how did this little one get ct was it from a collar or something? I know my friend's maltese got it from the vet using the wrong tube under anesthesia as her dog went under for a skin biopsy and came out with ct :( it was horrible and they had to go to cardiologist etc as her dog was older but it all started after her dog went under for this procedure and the dog was perfectly fine before :( |
Cupid Thank you everyone for the prayers!! I am going to try and get there today...and I have a bunch of questions to ask as someone one another group (LS group I am on) had a pup with pnemonia and gave me a bunch of info. They are also now concerned about liver issues as some of his numbers are off on his blood work, but before we can look into that we need his lungs cleared and him breathing on his own. Looking at his x-rays it looks like his trachea problem is further down the trachea..meaning they don't feel there was any damage to his by use of a collar or something like that. The top part of his trachea looked good..then as soon as you are out of the neck the size of it get 1/4 smaller...do not know the cause...they feel there might be a mass pushing up on the trachea or it is just all the fluid in the lungs...they cannot see everything because of all the fluid...they are going to ultra-sound at some point. He has not been neutered so I don't feel there has been any damage from being intubated...but because of the small size of the trachea it is causing him a harder time to have a productive cough which is what he needs... It is snowing here...and he is 45 minutes away from me, but I am still going to try and get there to see him..to feed him and for him to know that he is loved... I am happy he came to us..and not back to where he came from. But I agree people don't realize how expensive vetting can be... |
They are trying to lower the % of oxygen in his tank...so that is good news! If you want to see him you can go to Yorkies Inc. Placement Service to see a picture of him...I cannot put a picture on here...no idea how to! |
Lomotil is a Human med for loose stools also,,, go figure ! |

He is hanging in. Yesterday I was able to hold him for a couple minutes. I gave him his food. He just looks at you with his big eyes ...makes you melt. They are still trying to lower the amount of oxygen he is getting...waiting to hear from the vet today. I will post his blood work later this afternoon...I have to go babysit right now. Yes as of yesterday when I went to see him his vet bill was $3800... it is almost $500 day just to be in the oxygen cage... it adds up so quickly! |

I am hopeful he does not have CT and that the pneumonia has simply caused inflammation in that area. Sounds like it could be that since the problem seems to be located in the thoracic area of the trachea. As the vet said, only time will tell on that. Cupid is in my thoughts daily. I so know how it is to have these sick pups. |

The labs will let us know how bad the liver values are and is not a bad idea to start getting more info on that to tackle the next health issue once this is done never hurts to gather the info and maybe alt numbers are high due to meds depending on what they are using |
Oh, Kerri, I meant to post that it would be helpful to ask the vet about Cupid's PO2. I am assuming it is still a bit low since he is still on O2. Poor little guy. I really hope he is out of there soon! |
Yes,the most important thing is his pnemonia..as if he does not get over that it does not matter about whether he has CT or LS/MVD. He was at 50% oxygen in the tank..they moved him to %40 to see how he would do..so far he seems to be doing fine with it. He is still coughing but they want him to cough to help break up his lungs... His blood work was off which is to be expected with a pup who came in so sick. His ALT was actually in the normal range... they were concerned about his ALB level and Cholestral level which can also indicate a liver issue... and him being so small is also a "sign"... He is showing no HE symptoms so as I told the vets I am not overly concerned right now...as his blood would be off because of how sick he is.. I had my own vet look at all the blood work for a second opinion as I am not a vet even though I read blood work all the time I always go to my vet for any advice... especially when I am working with an ER.... she was not overly concerned with anything.. but wants to re-test him once he is better to see what we are dealing with then... Please keep him in your prayers that the pnemominia clears up and he can reduce the amount of oxygen he needs to breath.. |

hope the little guy recovers real soon - do you think maybe he got kennel cough which lead to pneumonia thus triggering the tracheal cough sounds to me this might have been the case since he is so young maybe came to person with kennel cough and they gave him up as vet bills were high once led to pneumonia - sounds like that is the real story :( and 6 mos is when they get the vaccines so maybe he even got kennel cough from vaccine :( |
He is loosing some protein...but we have not looked more into that right now. We are assuming he had bad kennel cough,as he was tested for lung worms and it came back negative. His trachea is deformed in the chest area....as you move down the neck...it decreases in size and is pushed upwards....we are hoping that once the lungs are cleared and he has gained some muscle mass it will not look as bad as it looks now... I have a dog with MVD too....... |
Yep, he could have a whole myriad of things from LP to renal or liver issues....if he cannot breathe, none of it will matter. Sounds like he is in great hands....with you and the vet...of course I already know that you are good. We go back a long way. :D He is in my prayers. |

CT Hi everyone. I am new to the site and in desperate need of some reassurance. My 10 year old Yorkie, Izzie, was diagnosed yesterday with a collasped trachea. My Izzie only weighs 1lb. 14 oz. Obviously surgery is not an option. She is not responding well to the meds and I know I have to put her down. Y'all seem to have some experience with CT........she is my 4th Yorkie and I haven't had any previous problems. I had her brother (3.5 lbs) and he died last year of congenial heart disease but her heart and lungs are fine. I am devastated. She is on antibiotics, cough suppressant and Temeril-P. My vet said there was another med for this but it only comes in 100mg and he could not calculate the dosage for a dog her size. Any advice is appreciated. |

Tell your vet to read his Vet Therapy book about CT! There are different medication options there that you have not mentioned. One is the use of Lomotil. I have personally had a pup on it and it did help. I also know of two other yorkies who responded well on it. Main things to do: keep him as calm as you can and keep him out of humidity. Alternating cough meds helped with my recent CT boy. We used Torb alternated with Hycodan. Also on bad nights, I had injectable Torb combined with Ace Pro and it really worked! It makes them loopy, but is enough to get that inflammation down so that they can relax and breathe better. Good luck. Honestly, my experience is that in the end it will get them...the heart can only take so much; but you can buy some quality time for them with good medical management. |
Cupid continues to do well..still coughing but the vets are saying it could take 4-6 months for his lungs to fully clear...of course he will be home before then. They reduced the amount of oxygen again...so he is almost breathing on his own....if this keeps up he will be home soon....of course he will still need to recover...but it will be nice to get him to my house. I am so sorry to hear about Izzie..I also lost a pup to a heart problem that was due in part to CT. Please consult with your vet about other medications or go for a second opinion...my Peppy also responded well to medications. Once in awhile he also needed a heavier medication to sleep when his "coughing" was very bad but it helped dramatically. |
