yelping in pain :( ??? This evening Mija was fine one minute and all of a sudden she starts yelping at the top of her lungs. She wasn't near anything and hadn't done anything that could have hurt her. I tried to pick her up but she just sat down abruptly yelping even louder. She then moved away from me and changed positions every 5 seconds like if she was very uncomfortable. She tried stretching (like a cat would; paws infront of her bum up in the air) and lying down on the floor with her paws infront of her (which she never does). When I tried to touch her to see where her pain was coming from she would just yelp even louder. When she calmed down and I finally got to touch her she was really stiff and I could see in her face she didn't feel well. It took her a few minutes to get up and walk to her bed. She seems fine now, she ate and played like she always does and does not seem to be in pain anywhere. I called my vet while it was all happening and she said it could be a number of things and told me to wait and see, but shes fine now so I still dont know. I just can't think of what could have happened to her for her to start yelping like that...i'm so worried. Shes so tiny and has been through so much that I hate to think that something is wrong again. Has anyone ever lived this or know what it might have been? |
Did she recently get any vaccinations? My Zeus was in horrible pain the day after getting his shots. Wouldn't even let us touch him. Glad she seems to be doing better now. Keep us posted on how she does. |
no her last vaccines were in october and she hasn't been through anything traumatic either. It was so random... thanks anyways! |
She could have had a muscle spasm in her back or something. I have heard they can be a real pain to the babies. I know they are a pain to me, so I can only imagine for them. They happen pretty quick so maybe?? Hope nothing serious. xox! |
Keep an eye on her. Hope all is well....Keep us posted |
What do you mean "she's been through so much" - did she have health issues before that might offer clues? It could be digestive - given her position of butt in the air like that. Is her tummy grumbling, gassy or hard? Did you switch food? Did you feed her anything fatty, btw? |

I'd have to agree about a muscle spasm, they are very painful. The stretching would be a pretty good indicator of that. I'd say just watch her too as long as she seems fine now. |

I imagine dogs get muscle spasms like humans but am not sure...also - maybe her tummy hurt ? - man - that could be so many things ..... |
My dog recently exhibited similar behavior and symptoms as Mija, aside from the yelping. It was severe gas and constipation in Maximo's case. Hope Mija is feeling better today. |
thanks everyone! Mija is doing great this morning! Although I didn't get much sleep because I was constantly checking up on her :p! I know it wasn't constipation and she hadn't eaten anything other than her kibble, so nothing new. The muscle spasm makes sense though...especially since she didnt seem to be hurting anywhere when I touched her afterwards. Im just so glad she's ok now! |

It was not related to what had happened to her before. When I said she's been through so much, it was just because there is always something going on with her. 5 days after I got her she almost died from a virus that was in the water at the breeders. Later she almost died again because her blood sugar was too low even if we gave her supplements-she's hypoglycemic. Then she gets the shot for kennel cough and she develops it. She somehow managed to get into my closed purse!? and open a pack of gum then proceed to eating most of it...the gum contained xylitol which is toxic. She's a tough one but I just hate to think that this was another thing that would make her suffer :( |

I didn't think it was a seizure because my neighbors little poodle is epileptic and i've seen her having a seizure a few times and it was nothing like that. There was no vomitting or diarhea and she had pooped that morning and again last night like she usually does so no constipation. She's had blood work and all done before but I think i'll take her to the vet anyways so im 100% positive everything is ok. |

I would get the bats and blood work just to be safe |

there are other things that affect the spine as well so maybe have an xray done to check out her spine or wait and see if it happens again if it happens again then maybe do testing if she is acting fine but keep an eye on her as it takes alot of pain for them to cry out as they are the masters of hiding pain :( so she must have been in a lot of it. The prayer position could mean digestive and they can still get constipated on their kibble - some people do dry in am and wet in pm so you may want to try that out if you think it could be that |
She's a year and a half and she doesn't have LP, she's been checked for that. Her last blood work was in october. She wasn't doing anything before it happened, she had just walked over to come see me. And she never complains about anything so I know something was wrong for her to scream like that. Im just so worried about her:( |

did you notice any pain in her neck area? was she dazed afterwards like a glazed over eye look? what percentage of protein are you feeding? |
|
if doing blood work take in urine sample as well to make sure no stones |
Omg that must have been so scary for you :( She would not let me touch her while she was yelping but afterwards I touched her gently everywhere to see where her pain was coming from and she didnt seem to be hurting anywhere and she wasn't dazed. The only kibble she will eat is the Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers and she eats 1/3 of a cup about every 24hrs...its says 28% protein on the bag is that it? |
thank you so much for your help! |
I called my vet and they'll take her as soon as i get there so we're off to the vet. Lets hope its all good news. |

my Tiggy refused to eat the Royal Canine for Yorkies and Precious did eat it, but would get so constipated and cry and yelp every time she went poo:eek:, it always took her forever to go and she would struggle every single time so I stopped feeding it to them! They won't eat anything but Beneful Original, except when Precious was pregnant/nursing, then they would all eat Puppy Chow. How long have you been feeding the RC to your baby? Maybe try switching her food will help:). Good luck, I'm glad she seems to be doing fine now |
My last girl when she would have a seizure would yelp out like in pain and then get very stiff. It only lasted a few mins. But with my girl she would also stop breathing and we would have to give her CPR. |
Mija is doing very well. I had blood work, bats, urine sample, and x-rays done and everything came back noraml...so its still a mystery. The vet said that maybe she was numb somewhere and had never felt like that before so she panicked and started yelping...but I don't think she would have yelped that loud if she hadn't been in any real pain. Anyways I'm just gald she's ok and healthy :) As for the food i'm going to change that asap. I had no idea a high protein percentage could cause problems :S. She's been eating it for about 8 months now and its the only kind she actually eats with an appetite...do you have any suggestions for a good kibble?? Thanks everyone for your help! :) |
Glad to hear that Mija's lab work came back normal. Some of the better known foods are high in protein. I thought anything below 25g of protein was good for Yorkies. I am sure more experienced Yorkie Talkers can weigh in on a good kibble. Best wishes! :aimeeyork |
