Ear Cartilage damaged  I feel so awful, this morning as I was walking Tiffaney I noticed her head was hanging to the side, when I looked in her ear it was so swollen and smelled really badly. We rushed her to the Vet and they told us she had a damaged her Ear Cartilage. I never noticed her scratching or any odd behaviour. The vet told us to leave her there and they would do the surgery in the afternoon and then she would come home in the evening. Well at 4 PM they called me they couldn't do the surgery because right when I left her she started vomiting (twice) so they put her on an IV to hydrate her and kept her overnite to see if they can do the surgery tomorrow. I love my vet but she wasn't there today and this vet that saw us today was just plain rude. When I called to get an update on Tiffaney she said, "We only give updates to one person and we already gave an update to your daughter this morning" I just about ate her alive in a polite manner and holding myself back for the sake of Tiffaney's well being. I am a mess and I can't wait until tomorrow. I wasn't expecting this !!!! Has anyone had this surgery? Is it dangerous? and how is the recovery? Thank you all for your help :animal36 |
I dont know anything about the surgery but I wish your little one a speedy recovery! |
I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're saying. Did she scratch her ear and tear the ear? |
Sorry to hear about you your baby and your bad experience with the vet. How did it happen? I never heard of that type of surgery, is it more cosmetic? |
She was scratching the ear because she had an infection. I don't understand how when the groomer comes every two weeks and cleans out the ears (supposedly) The vet said the ears got infected because they weren't cleaned properly. She scratched and shook her head so much that she damaged her cartilage. So now they have to open up the ear drain it and put the skin back together. This is why it it so expensive too $900.00. She didn't seem like she was in pain until this morning . |

My daughter went with me and was listening to the vet. She had to explain it all to me when we left because I just lost it. I just thought it was an ear infection but when she said surgery and overnite I just tuned out. I was hoping someone on here had more information on this. |
She's only 7 years old but she has never been away from us. When the vet told me she was vomiting I told her it was because she was nervous and she said noooo in a very condesending way. I am so mad at them right now. But I have to wait until tomorrow to have the surgery. Thank you for the kind words !! |
If you'll repost this in the sick & injured section, someone should be on soon to help. I'll see what I can find out in the meantime. OK? Just copy and paste your thread there if you'd like to try it. |
OK. I found what I think is a very good article and it discusses all of the possibilities as well as describing the surgery. I hope that helps. I know you are very upset. I would be, too. Here is the link: Dog Ear Infection | Gomestic |
I am by no means an expert - but it seems to me that antibotics (both pills and cream) should do the trick? Surgery just seems a bit extreme? Let alone an overnight stay? I wish your vet was there for you today. Good luck and keep us posted. |
I think after this is all over, I would have a sincere talk with the Vet and tell him how upset he made you. What a jerk! Here you are completely over the top with fear and of the unknown and they only want to update the family once a day?! I don't get it. I feel so bad for you and your baby. I hope all goes well. Fingers crossed! ;) |
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I hope all goes well and will keep you both and the vet in my prayers. |
Hmmmm. Are you talking about the actual ear flap part? I've seen as a vet tech as well as had a dog of my own that has had the ear scratched to the point of getting blood filled between the skin in the ear cartilage. It did require surgery to release the blood in between the skin other wise it would cut off the blood flow to the rest of the ear and the tissue would die. It was surprising to me when I first saw it and was told it's more common in dogs with long ears that flap but not unheard of in dogs with upright ears. My boy Travis has a lot of hair in his ears and really doesn't like me to pull it but I do now. The hair in his ears was blocking the air from getting in and bacteria was building up. Travis is now 15 years old and recovered quickly from the surgery. Hopefully this is what you are experiencing and that vet and his communication, or lack of, was really uncalled for. |
Just in case what I described in my earlier post is what she has, here is a link that I found with some info. Dog Blood Behind Ear |
I wouldn't have been nice about them not updating more than one person. As long as you weren't calling every 20 minutes, I think it's perfectly normal to worry and call to check up on your baby! I would have ripped them a new one! I too love my vet, but if she ever pulls something like that, they will need to hold the phone at like arm's length to not have hearing damage!! I wish you luck and hope your baby is ok!!! |
Did they say she has a Hematoma ? This is broken blood vessels caused by infection or a foreign body in the ear causing the dog to scratch at the ear or shake it's head weakening the vessels in the ear flap. It is a fairly simple surgery and she should be fine if this is what it is. |
Awww your poor baby.....I pray she will be okay......I would be a wreck too...{{hugs}} On the vet being upset cause you called, OOOOOO He@@ noooooooooooo..(sorry) thats just wrong! Thats your baby!I would also have A LONG TALK, with your own vet tommorrow, on this other vet.. I am so sorry you had to go through that, at such a scary time... Please keep us informed, I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.. |

Vwitscher That is exactly what happened to my Tiffaney. Thank you everyone for your help. Last night I went to bed crying over this and my husband telling me we would go take her out and go to another vet if something wasn't done today. Today I called and they said she had a great night and her blood work was normal. So the surgery is on for 2PM. I am so upset and feel helpless. Her ear was causing her so much pain and nothing has been done for 24 hours. I feel like its about the money. I need to find myself a smaller vet office. These Vets are a very well known prominent group here in MIami Florida |
Sorry yes it is a Hematoma my daughter wrote everything down for me :) Since I was incapable of listening. Today when I go pick her up I will let them know how I feel and I am writing a letter to the central office |
Bailey was very sick a few months ago - throwing up. I took her to my vet - who was booked with surgeries all morning, but was told to bring her in anyway. This was at 6:00 a.m. - by 9:00 Bailey was tested, diagnosed and began treatment for pancreaitus (sp?). I had received three phone calls during that time - twice from the doctor and once from a tech. The treatment required an overnight stay. I was encouraged to visit or call anytime!! I visited Bailey three times - they brought me a chair so that I could stay and hold her. The doctor, the back up doctor (along with several other techs) all stopped by to discuss Bailey. Everyone was genuinely concerned about my baby! It was the best experience possible under such circumstances. Get well soon, Tiffiney! |

I'm thinking of you and your sweet little girl. I was checking to see if there was any news. I see the surgery is at 2:00. I'm so sorry she has to go thru this. Special thoughts and prayers just for Tiffany. |
Just got off the phone with the girl at the front desk who says that Tiffaney is out of surgery and she did Great. No details, the Doctor did not come to the phone :( They told me to go pick her up between 6 PM to 9PM. So I said I would be there at 6 PM. My pups have never been sick or needed andy type of urgent care. This office is so well respected in the community and honestly never had a problem with them. But it seems to me that if they cannot treat us (parents) in a respectable manner then its time to move on but not withourt giving them a piece of my mind. I am just happy at this point that she is no longer in pain because of the infection. My poor baby she had to wait so long. I will keep everyone posted later this evening when I bring her home. |
Well, I'm glad it's over. The three hours waiting to get her will drag by for you, but at least they aren't keeping her overnight. Don't feel so bad for not knowing about her ear. It wasn't your fault. Take care.... |
2 Attachment(s) Tiffaney is home.... my poor baby her ear is a mess and so many meds, but she is a trooper and full of energy> She was so happy to see her brothers and sisters. Now she is resting and I guess relieved to be home. We have to go back in 10 days to recheck and in 21 days to get the sutures (sp?) removed with my regular vet. At which ime I will let her know what happened. I have to stay with them for now to follow up. Can you believe that the Doctor never called us to let us know how the surgery went. I had to call and I spoke to the girl at the front desk. Tonight the girl said that the vet was in the back with another patient and she had left me the instructions for the meds. But again no call or information. At this point I am wondering, am I over reacting with the attention that I am expecting? Like I said before I've never thankfully had an emergency like this with my pups. I want to thank all of you here on YT for your support and prayers. I love this forum !!!:D |
Awww, I bet she's so happy to be back home with you!! She looks like she has good "poor me, give me attention" eyes:) I'm sorry the vet treated you like that, I trust my vet, but when she's not there and it's an emergency, I dread going!! So sad how it's all about the money these days:( |
Thank you BanditSocks2 !!! Believe me she is getting all the attention and those eyes are making it so easy LOL. I definitely feel it is all about the money. They made my poor baby wait 24 hours in pain to charge me an overnite fee of $200.00 in addition to the $900.00 surgery. So frustrating !!! |
I'm tickled she is now home with you. Just look at that face! She makes you want to pick her up and try to make it all better, doesn't she?:( She's where she wants to be now, at least. You'll need to get her a stick-on diamond stud to match the value of her ear now!:) JK I'm so happy she's back with you. I know you were worried to death. Probably didn't sleep much last night, either. You're both worn out, so perhaps you can take a nap together.:) |
