letter with a copy of the Florida statute and copies of the vet bills attached. Give her a deadline of 10 days to respond and tell her if she doesn't, you will be filing a complaint with the Attorney General's Office.

Hurray for you! The breeder should have two reimburse you. I feel for you having two more dogs with ringworm. It is such a pain! I hope you can knock it out quickly.

If its any consolation, I read in one report for shelter medicine that ringworm usually plays itself out after a couple months. I'll see if I can find the article.

I didnt see your post, I just posted a lil bit ago, about Giardia, my lil Bella has it STILL. second round...grrrrrrr!!! The bleaching starts again in the morning...uggggh!

Okay, now that I know I have more than one dog with ringworm and giardia, does anyone know if I should keep my baby quarantined? Any helpful advice would be appreciated. I am at the end of my rope. I need sleep and my life back!!! It is HOT here in Florida and I'm wearing jeans, a long sleeve sweater, and playtex gloves to keep me from getting more of the ringworm. My hands and arms are so raw that I now have to do this to keep safe. I can't bear not touching the puppies though! I am cleaning/sterilizing again today. I'm trying to do this at least every other day. I did research and found out that Apple Cider Vinegar should help with the ringworm. My neighbor and I will start trying it today.

If I were you, I would separate all the dogs until the conditions clear up... otherwise it just may be a never-ending cycle.

I am so sorry your puppy is so sick, keep it up, i have gone through H and back with bella and its worth every penny. Its def a lot of work but it will pass eventually!

i took my little guy Travis to the vet 2 days after i recieved him from a breeder in wyoming, I live in philadelphia,
he was flown in. the vet said he was perfectly healthy and 1week later he has diareah with blood in it. I took him to another vet and they ran test and said he does have an intestinal parasite, should this other vet have been able to catch it and what about the vet that saw him before he was flown over? I did take a fecal sample to the vet that saw him right after i recieved him. He is 3 1/2 months old and weights 1lb. 13oz. he is still eating and doesn't go constantly only in the morning and at night but when he does there is always blood. I am still waiting for the vet to call and find out what kind of parasite it is.:animal-pa
