I agree with its potential benefits. I take them myself, as I feel it helps the long term effects from celiac since I was misdiagnosed for soooo long.

Zoey is still on the vet prescribed probiotics and we are awaiting the human grade one you recommend. I thought I would start her after we finish this probiotic - what is your feeling?

sure you can do that no prob as long as getting a probiotic - we are on day 8 and no diarhea and her skin is clearing up as well - I will have her fecal rechecked in a month to make sure gone as well. I am still doubling up the probiotics 2 in am 2 in pm and once she is balanced and off antibiotics I just started then I will after 2 weeks beyond antibiotic i will go to 2 capsules a day. i just want to load her up right now with good bacteria to fight the skin and clostridium - in reading about clostridium it really is not that big of a deal it is just an out of balance bacteria in gut due to antibiotic use mostly so you have to get the good bacteria in there to balance it out once i did that she has been fine. I will NEVER stop probiotics again what a nightmare that was :(

Yes, it does appear terrifying - I am so sorry you both have had to go thru this and not just once but 3 times :(

There is so much to be cognizant of - thank goodness for YT and all the wonderful people here.

Thank you!

Yup, just like raspberry jam in a squeezable bottle! Yuck!

Lady's HGE episodes came out of the blue with no warning. She was put on Cephalexin as part of her treatment.

Scariest thing I ever went through with her. The first two times her packed volume was on the low range for HGE so subq fluids and antibiotics were all she needed. The third (and last) time her packed volume was 90. She was in the hospital for two days. I nearly lost her.

HGE is one disease you cannot take a "wait & see" attitude. Since Yorkies are prone to HGE, everyone needs to be aware of the symptoms. Immediate supportive care can mean the difference between life and death.

Thank you sooo much for the information for both myself and for others - this can be a life saver if ever in the same situation! I hope that you never have to experience this again with your little Lady!

Thank you!

Well, I would not say that Zoey is 100% yet but I am seeing improvement daily. She is done with her antibiotic and still has a few days of the prescribed probiotic and then I will begin the human grade one.

Thank you to all who gave experienced knowledge, information, and support!! I will not be posting in this thread further as I deem her no longer 'sick'. Of course, if this would change - I will let you know.

Thanks Again!!

Why would you switch Zoey to a probiotic formulated for humans?

Dogs have very different digestive systems than we do. I would stick with the probiotic your vet prescribed or another high quality probiotic formulated for dogs. Animal Essentials is a good one.

Actually while I am changing her probiotic, I will finish up the amount prescribed first. I talked to my vet about putting Zoey on a regiment of probiotic and did not discuss the brand - and he said that he did not have any pet patients that are on this - but he was not opposed.

The fact that I decided to try a human grade product is that it was recommended first of all, second - I worry about ANY potentially non human grade product for my pets 'long term', and my limited research on this supports it as well.

You say that their digestive system is different than ours.... is there a difference in ingredients besides the potential 'grade'? I am learning and am open to others experiences.

Thanks!

You can see the difference in the ingredients yourself. Compare the Animal Essentials probiotic (link in my other post) and yours:

Probioplus Dds by U.A.S.Laboratories - UA-1013 - at The Vitamin Shoppe

There are several other excellent probiotics for dogs that others here use. I think Wylie's Mom has recommended another brand in the past.

because human quality alot of the time is better than dog items and this is acidopholus, biffidus and fos nothing else - non-dairy and i have used it for 2 years and it is excellent and a nutritionist for animals recommended it as well - alot of the vet stuff like 3v capsules has a bunch of fillers in it

this is not a straight probiotic like the one i recommended this has enzymes in it as well and I prefer not to supplement enzymes unless necessary as you are supplementing what the pancreas should be doing naturally with this product so I prefer to use a plain probiotics for digestive issues this seems a little over kill for what is going on

dwerten 01-13-2010 01:32 PM

also digestive enzymes are to be taken with food to help digest the food but to properly do probiotics you should give to dog 20-30 min prior to food so it coats the digestive tract protecting it and creating a healthy digestive tract prior to introducing food.
