I have faith that he will be OK but he was sure a sick little guy. The thing with this disease is that he probably had it progressing for a couple years or more. It has been about a year since I thought he was getting fat and a pot belly and then in the last two weeks it got enormous. I actually have him at the Purdue University vet hospital. They have confirmed the disease but have told me the prognosis in yorkies is not the greatest. Other breeds have a better prognosis. They called me this morning and told me he ate yesterday and last night but not this morning. They have him on more than one medication at this time via IV. They are trying to get his protein level up. The fluid is still and will continue to seep into his abdomen. Since yesterday 1/2 lb iof fluid has seeped back in. All yorkie owners need to read up on this disease and be mindful of it. |
Awww, you must be so worried. I will read up on this. My little guy has a fat belly too, and I had him tested for cushings disease, but they never mentioned this. I sure hope that with meds Cocoa will come through this. I will include you both in my prayers. Hang in there. Let us know how he is progressing in the coming days. We'll all be rooting for Cocoa!! |

Thanks for that info. I will certainly check it out. I have Cocoa at home now. I am not sure for how long. They did not do a plasma transfusion. All his blood work did come back with low protein etc. I am waiting on the results of the biopsy which I should get back today. I can definately see how his muscle has decreased in his body. He also has edema on his skin. That may not be spelled correctly. It is when fluid is between the layer of his skin. Its anot confirmation of the protein loss The hospital that I took him to is Purdue University hospital. I was told that if anyone could save him they could. They are known to be the best in the state. It is a veterinary school and have many specialists there. I will pass on this info to them to be sure they have covered all bases. I have to take him back on Monday for a check up and test to see where his protein level is at. They did speak of protein injections. They have him on a high protein/low fat diet that is made by Royal Canin. I have always fed my babies Royal Canin 28 for yorkies. |
I just got a call from the Vet with the biopsy results. It appears there is no sign of Lymphangiectasia. No cancer either. I guess that is all good news but my dog is losing protein. I did give the vet all the info that you gave me. Thanks again. Now we have to change his diet again. It is just frustrating when you can't get to the problem. I hate seeing him become so frail. Today his muscles seemed weak. I took him out to pee and he had problems getting back in the house. I had to help him get up the step. Two hours prior to that he hopped up the stairs in our house and followed me to the bedroom. :) |
