Rectal Prolapse Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting hoping to get some moral support. I just came back from the emergency vet leaving Magnus who's only 8 weeks old. Finding he had a slight rectal prolapse, I took him to the vet right away and ended up with surgery. He came home with me the same day and was told he should be fine till tomorrow when I bring him back for a check up. Having his dinner, he tried pooping but was still having a hard time and straining. But he did poop and it was very soft. After I gave him the prescribed meds, he pooped again but was straining even harder and was literally flipping out. Thinking it's b/c of the surgery, I thought he would calm down a bit but than I started seeing little bit of blood dripping out and he seemed to be in so much pain that I decided to take him to the emergency vet. They said they'll keep him comfortable until the surgeon takes a look at his bum. His initial check up showed no other issues. He was perfectly happy, energetic, and showed no signs of pain/irritation before this issue which came up on new years eve. Please pray for him. Thanks... |
So sorry ! Are you his breeder? I have no advice but i am boosting ... maybe someone else will see it and have an input on it ! XOXO |
Thanks and no, I'm not his or any type of breeder. He actually came from a very irresponsible breeder and came to us when he was way too young to be taken away from him mom. The vet said rectal prolapse does happen to puppies sometimes and there could be varies causes but heart worms were usually the most common. And so I've started him on his heart worm meds. (The reason I haven't done so is b/c the original vet said not to while he's taking current meds for his prolapse.) He seems to be doing fine right now and just being a brat. :) The ER vet also supplied some pain meds so he'll be on that for the next 3 days. I'd post a picture of him but I haven't read the direction as to how yet but I will soon. He's really adorable and the family just loves him. |
If he is only 8 wks old, it should not be heart worm... he hasn't been around mosquito's! I hope all is well for him. How long have you had him? has he ebeen constipated before the first strain that prolapsed him? Keep us posted.. |
ow long have I had him? The answer will most likely horrify you as I was very upset when I found out how old he was. He was about 4.5 weeks. Long story short, the situation was totally out of my hands and I did try to get the original owner (don't even deserve to be called breeder) to take him back for at least few more weeks. In that short time, it seemed she already sold off rest of his siblings and had no intention of letting him stay with his mama. In any case, I figured he's better off with me in this case. He didn't show any signs of discomfort or constipation before. He was eating/playing/peeing/pooping just fine. Which is why I'm so baffled as to why this happened. Update on his condition: He pooped 3 times. The first two before food, which seemed like he was straining a bit. After his dinner he seemed to be having a easier time and not straining so much. (I mixed his canned food with little more water, I think that help alot) He seems to be panting a little more than usual though. Is that normal? Other than that, I think he's doing ALOT better than he was last night. Although, he's starting to turn into a bit of a spoiled brat since I'm letting him get away with alot more than I usually do. :p (Off topic question: The vet tech mentioned he looked more like a silky than a yorkie. Any thoughts?) |
OMG... you may be right! He may be better off with you!... Is he getting any dry food? I am a firm believer... but what WAS he eating, before you got him? Keep his fluid up, if he is eating give Kro i he's not eating well, keep in mind sugar (k) is constipating Glad to hear of your poop's!! |

I had puppies with constipation problems before, and a baby carrot a day takes care of it. But never prolapsed rectal. It seems that you have figured out a good vet to follow up with you. I also think that at his age it is too soon for heartworm, but again, i would not be a specialist... could he have it before you picked him up??? After what you mentioned about his age, i guess anything would be possible. I wish you the best of luck and blessings, and hoping that was just a phase and it is gone ! Lets pray no more issues! I can sure agree that he is way better off with you than... with his previous supposed care taker. At least you care ! Blessings to you both and happy new year ! XOXO |
I think your puppy is lucky to have you. I hope for only good things for both of you. Good luck and God bless! |
Update: He just went poop for the first time today and was straining alot. I didn't see any signs of blood in his stool but he was having such a hard time it's painful just to watch him. His poop was soft but hard enough to pick up. It wasn't like the 3rd time he went last night where it was little watery. I think that might be why. He's not flipping out from pain though so I think it's somewhat of an improvement? In any case, I will be calling the vet tomorrow and perhaps take him in again. The ER vet mentioned that the sutures might be little too small. I'm currently feeding him Science Diet can food mixed with alot of water. Can anyone suggest something better? I'm sort of force feeding him more water as well. I'm also giving him his meds as prescribed. I don't know how to make it easier for him to poo. -_- And thanks for everyones support. I was bit worried that I'd be getting little bashed for keeping a puppy so young but than again, the situation didn't leave me much choice. In any case, thanks again and I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. |
Sounds like you didn't get the ideal situation age wise, but Magnus is lucky to have you!!!! Hope he continues to improve!!! |
Update: He went poop 2nd time I think after dinner and he seemed to be having a easier time. But still sensitive as he wouldn't let me go anywhere near his bum to wipe off the poo that's hanging. (cotton with warm water) But other than feeling bit worn out, he seemed fine. Playing and being a brat as usual. :) Now... I'm having a bit of an anxiety attack b/c I've been so worried about Magnus. My mind is acting overtime as where I'm waking up to EVERY noise so I'm constantly feeling really tired. I'm worried about tomorrow asking questions like: what time will he poop? is it going to be as painful and straining where he's going to yelp while pooping? Am I feeding him the wrong type of food? Maybe I should've taken him to the vet today... etc etc... It's good that I care for my puppy but I don't want this to get to a point where I'm going to get sick myself. -_- Any emotional advice anyone? This is really starting to take a toll. |
Update: Magnus threw up ALL his food. I added some greenbeans to his regular can food. I called the ER vet and asked what I should do. She said that shouldn't have had effect on it and suggested not feeding him for 12 hours and maybe some blended food like boiled rice/chicken. Any idea why he's throwing up??? It seems like it's only his food. I don't think I see anything else that looks like bile. He also seem to eat fine. |
Wow, I absolutely cannot believe that anyone would let a puppy go so young. Mine are not even weaned at that age. I have ever heard of a prolapsed rectum. Sounds painful. You could try a little dark karyo syrup in his water. But you don't want to make him too loose either. The poor little guy. |

sorry to hear about your pup. I just recently had a problem with vomiting and diarhha. I started the first day with babyfood like gerber chicken look at lables make sure it just chicken and or with vegis like carrots or squash in it only no garlic or onions. I also had some left over gerber rice ceral for babys mixed the 2 together equally. if it seems to thick you can add water to it. I heat this up for 7 sec. in microwave. When mine had hypoglocymia I had to actually finger feed her she wouldnt eat other wise. Not sure what your pup wgt. but I would start out with small spoonfull,(of the mixture) every 3 hrs, and also give a tsp. at night of pumpkin not the pie filler kind 100% pumkin, you can freeze this too. This will help with the poo for both constipation and diarrha. The next day If no vomiting, take that mixture thats left over make some chicken and rice (white easier on tummy) and take the left over mixture and mix it up and try to see if that helps dont forget the pumpkin at night untill everything comes back to normal for a few days you can also try to add some canned dog food too. I would also change from science diet this is not good food. try puppy canned from wellness petco sells this in canned. It has good stuff in it. My Ayla loved it and it got her started to eat again. The wellness puppy kibbles are to big though. Both pups love innova for puppie kibbles. you can try the kibbles wet it down some and take chicken and rice mix it all together then start to go hard and start taken back some of the chicken rice slowly to adjust to the new food. But mine still get a small spoonfull on top of there kibbles most of the time lol they are spoiled, but they'll eat the kibble too. Sorry so long, but its hard to learn what helps bring these pups back to a normal routine most of the vets did not give me any advise on after what to do so learned alot on YT and the hard way and still am as there are not two puppies alike. I also feel your pain as far as the emotional part, I was in shock for alot of it I too got mine to young, (almost died the 2 night, hypo) had no sleep and was going crazy and everyone around me thought I was crazy too. My best advice get a crate if not already have one put it next to you in your bedroom on the night stand and get some zzzzzzzzz set the alarm for ever 3-4 hrs for pee break maybe a little treat and just to see how he is as to make sure he not having a low specialy if he is not holding down food. Hopefully he takes to a crate. Get some nutracal and if he look or is realy tired, depressed, cant stand up well or gums are grey followed by some protien chicken baby food chicken this levels them out. You can give him this to also get him to eat sometime. I still keep this handy just never know with these guys. Its so hard, when they are sick, we love them so much. I'll pray for you and your little guy to both get well. |
Update: After all of vomiting last night, Magnus slept soundly through the night and in the morning, he was back to his bratty self. He wouldn't eat the boiled rice so I gave him little of his can food and he ate that up right away. As far as I could tell, he didn't seem sick or showed any signs of wanting to throw up. Couple hours later, I tried giving him some rice again and he ate a little of it. Afterwards, I gave him half the dose of the pain med and the stool softner. Decided not to give him the Metronidazole after extensive reading about the med. Magnus seemed like he's constipated but I'm not sure if the ring in his bum is too small or if he's really constipated. But he did poo. (I wasn't present when he pooped the first time but was told he pooped and seemed to have a bit of a hard time) He tried pooping again before I left for work. He was straining but didn't seem like he was in any pain like last few times I've seen him go. Only about half an inch of poo came out that was hanging out of his bum. -_-; It'll be cleaned off later. I didn't want to wash his bum again and irritate it. Other than that, he seemed energetic and happy. Kyralayloni: I will definitely take up on your suggestions and is much appreciated. I think I saw wellness at petsmart as well. I'll pick everything up on my way home tonight. Thanks and please keep praying for Magnus. :) |
Our Millie We kept a pup from our second litter that had the same problem. After several trips to the vet we finally got her diet dialed in using about 50%pumpkin. No more straining to go. She is 14 months old now and the problem has gone away now that she has grown up. |
Update: He's gone poo about 3 times today. Straining little less then the previous day and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. Gave him some rice and can food mixed in. He gobbled that up like there no tomorrow. Currently, he's barking up a storm because he wants to play some more. Over all, I think he's doing really well. At least compared to yesterday. *knock on wood* Thank you for all your prayers/support/advice. I think I would've gotten myself really sick from stress myself if not for the supoort. Please keep praying for him till he's fully recovered. |
Update: I took Magnus to the vet earlier tonight just to have a check up. The vet that usually sees him was there and she took the sutures out. Said just keep giving him the med, apply ointment, keep the collar on for about a week and he should be good. When we came home, I gave him his dinner which he practically inhaled, gave him the med and pooped not too long after. I didn't see him actually poop but I didn't hear him make any noise. It usually takes him couple times to get something out but it was pretty quick so I don't think he strained at all. PLUS, I didn't see any poo dangling from his bum so I didn't have to put him through cleaning and irritating it. I'd like to thank everyone for your support and advices. This would've been much harder if I went through it alone. I'll be sure to take some pictures and hopefully, posting them! |
Oh what a great relief for You and Magnus:) |
Final Update: Wasn't sure if this was necessary but I wanted to give a official final update. Took Magnus to the vet today for his 2nd set of shots as well as check up on his prolapse. He did GREAT! Vet said his bum looks like nothing ever happened. And he's in good health over all. He didn't even flinch when they took his temp. (Perhaps he's used to getting violated up his bum.... o_O ROFL) I want to thank everyone for your support. This site and everyone here is a real blessing to many like me. Thanks again. |
Sounds good. I hope he continues to do well. He should. He's got a great mommy.:) |
