small update 1 Attachment(s) My vet helped to show me everything I need to be doing, I am keeping positive thoughts and, lots of prayers for our Lil Guy. and of course a lot of time. I will just keep working with him and the other momma is diapering him and she thinks he is her lil boy :) I am still trying to get him to latch on because that is best, but having to also hand feed him- he is weak. Here he is next to some of his "new siblings" Attachment 306013 |
This article explains a lot about what is needed to help little ones survive: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm I always do the same as JeanieK but if they can't latch on you have to take immediate action. Sometimes they can't latch on because of a cleft palate or because the mom's teats are too big or the pup is too weak. I have found that the glucose solution really helps to get them going if they are just weak from expending their glucose levels. Sometimes pups are just not fully developed or have internal problems and in those cases there is nothing that can be done to save them. |

I don't care for the little 2 oz puppies give me the 4 ozs and I'm happy. When I had a 2-1/4 oz born in a little of 5 and didn't think it would make it. I used the nutri drops right before feeding if it didn't looked like it didn't want to nurse. I would let one of the bigger pup prime the nipple and then put the tiny one on and hold her up to the nipple while she nursed. I did this every 2 hours for about the first week or two, after that she took off and was able to fine the nipple on her own. I just kept a check on her belly to make sure it was nice and plump. She did make it and when she got older she would whip the fire out of the bigger one. She was so small I didn't get her tail or claws done because I was afraid it would kill her. Here she is at about 1 week up against one of the boys and one of her at 8 weeks |
getting strength I know that we are not even close to being out of the woods yet but, Lil Guy actually woke up on his own (about 5 mins)before his scheduled feeding. :D Then he ate the full amount he was supposed to. |
brendah, that picture of your little guy says it all. You'll likely be hand feeding him (at least on a supplemental basis) until he's old enough to eat. I had a litter back in November that had 1 tiny girl and 3 bigger brothers. I hand fed her for 5 weeks even though i gave her solo time on the teat. She just didn't get enough nursing and i think she used more energy nursing than any benefit she got from it. For a while I thought I might lose her but she slowly took root and started gaining. She's now 8 1/2 weeks, 18 ounces and feisty as can be. |
The poor little guy is so tiny compared to the others. I pray that he makes it. the others gave some great advice. |

Glad to hear you found some help. Blessings ... and prayers. And hoping all will be well and he will gain weight ! XOXO |
Congratulations on getting this far. It seemed pretty touch and go there for a while but any progress is good. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you are going to need alot of strength to get through the next couple of weeks. Looks like you will be having an addition to your family, with all you have and are going through with this little guy, you will be sooooo in love with him you won't be able to part with him!!! LOL Just wanted to give you a little support from VA. Sharon |
 We actually lost this lil guy today. I knew his chances were not good but I tried, Our family already agreed last night that we would "have to" keep Lil Guy. It is amazing how quick they can attach to your heart. It is hard but, I always keep going on the positive and the others are doing really good and have nice fat lil piggy bellies :) Thanks everybody for your advice and support. |
I am so sorry you lost the lil guy. :( Wishing you all the best with his siblings. Please keep us updated on them in the weeks to come. Hugs to you. |

Even when you do everthing right, sometimes you just can't save them. Yes, you do get attached very quickly and it breaks your heart when they don't make it. Glad to hear the others are doing well. It won't be long before you will be showered with sweet puppy breath. |
I am so sorry for the little guy!!! I know you understand that I had no idea of his declining condition this afternoon when I made the post, but it really makes me feel bad that you had to read that. I guess I was thinking you could use a little cheering up. Caring for a little one every two hours is exausting and I knew you had been doing this. But now you and the family can get some rest and enjoy raising those other little babies. Keeping you in thought. Sharon |
