amputation hi ,,, my poor little sonny boy went through a big operation this afternoon, he got his left hind leg completely removed. i had been worried sick no sleep last night , worrying how he was goin to be with the anesetic, i phoned at 5 today and they are keeping him in for a couple off days, i no he is in better hands at the minute, the vet said he still drowsy but tryin to move about, and all went well. thank god! was wonderin if there is any advice for after care, i have a cage etc, it was more on toilet issues x:animal-pa |
Your vet with advise you on after surgery care, like keeping him calm, and well rested. You may need stairs to get up / down off furniture, jumping down might be an ongoing trouble. On the up side, dogs adapt, AMAZINGLY well to such a thing! Toileting may require a little patience, and might involve more frequent bum washes for awhile. But life should get normal fairly quickly. Thoughts are with you. Good luck! |
I am so very sorry that your little one has to go thru this. I can hear how difficult of a decision this was for you to make in your post. :( I have heard/read of others making a sling out of a scarf and holding the pup up to potty after a surgery. I will keep our little one in my thoughts and prayers that he heals quickly. If you do not mind my asking, what brought you to this surgery? Hugs to you and your little one. Bo |
:) i am so sorry to hear what your baby is going through :( i cant offer any advice unfortunately but thank god everything seems ok , i hope ypu dont mind me asking what happened ? love and luck to you , love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
thanks so much for ur kind words,,, my partner bought him off a breeder in papers and when we got home he had no back foot we took him back and breeder never even knew, he said the mom must have chewed it off thinking it was the cord he tried to give us another one but i knew it wud be the end for the little one, so i begged the man to let me keep him and he did and give me my money back and said he wud have been drowned, so i took him to vets and they said to wait till he was young adult before amputation, as he wud be stronger he is now 1 yrs and what a beautiful boy he is, so full offf life.xx:animal-pa |
Here's a video someone posted before of a little one with his hind leg removed. You can see that he does really well. Best wishes for a great recovery for your little one. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...t-he-fast.html |
ps,, sonny kept hitting the bone of the ground , it wud bleed often, also a very sharp bone which ever way the mom had chewed, i always tried to bandage it but he was not having that, it was chewed right up passed where the due claw wud have been.:animal-pa |

How on earth could the breeder not have known he didn't have a foot? Thank God you rescued this poor baby from that horrible life:eek:You are my hero for refusing to part with this precious baby:thumbup: Good luck to you, keeping you both in my prayers |
Sorry to hear about your little guy but so glad you kept him. A dog ay the shelter I go to recently had his hind leg amputated. I saw him a couple of days after surgery and he was laying down, 2 weeks later he was standing on the couch in the room they were keeping him in and gets around very well. He is a bigger dog though. Keep us posted. |
Lots of well wishes for your precious baby:) |
Aww..poor little guy. I hope he has a speedy recovery and is back home with you soon. :) |
You will be amazed at how well he will do! I had a foster who had a hind leg amputated. I was able to bring him home on the third day after surgery. The first morning, when I got up to let everyone run outside I had expected to go and have to assist him....oh, no....he ran right out the door and did his business. There was no stopping him! :) |
sending prayers your way for a quick recovery. hopefully he adapts quickly and everything goes well. such a sad story but I'm so thankful he's in a home that loves him no matter what! You did a wonderful thing with keeping him. |
drowned Hi, i'm so sorry about your baby!!! how amazing you were to keep the little one as i can't imagine it being my minnie. we were wondering about the drowing part, if you decided to not keep your little one, isn't that illegal to do to an animal? we think you're such a wonderful person to love and cherish your little pup |
I hope your little one has a speedy recovery and adjusts well. Thank you for keeping him and not returning him to the breeder that didn't even know he was minus a foot! |
Poor sonny, I am sure you are going through a lot right now. I will pray that he recovers quickly. He has a wonderful Mom to love him through this!! He was meant to survive that is why you chose him, so he is going to be fine and adjusting fine. Dogs do adapt quickly. I remember when Daisy dislocated her elbow they taped it up in a splint and she was on 3 legs for 3 weeks and after the first week she was running up and down stairs. hugs to you both~Joyce |

My good friend adopted an Australian Shepherd that required a rear leg amputation. She has adapted well and runs with him every day. She did have to have an ACL repair last year, 6 yrs after the amputation. The remaining rear leg may eventually almost center itself for balance. The only thing the vet required of him was to keep her weight under control because too much weight is not good for the single leg to support. |
update on sonny thank you to all,,,, i just got sonny home from vets he is in his cage with door open, he came out for water and returned to it again, he is a bit down ,only to be expected!! but its a relief to have him home, sonny bought the vet a nice bottle of wine and the staff a box of chocolates, and a thank you card,, for all the great work they done, i will try to get photos in next couple off days for u all . such a wee soldier!!!! xxxx:D |

Metacam sonny seems very uncomfortable , he runs and hides, and looks so sad, its heart breaking, i give him his METACAM 4kg this mornin [syringe] its only once a day then his antibiotic noroclav 50mg twice a day, would it be wrong to give him a little more pain med at night as he usually gets it in mornings,??? |

you are an angel for all you have done for this little boy! |
Thank you for keeping the sweet little one and for taking care of him the way he should be taken care of for life. On the other hand, any breeder that didn't know a puppy was missing a foot within hours of it happening is a shyster, money grubbing, non-caring, scum bucket. He obviously didn't even look this pup over before handing him over to you! Now on the positive side. My girlfriend is a vet tech and one day a lady brought a lab puppy in to be euthanized because the mother had actually chewed the leg off thinking she was chewing the cord etc. They were having the vet put it down, but my friend asked if she could have the pup instead and the breeder said yes and even paid the bill to have the leg cleaned up and medicated. They kept him with mom let him wean and he has been the love of her life! |
