I hope someone can give me some insight...we adopted a 3 year old little girl last week and noticed blood in her urine..alot of blood. Took her right to the vet where he did a urinalysis as well as a blood test. I thought that she maybe had a bladder stone since she has had them in the past. Tests came back with a high red cell count in urine, but not alot of white cells. There are NO crystals in the urine. She also eats brown rice, cottage cheese and chicken baby food. This is the diet the former owners where told to feed her because of her previous bladder stones. The vet prescribed 20mg. of zelaquin (sp.?) once daily for 14 days. If that does not help...we will have to do xrays, ultra sound, etc. Well, we are on day 5 of the zelaquin and blood showed up again today after disappearing for 3 days. Should this be happening still? I am soo worried and would appreciate any input. TIA

If she were mine, I'd go to ultrasound right now 1) because she has had stones before and it's best to check, and 2) xrays are worthless when ammonium urate stones are a possibility which are not uncommon in Yorkies. However, if she just had struvite before, you may be able to go with an xray.

Also, while she may need a special diet, the one she is currently on is not balanced and, over time, it could lead to other very serious health problems.

I 100% agree - i personally do not like to give meds unless i know exactly what is going on

Yes, xrays or ultrasounds will be next. She is on day 5 of the zelaquin. I finally got her drinking by putting water in her food. Now there is only blood at the end of her peeing...like she is straining to get that last bit out, and then the drops of blood. Her urine was originally all dark and bloody..resembling cider. Now it looks normal except for the blood at the very end. Does this sound like it is getting better?? TIA

Hopefully it is an indication she is improving but I would want the vet to do another check on her. I hope she gets better soon.

sounds like getting better but i would still do ultra sound and xray myself as i would want to know and dogs with stones do well on natural balance vegetarian diet - they need low protein

Yes, that is the drug. As far as the food, I love Natural Balance. My maltese is on the allergy formula. I will definately try the vegetarian for Bitsy. Not as much blood tonight...hopefully there will be none in the AM. I tricked her into drinking a bowl of water by putting it in her food. She is still having lots of accidents in the house though... I know she was supposed to be housebroken, but I am wondering if she is having accidents because of her infection or because she is in a new home? I really appreciate everyone's input. Hopefully this too, shall pass.

probably because she is sick :( poor thing - try the vegetarian it is the lowest protein

Just wanted to give you all an update on Bitsy..only a few drops of blood at the end this morning. This afternoon, no blood. It seems after she finishes...she pushes and strains until she sqeezes out a few drops of blood. I guess she still has the feeling that she isn't done yet. She is still peeing everywhere though... Thanks for everyone's input!

yeah i would have her checked out further by xray and ultrasound if this is still happening at end something is triggering the blood when bladder is empty and could be stones

Sounds like possibly a UTI or Kidney infection could be causing the blood as well, however, I am with everyone else; after all meds have been finished I would ask for a ultrasound/xray just as a precaution.

Just wanted to give you terrific folks an update on Bitsy. She hasn't had blood in days and she is no longer having accidents in the house. We have decided that we need to feed her 3 smaller meals a day, and put lots of water in her food to get her to drink. Unfortunately, tricking her is the only way to get this girl to drink. :p I switched her to the Natural Balance vegetarian that was suggested as well. She will be on the antibiotic until Monday. So far so good! :)

Uh Oh. I am afraid I might have spoken too soon. I think I might have seen a drop of blood this morning. :eek: Not sure though, by the time I ran inside to get a papertowel to dab it up, it had already dissolved into the concrete. I was looking on the Natural Balance Vegetarian bag and it has the same amount of Protein as the Duck and Potato formula that my maltese eats, but it is obviously protein from vegetables. So my question is, are struvite stones caused by animal or ANY protein??? Is there maybe too much proteing in the NB Vegetarian even though it is vegetable??? i am so confused and nervous. :confused::confused: TIA!

i still think you need to have ultrasound and xray since this baby has had stones before. The vegetarian is an easily digestible protein and why it is recommended for liver disease dogs along with fish protein so you are ok it is not the food i think she may have some stones though so you need to rule this out :(

We do not know what kind of stone it could be since her urine PH is 6.5 and there are no crystals. Her surgery is April 7th and can't come soon enough. In the last 2 days she has been peeing small amounts all over the house every 5 minutes!!! She is on more zeniquin until then. It seems to have gotten bad really fast over the past few days, although she is acting normal. Please send prayers for my girl!! Thanks

Oh geez, sorry to hear this, however, I am glad that they found out exactly what was causing it. Now finding out what type of stone it is, so that you can accomodate her diet to that information will be the next best step.

Will keep her in our prayers, think positive, it will be here before you know it!:thumbup:

yikes it has been 30 days poor thing thought you were taking her in for ultrasound or xray sooner :( glad you got to the bottom of it and she is getting it removed - let us know what type of stone - we will pray for her for sure

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get her there sooner financially. :( She was being treated what we thought was UTI. She didn't show any signs of a stone, nor did her urine test.:confused: So I didn't feel there was any rush until I see more blood this week. I am wondering if a UTI could have caused a stone? Now she is straining and showing the signs of a stone. I feel really bad that I didn't rush to get the xray. But atleast now we know. I just wish she could have her surgery sooner.....thanks for the prayers.:)

girl we kept telling you to take her in for xray and ultrasound but i understand these vets are super expensive at least here and it makes me mad that everything has to cost so much :( do you have CareCredit Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures as i got that for emergency situations just in case as a back up. At least you know now and she is going to get her surgery and once you know what kind of stone then you can do a correct diet to prevent them from happening again. I do know natural balance vegetarian is good for dogs with stones depending on the kind as it is low in protein and high protein can cause stones

I have just received a new credit card with 0% until October!!! :) so the surgery is covered. My wonderful new vet doesn't overcharge either, so the surgery is costing less than I anticipated. Has anyone ever used Solid Gold Berry Balance. I have read good reviews and have started giving it to Bitsy. It is good for struvite stones. But I am wondering if it would hurt her if the stones are the other kind? Any thoughts?? TIA

i think you need to see what type of stones before supplementing as that is going to be key in how you move forward with her diet

I'm surprised that your vet is waiting until April 7 to do the surgery. When it was found that Chipper had bladder stones he was operated on immediately.
