has anyone had a dog with leg perthes my baby got diagnosed with leg perthes disease. they did the fho surgery last aug. he currently is still not using his leg. we have done radio graphs and showed it has not completely in the joint.or something like that. our vet has us doing phyisal thearpy. has anyone else gone though this or something like this after fho surgery...any suggestions could help |
Lots of Yorkies have had this surgery on YT. I am not sure why they haven't said much..it could be because YT was having problems today...but you might use the search key to see the different threads that are out there... |

My first yorkie Oscar (who passed away over a year ago) had his leg operated on only a couple months after we got him - maybe he was 16 months old. He was fine within a couple days, the only thing I would have done differently was to pin up the good leg for a while to force him to build back the muscle in the bad leg. He could use them both great, but when he would run fast the bad leg would fly out to the side. It is a very common disease in yorkies, my breeder even paid for the surgery because it was within the contract. Good luck! |
One of the foster pups from YHR had the surgery too. I think there is even a video that was made of his recovery and PT after surgery. Let me see if I can find LJ she would have the link and info. :) |

No, the videos were of Teddy...but his surgery was different. Ozzy had bilateral FHOs and recovered very well. Some of them do require physical therapy after. Hopefully, yours will do well with the therapy you are doing. Is there a place close to you that does physical therapy on dogs? That would help his recovery much faster! |
yeah i know. I am just wondering the post surgery. bc mine still hold his up and he has seen the vet and has us doing water thearpy and range of motion exercise but dont seem to help. My vet said if this does not help he is going to cast the leg(i am guessing this will force him to use his leg). we got him from a store...we are glad we have him but wish we did not buy from store. we just did not know. we have since only adpoted our other dog..will never buy.. but the store did pay for the surgery...and i contacted the breeder and he did not care.;(... i am just wanting to know if anyone has had problems post surgery and what helped.... |
We live next to a&m texas university and he does water thearpy at the vet school... he goes twice a week as that is all i can afford...its expensive even for a school. and the other days he goes swimming at out dog park,,,which has a man made swimming pond for the pups |

He had different surgery, but that was all he needed and the therapist gave me exercises for home, just like you are getting. It was his leg...just not the same surgery exactly...but he needed to learn to use the leg). Other than swimming, have they given you other things to do? I had Teddy walking on an air mattress...it helped with muscle development. Not easy for them to limp on an air mattress...forces them to use the leg. I do hope he starts using it. It sounds like the muscles did not heal around it the way they should have?? Just a guess. |

He has visibal muscle atophy. the ex rays showed that it has not healed into the place and is too high up..something like that and the femur needs to be strected down.. he does not seem to be in pain.. he is happy .. but loosing all his muscle could be very bad for the future health.... have you ever heard of putting a cast on his leg to force him to use it...our vet want us to try thearpy for 3 months and then think about casting him...let me know thanks so much for your help |
