baby yorkie has to have eye removed Please pray for my 10 week old yorkie, I gave her to my girlfriend in ATL a week ago everything was going great, then i got a call saying that the puppy had something wrong with her eye. MY girlfrieng took her to the vet, and they said the the puppy had scratched her eye really bad, and it was infected so bad that they could not save her eye. I'm so hurt behind this, I don't know what to do, my girlfrind doesn't have money to pay for babies medical bills, which is going to be around 2000.00 Please pray for me !! Thanks |
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry - that's just terrible :(! Your poor baby. HERE is a link to a thread for possible help for vet bills. Have you talked to the vet about a payment plan or anything? They may be open to that... |
How are things with your baby? So sorry you are going through this during the holidays. Well, any time would be bad. ~Joanne~ |
She is doing a little better, with the help of pain meds. I can't get much done until tomorrow. We are checking with the humane society of ATL. I was told the it would be a a little cheaper, if i went with them to remove the baby's eye. |

I would have, but I gave the puppy to my girlfriend in ATL. She is haveing a hard time coming up with 2000.00 dollors to remove the pups eye. I may end up going to get her, if she doesn't come up with money or help. |

A scratch to the eye that is infected? Is the puppy on antibiotics for the infection? I don't know the whole story behind your puppy, but I think I would look at another opinion on the eye before I opted to have it removed. Either way, I would say time is very important here. |
I am wondering how long your GF has had the puppy and how the eye became so infected that is needs to be removed. Could you have purchased him with a scratched cornea? Was he looked at by your vet when you brougth him home? If he had a scratched cornea when you purchased him wouldn't your contract with the breeder cover the cost of the surgery? If I were you I would contact the breeder that you purchased the puppy from to see if there is any way this would be covered by your contract. |

It is your responsibility as the breeder to pay for the surgery AND vetting of your puppy. This is all part of being a responsible breeder. Furthermore, as a responsible breeder you need to take responsibility for the people that you allow your puppies to be homed to and if your GF does not have the financial capability to properly vet a puppy that she has had for only a week then you need to take her back and do take responsibility for this puppy's life and wellbeing. Also, let me add that if you gave her this puppy at 9 weeks old it was even more irresponsible to allow one of your puppies to leave the litter that early. I read your posts how you asked questions about dew claws and tail docking but truth be told you should have followed the #1 rule of the long standing members that are reputable and never allow a puppy to leave their mothers until at least 12 to 14 weeks old. There was another member who took back a sick puppy that had LS and had the surgery done to save her life. . |
forgot to include the link to your previous posts |
That is weird. Were the puppies vet checked prior to being sent? I don't want to offend you, it is just my girl suffers from EXTREME dry eye due to the absence of tear production in her left eye. She has had ulcers an eye infections in the past, something pretty easy to find by a vet. However, it has NEVER been suggested to me to have her eye removed. Even by the ophthamologist we were referred to. I think I would seek additional care before following this advice. Good Luck. |
I dont know either how an eye could become so infected in 1 week that it needs to be removed. Of course I am no vet either. Just letting you know though. I saw a puppy with an eye infection and had NO clue it had an infected eye. The eyes both looked clear,it was not closing one eye or squinting, nothing oozing out of it either. It was only a vet that checked the eyes under light and saw it had an infection but it took more than a week to know about this infection. Get it to another vet and ask for their opinion. DONT tell them that the other vet suggested the only solution was to remove the eye. Sometimes vets tend to agree with what another vet says. A good honest vet will tell you what he/she would do if it was their dog. Gen |

I am very glad to hear this. Please keep us posted and I hope you can save the eye. |
Thank for your prays. |
I am so sad to havr read your thread. A very young puppy , who is losing an eye in a week's worth time, due to an infection? My only thoughts are that the puppy was not seen by a vet as soon as possible , and things became worse very quickly . At 9 weeks old the puppy should still be with it's littermates and mother. 12weeks old is the ideal age a yorkie puppy can go to a new home. This is what is so upsetting. I know a dog can live fine with one eye. However, the fact is this is a very young pup, which places the pup more in danger. The pup has not even been vaccinated either, which makes things worse . I would not even know how a young pup could of become so severely injured either. All of this is absolutey heartbreaking. What makes me wonder is how much of this was preventable? I hope and pray that this little yorkie baby will be ok and come out of this well. What a shame that it happened . Money should not be a concern right now, giving the best vet care to the pup needs to be number one priority. |

 Yeah something is not right that this pups eye became so infected in a week. Whole thing is very sad. E. |
One of my puppies got his eye scratched by a sibling and it got infected. It does happen pretty quickly but we were able to save his eye and he has no permanent damage to his eye. We did treat him it seems like forever. Is your puppy on antibiotics and antibiotic eye ointment. We also used atropine drops for the first few weeks. After the first day, he was not in any pain but it did take quite awhile for his eye to clear up and it's still got one small area that is a little light colored. I hope your poor puppy doesn't have to lose his eye! |
Thanks for caring, we won't know for sure until she see's a eye doc SAt. morning. I praying that they can save it!! she is on antibiotics and eye ointment for now. |
