Help...My Yorkie was hit head with a baseball Has anyone had this happen to them? My Yorkie, Spike, is 9 months old, and my two children and I were playing catch, and my son who is 8 years old threw a wild ball and it hit Spike in the head. Spike collapsed, unconscious for a second and then came to, I scooped him up and took him inside and put ice on his head, when I put him down he was not really able to walk. A couple minutes later it was better but still not right. We took him into the emergency vet, and they said that neurologically he is intact, his pupils are reacting and normal. They gave him some pain meds, which is making him pant, and he is drooling--which is apparently a sign of being in pain. He is now at home resting--the drooling is better, he is walking again--but appears drunk--possibly from the pain meds. I have been searching the net for some info and everything I am reading is either really severe as in a car accident ending in death or not much help. Has anyone else had this happen? I am worried sick. |
Poor little Spike. I am glad you took him in to make sure he was okay. I hope he feels 100% soon! |
I think the Vet. should have taken an X-Ray or some type of scan. It's obvious he has a concussion. Did the Vet. at least tell you what to look for, and to bring him back "IF".......?? Goodness. I'd be worried to and I wish I could help you out here. Keep an eye on him for sure. I wouldn't let him go to sleep for quite awhile either. Keep us posted! |

Oh my goodness, that's so scary. I would definitely wake him every few hours, and take him to your regular vet tomorrow. Good luck, I hope lil Spike is feeling better soon! |
That's awful!! When I first got Ava, and she was 10 weeks old, she fell off of a chair, about 2 ft off the ground, on her HEAD!! She stopped breathing for a moment (I think it knocked the wind out of her) and was also drooling. I was obviously hysterical. After calls to the emerg vet and breeder, I decided to wait it out. It took her a few hrs to get back to normal. I hope he is ok! |
I hope your baby gets better....please keep us updated. |
what pain meds did they give you was it opium based like tramadol or buphenoral as that can make their heart beat faster |
I hope he is 100% better very soon! |
keep us posted on little Spike. I hope he feels better soon. |
I hope they checked to make sure there isn't any fracture. Your pup could have a concussion...make sure you watch him during the night and wake him every few hours....that's what I had to do when my son had a concussion (after they did a ctscan). My prayers are with you and your pup! :animal-pa |
Update on Spike... He is still groggy, but he is awake, he is walking around, he won't shake his head...I am assuming because he has a headache! He is shaky, thought it was low sugars--and I tried jelly beans and he wouldn't eat one...so I tried his dinner, half of a Caesar moist food...and he finally ate that. He won't take any water...I'll keep trying but the drooling has stopped. I am hoping that by tomorrow he is feeling better. I feel so bad for him...of all the things a wild throw could have possibly hit...it had to be his head. Ugh. I am kicking myself I even moved the kids so we were far enough away to NOT hit him...never minimize the possibility of a wild throw! I will update again tomorrow...thanks for all the kind thoughts!:dogzzz:I cannot imagine my life without him...or even if he is damaged in some way---I never thought I would feel this way about a dog, but this one has stolen my heart. |
The vet actually said there is no need to wake him every two hours like you do with a human. However my kids have managed to wake him often...so he is definately not comatose. He is responding to his name, I am keeping my fingers crossed that he will wake me up in the AM with kisses and having to go potty! Say a prayer for us! Thanks for the kind words. |
The vet did tell us to look for signs of worsening...excessive sleepiness and not able to walk or wimpering, blood from his nose or ears etc. They did mention a CT scan or x-rays but those are expensive and they did not feel that they were necessary at this time. I will follow up with our Vet tomorrow AM. |
When my puppy fell down a concrete step onto the patio right on her head. She immediately got up and walked but showed neuro signs so I rushed her to the vet. He gave her a Dexamethasone injection (to prevent swelling of the brain) and I took her home. Walking as if drunk is a neuro sign, if this is new, call your vet or take him back in to be seen again tonight, ASAP. |
:hands: Sending special prayers for little Spike. I really think like kjc that the dr should have done a scan, especially after being hit in the head with a baseball. I do hope he will be ok. I'm so sorry you're having to go thru this.:( |

Sending Prayers for yr little Spike & hoping he will be ok through the night. Hoping he recovers quickly and is back to himself soon! |
If he's walking like he's drunk he needs to go back to the vet ASAP this probably not from the meds and is not a good sigh. |
oh wow - he's lucky to have survived this and all the best to Spike ! I hope this gets better - head injuries are so scary |
I hope he is better today. |
I hope Spike is better today. I wouldn't be happy unless an x-ray or cat scan was taken of his head so I could feel better knowing he did not have a concussion. This is what I would do if he was my child just to be safe. Prayer's coming that Spike is much better today. |
How is Spike today? If he's not 100%, I'd suggest going back for an Xray or CT scan like the vet suggested. |
I hope Spike is okay. |

How is Spike doing today? Good I hope. Sending prayers... |
My little Spikers is doing great!!! This morning I woke up to doggie kisses at 7:30AM so he could go potty:D He is acting normal and running around and being himself. I couldn't be happier!! Thanks for all the well wishes!!! :animal36 I am sure he has a bruise so we are being careful with his head, and trying to keep him from bouncing off the walls...but he wants to play with his toys so we are trying to keep it to a minimum. Again--Thank you sooo much for the thoughts and prayers. |
Great to hear the good news! Hope he continues to do well... |
