Allergic Reaction I took Missy to the groomers on Saturday. By Saturday night she had red blothces on her tummy, her neck, her private area looked irritated and her ears were red with little bumps on it. As soon as I noticed I took her to the emergency hospital. The vet said it was an allergic reaction, most likely to the shampoo they used at the groomers. They gave her an injection of benadryl and perscribed children's benadryl. I had to take her back the next day because she was still so itchy and miserable. She scratched her belly so much she made it bleed. :( :( :( And she keeps rubbing her ears on the carpet. They gave her a shot of anti-inflamitory and told me to keep giving her the benadryl. Her belly, neck and private area seem better, but not her ears. The vet said it was definetly not an ear infection, just the allergic reaction. Has this ever happened to you? Do you have any suggestions on what may help sooth her itching?? I called the groomer and they used Groomers Edge shampoo and The Stuff spray. I usually use Earthbath puppy shampoo and detangling spray and have not had any issues. Please help! I hate seeing Missy so miserable. She didn't even want to eat. :( |

Crosley is somewhat sensitive to shampoos so we tend to use a very gentle formula or an oatmeal shampoo, but we have never had that type of reaction. I wonder if you gave her an oatmeal bath if that would help calm the itching. I hope she's better soon! |
Thank you Reese1. It was her first time at this groomers as I usually groom her at home. She needed a trim and I don't know how to do that so I took her to a place that is really great. I feel so bad! If I hadn't taken her, she wouldn't be suffering. :( |
Don't blame yourself. If Missy never showed signs of allergic reactions to other things, how were you to know? Do you have a cone to keep her from irritating her boo boos? I would try a nice cool bath with the oatmeal shampoo, or another mild doggy shampoo. I hope Missy feels better! |
I do have a cone from when she got spayed! Great idea. Can I use neosporine on her where she drew blood? :( I'm afraid to give her a bath with shampoo! :( what if I make it worse???? |

I would use coconut oil over neosporine as neosporine has petroleum in it and not safe to lick and coconut oil works well for hot spots i use it all the time |

She was just supposed to get a trim, but they dd end up shaving her. :( I rinsed her with warm water but did not use shampoo as I did not want to irritate the reaction further. I will keep one of her tshirts on her to keep from itching her belly. Thank you for the suggestions!! I am going to go buy some coconut oil right now! If she's still like this tonight, I am taking the day of tomorrow an taking her back to the vet :( |

can you send some pics on here as I can tell you what i think as have dealt with allergic reactions etc before --usually if it is allergic reaction they get hives so why i think it is more of a burn - is the benedryl helping ? |
it ok to use coconut oil on broken skin. The benadryl helped but not with the inside of her ears were the worst of it is :( |
That poor lil girl. I hope she gets better soon. Nothing like that has ever happened to me. Hope the itches go away really fast. |

I had a Schnauzer when I was little that could never be shaved...only cut with scissors. He would always have an allergic reaction for the razor. I am not sure why as I was really young, but we only had his hair cut after that and he never had another reaction! :) |

Is Missy feeling any better yet? |
Sorry to hear that your baby is hurting. I would probably bath him in his regular shampoo to get anything off him, using cool water. Then put on a t shirt to keep him from hurting himself more. I hope he feels better soon. |

I need a "doggy first aid kit" what kinds of things do you keep in there? Quote:

I don't have all those things in the link. I basically have a peoples first aid kit, and then added to it, hydrogen peroxide, nutrical, diarsynal paste (for diahrea, works great), liquid (kids) benedryl. For the canned pumpkin, if you buy a can, get a melon baller or small spoon and make little balls and freeze them, so if you need to give pumpkin you don't have to waste the rest of the can. |
Update I just want to thank everyone for their great advice! I am now armed with Nutiva, Calendula ointment and children's benadryl. Missy's doing a lot better. Scrathcing and rubbing her ears on the carpet is way down. She still does it but not very often Don't know if this is just normal scratching or still because of the irritation. I'm still nervous because she's almost back to her normal self but not quite. She's eating, but not as much as usual. She's still as energetic as ever though!! :) I've been using the coconut oil on her belly and the belly scratching is almost gone! Where she drew blood is drying up. Her ears are not pink at all until she scratches or rubs them! :( And then they stay pink for soooo long. I will try the Celendula on her ears today and see if that helps. Again, thank you all for your help! I seriously don't know what I would do without you all and YT. Sometimes you just need more than what your Vet tells you, ya know? |

what happens is they itch which releases the histamines so the more they itch the worse it gets like when you scratch a mosquito bite the more you itch the more itchy it gets same effect so i have to hold dd walk her in my arms get her to calm down when she gets an itchy attack or have her lay on my lap until she calms down and that helps alot |
