I just want you to know that you and Bruizer will be in our prayers, I hope that he starts feeling better soon. It is odd that he was acting spunky before and now is tired. Please keep us posted. |
Pippin was throwing up several weeks ago and the vet put him on antibiotics. My daughter works for a medical microbiologist who worked at UC Davis for over a decade and worked closely with veterinary scientists. Although they focused more on primates, a lot of the intestinal medicine applies to other species, including dogs. She said to give him a half teaspoon of plain yogurt. It replaces the good bacteria cultures that the antibotics kill and assists the animal's digestive system in functioning smoothly. She also suggested cooking plain white rice in chicken broth (instead of water) and giving him a small amount to provide some nutrients while still taking it easy on his upset stomach. Pippin didn't complain. He loved the rice and yogurt, and he had no trouble keeping it down. I asked my vet before giving him the yougurt and he agreed with giving it to him. |
I tried to feed him the food that the vet gave me and he wouldn't touch it! He also won't drink anything and he is still swollen from the fluids that they gave him yesterday. My 17 year old daughter is going to stay with him today so I can go to work and see if she can get him to eat. He won't even hardly lick ice cubes. He seems worse instead of better! I'm really worried!! |
Where is he swollen? Did they give him IV fluids or subcutaneous (under the skin). I have never heard of a pup being swollen from fluids, unless it was subcutaneous fluids. If he has an infection, his appetite may be poor. Did the vomiting cease? |
He is going back to the vet now. They want to do the test for his pancreas? I have never heard of this. Can anyone give me any info on what would cause this and how it is treated? They also want to do more blood work. He is going to be so upset :(. But, we have to get him eating and drinking and feeling better again. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michelle |
Pancreatitis is very common in yorkies. I am sure there will be a bunch of posts in a little while about it. For now, here are a couple of links so you can read a bit about it: Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs Pancreatitis - Learn about signs, treatment and prevention of pancreatitis in dogs and cats Hope all goes well at the vet. If it is pancreatitis, he will more than likely need a few days of IV fluids. |
Sending good wishes for your baby. Hope today is a better day for him. If it is pancreatitis, which is sounds like, meds will take care of it and iv fluids. You'll have to be very careful with his diet down the road. Buddy had it once so I know how frightening it can be. Hugs, |
He has all of these symptoms! He even seems depressed as they describe! I hope the vet can figure out if this is what he has or not. |
I called to check on him and the lady told me that the vet was in surgery with another dog. She said Bruizers bloodwork came back but, the vet wanted to call me himself when he got out of surgery. I'm worried!! |

Take a deep breath! I am sure there are some issues with the lab work, since clearly he is not feeling well. That does not mean it is something that is not treatable. The vet should be the one who gives you the results and consults with you about what he thinks they mean....and what treatments are needed. Listen to him well....have a pen ready and take some notes so you don't forget. Let us know what happens! And try to think positive!! :) |
Thank you! I'm sure that he will be fine! We took him to the vet as soon as he started showing symptoms. We have suffered a loss of one of our babies. We just need Bruizer to be ok. He is a strong little one. Thanks again, Michelle I'll keep you updated on what the vet says. |

Michelle, I'm so sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. I am praying hard for little Bruizer and your whole family. It sounds like your doctor is on the ball, which is great news. If it does turn out to be pancreatitis - that's manageable. Bruizer has been a healthy little boy, remember that. He is not Buster!! I know you had so much heartache with your other little one, but I believe Bruizer is going to be just fine! It's amazing how these guys can worry us so much - it would be so much better if they could just tell us what was wrong. I'm here if you need to talk - just pm me, ok? Be strong for Bruizer and keep us updated. {Hugs} |
Hoping for good news on Bruizer. |
He can't go wrong with that name...Bruizer! I have a cockatiel named Tuffy that I have had for over 22 years...that is a very long life for a cockatiel and I have always said it is because we named him Tuffy. :D |
