I have to supplement feed. how much?
 

I have LilGuy born Friday Jan 22nd. He is one of 6 in the litter and not gaining weight. I have started to hand feed him and I can't find the EXACT amount he should be having. His birth weight was 2.4 oz then he went up to 2.5 oz and today he was back at 2.4 oz. I know he needs to be fed every 2 hours (mom is doing the diapering) I just need the chart to know how much per feeding?? Thank you all

OK, I NEED more help. now momma will not take care of the baby at all. She is not letting him near her. I have him with me here on a heating pad. Please help:( What to do?

What do you have on hand to supplement with. I used Doe's match It is a powdered formula. I would feed 1cc or until they stopped acting like they were in the nursing mode, Drift off. Sorry I'm no help, Cabella took care of all six of hers. I would hand feed her and put the two smaller puppies on her tit to nurse and stroke her, basically pamper her. I had two that seemed to forget how to suck, and would constantly have to put them on the tit and hold them there until they would start to suck. With six it is very difficult. I got the Doe's match from the vet it is much better than just the goats milk, but if thats all you have on hand its better than nothing.

I am using the goats milk recipe. I took him to my other momma and she had "no problems" diapering him for me:D but I can not use her to feed him as she also just had 6 babies recently.

Thank you, I was able to find the amount he needs to be eating, that helps a ton to make sure he is eating enough and that I am not "over feeding" him also

It's best if mom will nurse him because the first 36 hrs of a puppies life is the critical period nutritionally. Healthy puppies will nurse right away and then every few hours. The pups must nurse from their mother within 12 hours of birth to receive her antibodies against disease. After 12 hours, their stomachs will not absorb antibodies. After this first 12 hours, if the mother does not have enough milk, or if her litter is too large, then the pups' diet can be supplemented

Use goat's milk equally diluted with sterile water. other types of formulas can cause diarrhea and dehydration.

Make sure he is warm before you feed him, feeding a chilled pup will kill it.
Feed in a natural state belly down.
Go by tummy being nice and plump but not overly hard.

There is always the danger of a pup inhaling milk into its lungs and then getting pneumonia. Make sure your nipple hole is not too large or too small. Stick a hot paper clip in the nipple. Hold it upside down - the milk should drip out, but never flow.

The pup may have little bubbles on the side of its lips, but the milk should not run out of the sides of the mouth.

Encourage the pup to nurse by wiggling the nipple across his lips.

Burp puppies after feeding, to reduce any gas they may have.

Use a warn cotton ball to pee and poo after nursing, if mom won't.

If not uncommon for them to lose some weight at first but they should start to gain on the 2nd day,

If mom is refusing him something maybe wrong with him.

Also watch for nose bubbles it may mean a cleft palate

Yorkie Girl 2 Well done!!! I too thought something might be wrong with him if mom is rejecting him all together. I'm sure a trip to the vet is in order. If it's cold where you are. You can put some rice in a sock and heat it in the microwave, just be sure to have several layer between it and the puppy. Good luck and update us on the little guy and mom. Sharon

I have never had to supplement If you have a weak one I just sit with him every feeding to make sure he does not get pushed off. I give him 10 minutes alone on mom before putting the other puppies in with Mom.
