HELP W/ Abcess sore on face... Long in Short.... 16 mo 4.5lbs...Tuesday evening i noticed a lump below his eye, took dudley to vet Wed...DX 99% sure of abess tooth, 4th mollar. Although when DR looked in his mouth to see if he can see "puss or infection" there was none. :rolleyes:Gave him injection of antioboics, sent us home w/ 5 day of Clavomax (SP)... TODAY the abcess is bigger, :confused:redder, and now he won't stop rubbing it or against walls, furniture etc, ,to scratch it....is there anything you all suggest for relief that i can give him. Called ER but they said to do NOTHING for abcess??? I put a cold wash cloth on his fac in hopes to help but i don't think it does. Now he holds his eye closed or its swollen??? ANYONE have experience with this? Dr said sore will heal and more than like he will need surgery to remove tooth, but of course can not now b/c of infection, really, how long can this poor thing last with the irritation??? I feel really bad, it heartwreching to watch him and can't help him:mad: THANKS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! |
Sorry you are going through this today. I would take him to the ER vet if only for a second opinion, and since now it seems to be effecting the eye area with the swelling. Better safe than sorry. Hope he feels better soon |
Good heavens! The ER vet said they could do nothing? Tooth abscesses can spread to the jaw bone and other areas of the body. They can become very serious. Sometimes a little sore will appear on the gum which allows the pus to drain, but not always. The fact that your vet didn't see pus means it is not able to drain which is horribly painful. (I just had a root canal as a result of a botched dental procedure that abscessed). |
ER said no, it is draining, the open sore just below his eye that he keeps scratching and rubbing, ,I'm afraid he's making it worse or will open up more, he is on antiboitcs until infection goes down, then will talk surgery...in the meantime i need some relief for him...its pitiful Looking on google for anything i can find...he's eating fine, we really caught this early, IMO, it wasn't there Tue morning and as much petting, rubbing we do i noticed it Tue night after work, so hopefullt he won't experience pain, fingers crossed |
Perhaps your dog is not reacting well to the clavamox, just like people all dogs do not respond the same to all drugs. I really would go to the ER, I would sit there untill they agreed to see me. Quote:

Can you put an E-collar on him so he won't scratch it? You can make a bite not collar yourself with a folded washcloth pinned around his neck. Poor little guy. I feel his pain. Abscessed teeth are awful. |
Ladymom-Love the suggestion, that should help for NOW....PetCo actually has a soft side one that i will buy tomorrow until this is healed completly. For now i still have his plastic one breeder gave me a yr ago when he was neutered...Thanks, i was hoping someone suggested an ontiment, but ER said NOTHING and to keep it dry, maybe dry will heal it up faster... |
I found some information for you: Infections of the 4th Premolar (Carnassial Tooth) in Dogs Your Pet's Best Friend: Carnassial Tooth Abscess |

Instead of cold wash cloth, use a warm cloth. Ruby had an abscess on her neck (brought on from a blood draw). It continued to grow under her skin, until I used warm wash cloth compresses (suggested by the vet). After the warm compresses, the abscess opened up and drained....it was a huge hole by then. I had to keep the wound bandaged, cleaning it daily for it seemed like weeks. It finally did close up, and now she has just a small scarred place that doesn't grow hair much. Anyway, the warm compresses might give him some relief for now. |
I had one with the same thing and they removed the tooth immediately. She was put on antibiotics for 2 days then tooth was extracted and infection cleaned out. It also affected her eye and she has 2 stiches under her eye where the infection was cleaned out. She was then put on antibiotics for 2 weeks. i would think waiting for a prolonged period of time would be more dangerous then removing the tooth right away |
The tooth must be removed asap...I have had several grooming dogs with the same thing...some vets let it go for weeks trying to clear up the abycess...needless suffering. Canine denistry is not the same as human denistry...good luck |
Find a vet that specializes in canine dentistry, and a warm compress a few times daily sounds good to help it drain, the drainage may cause itchiness so keep it clean. Do NOT use peroxide or betadine so close to his eye. Plain warm water should dissolve any drainage. |
Years ago I had a male yorkie who one night yelped and jumped off the bed, when I looked at him there was hole under his eye, I took him right to the vet and they removed the tooth and the one on the other side as the vet said it could happen on the other side as well. The hole healed after the tooth was removed and a week of antibiotics. I would find a vet that will remove the tooth asap as it is really painful for them. Keep us posted. |
get to an board certified dentistry as that is not true about the infection as they will give him an antibiotic shot at time they go under we see a dentist and he is awesome. here is a list of dentists in your area AVDC Diplomates Directory abscessed teeth are hard to find and usually only show up in xrays, sore under eye - they are extremely painful |
this guy is in largo and he has a website. I have to say with my experience the ones that are further into their profession and successful have a website. I went to two dentists and decided on the one we go to now and he had the website seemed more professional had a beautiful facility in a specialty center and came highly recommended by many vets. Do not do the referral just tell him you want to go direct as you read about dentistry on a group as not sure if kick backs but have heard of such as when i called it was cheaper to see dentist if i went direct rather than a referral so i always go direct to a specialist. You can call several vets in area and find out who they recommend for dentistry as well to get a good referral. The Pet Dentist - Testimonials, dog dentist and cat dentist veterniarian |
D- I've been to that facility before, it happens to be my local ER too :) Dr. Peak does have an impressive background and experience... I will more than likely be in touch with them... Dudley hasn't displayed any signs of pain (not that it isn't painful), he eats great and continues chewing on his bone this morning. The sore has subsided and not draining today, today is the 3rd day of the antibotic. From the MANY things i read, now I'm wondering if a root canal or extraction is what he'll need? Would it be best to just remove it? I guess the Dr will know once X-rays are taken....sometimes i wish "google" didn't exisit, i research the heck out of things and then get information overload which leads me to panic mode:eek: |

It will continue to abscess until it is extracted. I would think a root canal would be pretty pricey for a dog. I just spent over $3,000 on a root canal and crown on top. |

They are pricey. I had one done on my oldest girl (maltese) a few years ago, saved the tooth though, and she still has it :) It cost around 450.00 at that time |

Not quite sure why your vet would want to delay the tooth extraction. I think I'd really question that decision. He may have a reason he hasn't explained sufficiently. |
I had the same thing happen years ago with my Myshkha, by then an elderly girl of almost 11. They removed the tooth immidietly, and then cut the abcess to drain it. This was the only dental work she ever had done in her life, and still had all but a few incisors. |
I've not had any experience with this particular problem but I know for helping drainage, you should use warm compresses. Try and make it as warm as you can. I wished I lived closer to you, I could send you a collar but it would take a few days. I hope the ER vet can help you with this. I would think that an ER facility would have someone they can contact for something like this. |
A big misconception is the think a dog reacts to pain as we humans...there is not way a human could ignore an abcessed tooth..eat and act like nothing is wrong...dogs will..but I cannot being to count the times people have told me their adult dog turned back into a playful puppy once they had a dental done.. I would not do a root canal...dogs so well with missing teeth... |

Wow..."do nothing??!!" -- for an abscess? You've received some great advice...I hope your kiddo will soon be feeling better and better :). |
sorry to hear you are dealing with this... my guy had the same thing a few months ago... however, we removed the tooth right away, that way the vet was able to clean out the infection from the inside and after that it cleaned up in no time... in the meantime try putting a warm cloth on the wound, that helped my guy feel better! |
