Please Help...need advice on surgery for legg-perth disease Pixie has been limping since jan 28th. At first I took her to a vet near my new house as I just moved and they though she just had a muscle problem or possible luxating patella. She did not improve so I took her to my regular vet a week and a half later and x-rays showed that she may have legg-perth. We repeated the x-ray on monday march 8th and it is getting worse. The specialist that would be doing the surgery for her leg looked at the latest x-ray via email and felt that he didnt see enough deteriation from the last x-ray and suggested we wait longer and do another x-ray in a couple of weeks. My vet thinks that we should still go ahead and do surgery next week as Pixie's leg is still lame and atrophy has set in along time ago. I agree with my vet but I'm worried that I will be making the wrong decision. Pixie's right leg is half the size of her left and I'm worried that if we put it off longer it will end up taking her longer to recover from surgery since muscle will be almost all gone. If she is going to need surgery, sooner would be better. The way it looks is that she will need the surgery so why put it off. What should I do? |
I'm so sorry. But I'm glad that things can be fixed thru surgery. I really have very little knowledge about legges perthes but I think I agree with you. If she's limping I would think she's in pain and things aren't going to get better so what use is it to wait? I know there are others on here who have gone thru this and hopefully they will respond as well... |

so very sorry that you little one is going thru this. I would have to say that if surgery is inevitable, then I would lean towards doing it sooner so the healing process can begin. :) My Hot Rod had surgery last year for lp. Best of luck to you and your little one. |
I am assuming they are planning on doing a FHO (femoral head ostomy). I had a pup that had this surgery. He had lived in pain for many years when he came to me and limped....his muscle had also atrophied as you describe. He had the surgery and it took a while, but he did regain full use of the leg and also developed the muscle. I also had another with a bit different surgery, but with extreme muscle atrophy...and the improvement took a few months, but it is amazing how they do recover. Their muscles, like ours, atrophy if not being used; but with exercise they do come back. Good luck and keep us posted on this! :) |
Pixie will be going for her surgery on Thursday, March 18th. That is 3 days before her 1st Birthday! Poor thing!! I'm so nervous on what is going to be instore for her! She will be getting the Femeral head removed. Hope she can have a normal life after... She has been through soo much! |

They are encouraged to walk following this surgery. At least mine was. He did just fine and actually had both hips done at the same time! |
Bo was diagnosed with Leggs Parthes when he was 8 months old. I was on here looking to see what I should do. I too was scared. Bo had the surgury 2 months after that. He came through with flying colors. They took out the ball of the ball and socket in his rear left leg. He healed up very quickly, It has been a year now, He runs around with his sister Baylei like nothing had ever happened. I would recommend this to anyone with my expierience. I would have to say he is 95% anyway. The cost at my vet was just under $900. |

Thanks for all the advice and info ladies! I just dropped Picie off at the vets and I'm sooo nervous! I can't believe that Bo's surgery was only $900!! Today is going to cost me $2500-3000! Pixie is also getting puppy canine teeth pulled too though! I really hope everything goes smoothly today! |
I thought that price was cheap, too! We pay more here for that surgery. Anyway....I will keep your Pixie in my thoughts and prayers today. I am sure she will do just fine. Let us know when you hear something! :) |
