Clindamycin tablets
 

ok very frustrated now

Dee Dee has staph back i believe so taking her back to derm tomorrow at 9:30. I have called hospital, 2 vets and derm and none carry the virbac clintabs. Our vet said he would order for me for $200 for a bottle of 400 25mg as that is the smallest bottle virbac sells and i called virbac and it is $95 for a bottle but i cannot order and i do not need 400 tablets only about 7 tablets appx to do 1/4 for 25 days

also hospital told me clindamycin capsules were recalled on some manufacturers - GREAT but virbac said they do not have a recall on theirs. I called their distributor wepster but they cannot give me a vet in my area that is purchasing these so i have to call every vet in area to see who carries it - UNBELIEVEABLE

I guess because it is a newer drug in tablet form ?? they do not carry it and most vets carry liquid and capsule and my dd does better on pills than liquid

so frustrated so if anyone has any ideas that would be great

so i called banfield and they have it but will not fill a prescription for me as they will have to see her to give me the drugs $45 - this profession drives me NUTS -why can they not fill a prescription like a pharmacy and i do not beleive costco has 25mg tabs of clindamycin - just so unfair every one has to get their fair share i guess or the dog suffers

Can you get it compounded into smaller capsules? I've had to do that with Lady for some human medications that don't come in tablet form.

yeah called compounding pharmacy and they will do in capsules but they are pretty big he said :( so driving over there as he said he will show me the capsules as he believes she needs 30mg as he said 1.2 mil of 25mg liquid is about 30 mg - my head is spinning - he said $43 for 25 capsules

also that shampoo you get from entirely pets does it have any fragrance in it as i may give that a shot as well as chlorhexedine seemed to work but i may get it as a back up too - i shampooed her monday in hypoallergenic shampoo and wished i did chlorhexedine instead and saw the bumps back again and started to cry -- i may spray her with the chlorhexedine spray - i want to jump on this right away so i get it under control asap - derm said last time to stop antibiotic 7 days after all lesions are gone so hoping she will not have to be on this for 25 days again as she was getting the chills from it towards end but vet had no clue why nor did compounding pharmacy yet pet meds says if dog gets chills to stop and call vet :(

does lady get recurring staphs as i have never dealt with this except for this past year so i am going to start the raw coconut oil back up again

just so bummed she has had a horrible year this year :(

compounding pharmacist said it was really bitter the liquid too :( poor thing no wonder she hated it - vet said to put in fridge as it will taste better so did that but bottle says keep in room temperature :(

Yes, Lady gets recurring staph infections. She has been diabetic for 7.5 years so she has a very weak immune system. I constantly battle staph, especially on her neck area where she gets her insulin shots.

I try to check her skin daily when I brush her. If I can catch a lesion right away, one application of Clearasil usually takes care of it, believe it or not.

Benzoyl-Plus doesn't seem to have fragrance added from the ingredients and smells odorless to me. I use it maybe every 4 weeks or so, but only on the areas Lady is having trouble with. It's very drying so I don't like to use it on her whole coat, although this brand has a moisturizer in it.

Cephalexin works best when she needs a prescription. I've never heard of Clindamycin for staph, but maybe it works when other antibiotics have not? I just had to take it for a new crown that abscessed and ended up needing a root canal. That stuff will destroy your digestive system so watch out! Diarrhea is a common side effect.

Have you ever considered collostrum/transfer factor? I absolutely swear by it. I started Lady on it three years ago when she was just a mess and her bloodwork was so bad her vet estimated she only had six months to live. Her insulin need is half what it was before I started Transfer Factor.

yeah she got hives on simplicef 17 days in to the antibiotic :( was so bummed so we did a skin culture to see what other antibiotic and this one came up - luckily she did not get diarhea as i doubled the dose of probiotics i use so i gave her 2 capsules in am and 2 in pm so she got two doses after she got the antibiotic in pm so i think that might have helped

can you send me link of clearisil you used maybe i can try that as it just started on her side

the coconut and probiotic kept her healthy but now this past year has been a nightmare sadly but the one good thing is her blood work is perfect but she is do now for her 6 month so was thinking of driving her to jean dodds before i start the antibiotic to see if anything else is going on. She has lost alot of her hair on her back:( has lady lost her hair too?

I use the regular Clearasil vanishing formula (white). Any drug store will have it. It's 10% benzoyl peroxide which is why it is so effective on staph.

Lady had a spot under her armpit last Fall that I didn't catch until it was pretty large and her hair is still a bit sparse there, but coming back.

This is the colostrum I just ordered. It was the one recommended by the Great Dane Lady website. Up until now I have been using Transfer Factor, but it's way more expensive for the same thing.

Oh, dear. Is that her back? Lady doesn't have the hair loss Dee Dee does. Her lesions are more localized, too.

Here is a picture I took when she had a bad outbreak on her neck a few years ago. The other is a recent picture where her skin looks very clear.....temporarily! You can see she hasn't lost her hair, though. It's been a constant battle for the past few years.

thanks for the pics - yeah the hairloss was since may of last year :( when it all started but she is on steroids as well so they are not sure if steroids or staph - so bummed she is going to be a bald yorkie soon if i do not get this under control :( they say it can ruin the hair follicles if they get bacteria infections - i really think the hairloss is from staph though as she had a thin coat prior but no where near this thin - heart breaking

have you ever heard of marina zaccharias and natural coritisone before ? Does lady have allergies?

We've had staph several times. Usually for small involvement, we apply Mupirocin Ointment 2x a day and it clears up. For more involvement, we've used Clavamox with good results.

With clindamycin, I'd make sure to give probiotics as this is one nasty antibiotic.

I'm so sorry Dee Dee is going through another bout with staph. :(

Just a thought.... I did an online search on clindamycin 25mg tablets as well as virbac clintabs. It seems clintabs are only sold by the bottle but generic brand tabs you can buy however much you need (online)and they cost alot less too, about 69 cents each.

If you don't mind the generic brands, maybe you can find them more easily and perhaps the vets would be more willing to sell you by the tab.

thanks yeah last time we doubled up probiotics and worked great - good to know clavamox worked too as i know that one is more mild so maybe she will use that one as i think that came up on sensitivity test as well but they have to use it in high doses i think - i will find out tomorrow - so bummed

cool where did you see that can you link it as i called costco and they said they only sell 150mg tablets :(

That is not true. When my Vet did not have a drug in stock I needed, I was able to take a paper prescription to the Banfield and they filled it for me there. I would double check with Banfield the corporation not the individual location. Good Luck

Oh the other thing you can try is to see if you have a compounding pharmacy by you. They can change the liquid into a solid for you

yeah i called the compounding pharmacy and they only do capsules not tablets :( and they can make up the liquid as well but no tablets :(

I wish the vets could act as pharmacies but everytime they will not fill a prescription from a specialist unless they see my dog and i think that is wrong it is like they want to get there office visit fee even if they have seen them in the past year and that is wrong to me :( especially since dd gets colitis when i take her to vet so not only do i have to deal with fee, missing work i also have to deal with diarrhea for no reason :(

well not sure if Dee Dee can try the mupirocin ointment d/t her allergies, but we now keep it on hand - vet derm recommended. I had my PCP write it for me and I share it with the kiddos. I put it on the spots whenever i see one and i usu. can avoid antibiotics. Barney gets them 1-2 x a year with late summer and winter allergies (more so now that he's getting older)

Clavamox did work pretty quickly.

I will tell you that one time an injection of steroid (Vetalog) prolonged the infection. Vet Derm did not support (regular vet had done it).

I just remembered, we have a very large ER and specialty hospital here they have there own pharmacy do you have anything like that near you?

This is a pet peeve of mine as well. I feel like if you can't help me with a metronidazole Rx over the phone for my dog that has IBD and MVD when I am a good customer who shells out a good amount every year on three dogs, then what do I need you for? Oh and usually they want to "rule out parasites" every time too - even though my dogs are on interceptor and dont tromp in other dogs poo outside the pack etc etc. It's frustrating. It's over $100 every time! I've resorted to probiotics - we see diarrhea, they get probiotics 2-3x a day until clear. Well unless we are out of town and our petsitters can't handle that as was the case last month.....ok enough of my soapbox...getting off now...

I've used Mucpirocin on Lady for staph before, too. It works really well. Greasy as heck, though, isn't it? :eek:

Deb, Lady does have allergies, too. I swear by fatty acids and colostrum to boost her immune system.

I have read that dogs with severe staph allergies sometimes benefit from immunotherapy/injections. Has your dermatologist ever mentioned it to you?

Went to two banfields neither will do prescription from derm they said they have to see dog or no go and i said if i call corporate are they going to give me a different answer and she said no bc corporate told them they will lose their license if they act like a pharmacy - crazy stuff i tell ya - a racket man

Yes it's greasy. I have the mupirocin cream also but I think the ointment is better. It beats antibiotics though, and a trip to the vet :-)

do you mean the hyposensitization shots? yeah i have been nervous about them as i have heard it makes some dogs worse so i am afraid but she has had staph lysate injections when this all started 5 1/2 years ago with a holistic vet but derm does not do those i do not believe cannot remember why

our vet mentioned convenia shot again and had to remind him a second time she got hives from simplicef and he went OOOPS sorry forgot about it - they kill me never read the charts :( convenia and simplicef are in the same antibiotic family

do you use the coconut oil as a fatty acid - i had good success with it with dd so going to start her after appt tomorrow i think. i have to order another jar as the organic we get is only good for 6 mos and very expensive so have to call and order another jar :( I always worry about fatty acids after the pancreatitis we went through with dex and dd always has high lipase on blood work which is a sign of fat digesting enzyme high and being on steroids i get nervous as i do not want to battle pancreatitis and steroids with her :(

Daisy does not get the staph but she has severe allergies (in addition to her MVD and IBD) and she's been doing well on coconut oil. She was balding on her nose and around her eyes and between the fish oils she takes and now the coconut oil, I'm seeing an improvement!

yeah called them and they do not carry tablets either - i know the lady that handles the meds she is way cool but she emailed me back no go on that -ughhh

cool as dd was looking good with coconut oil and it is natural antibacterial and antifungal so i need to go for it just so scared to do anything anymore as she spins out of control on me and the diarrhea scares me with her as coconut oil can trigger diarrhea but i will start with 1/8 tsp every other day and work up to 1/4 daily is what i was doing before for a couple years - her skin was getting greasy though is all
