sasha issue w/ scintigraphy
 
ok so the place where the scintigraphy is done raised their prices from $395 to $495 as of December 1, 2009. Therefore, I cannot get the procedure done. Maybe within the next few months when I have money Ican do it. As of now, I am just going to let the leaves fall where they may. She looks great on meds and L/D food so Im going to stick with that. I am not going to take her to a rescue so that she can have surgery or get the procedure. So please do not suggest that. I am also not going to give her up to someone who can afford the procedures. I am keeping my baby and that's that. She looks fantastic and hopefully she will stay that way. Her energy level has been at it's highest for the past 3 months so I am hoping it stays.

I am sorry that you are in this position. I am not sure what a scintigraphy is but can you reason with the place where you need to get it done and tell them that when you realized that you needed this procedure you were given one price and you had budgeted that. Most human doctors offices will work with patients if you speak with them. I would think that it worth a try to see if they will work with you if you need this done. Best of luck.

Sasha is set for her scintigraphy on march 12. her BAT pre was 68.7 and post 269.8. Does anyone think that it could be an operable shunt? what is the possibility that it wouldn't be operable.?

My Lola was just over a year when I had her BAT done. They were pre 43 & post 237. I was very fortunate that I could take her to Dr Tobias at UT. When Dr Tobias first saw her she told me that Lola looked like a liver shunt baby because of her coat. She was also a very picky eater and had a very small stature. I thought she was just a very quiet little Yorkie because she had become more and more docile. She never showed any obvious signs of liver shunt such as seizures or head pressing, drooling, etc., but I just knew something was not right. They did the scintigraphy and it did show a large shunt. Dr Tobias put the ring around it, I brought Lola home 2 days later and it has been the best thing we could have done for her. She now runs and plays and acts like a puppy is supposed to. I wish you luck with your baby...I know how hard this is and how expensive it gets. If it is what she needs, and it sounds like it is, you will not regret doing it...it will greatly improve your baby's quality of life!

Wow I'm happy for you both! Sasha's coat is a little icky. do you have any before LS surgery and after LS surgery pictures of how she looked? Did her coat change after surgery?

Unfortunately, I don't take a lot of pictures....I will tell you her coat used to not grow much at all, but now it is almost down to the floor on the sides. It wll never look super full and thick like pictures of of some of the show yorkies that we see, but it is growing and is much longer and thicker than it used to be. She now looks like any "normal" yorkie you might see! I have to brush her each day to keep her from getting tangled, but she loves to go out and chase the squirrels and birds through the bushes with her brother - she has turned into a real "tomboy" since her surgery almost 1 year ago! I was told the toxins in her body prior to having the shunt repaired were causing her coat to look bad and grow poorly...I guess that was true!

I will pray that your refusal to do what vets have suggested out of a stated love for her, will not result in pain for your Sasha. One day I hope that laws will be passed that protect puppies the same way human children are protected.

I admire your desire to want to stick with it, but I am merely saying that I hope it is not at Sasha's expense. She very well may be just fine, but I would be remiss if I did not voice my opinion about this. I am an advocate for the pups and owe it to them....they don't have voices or choices.

I think due to her age it is operable if you let it go it can blow out to multiples and will be inoperable

Her earlier post about cost was posted in December. It looks from her recent post - that she has scheduled the scintigraphy for March so this is great news!

It sounds like she's scheduled the scintigraphy for March 12th to me. I hope that's the case.

Oh, I did not see the date differences. Yes, I hope she is getting this done as well; but, what concerns me is what if Sasha needs surgery? If it took since December to raise the $100, is she going to be able to get the surgery done?

Sasha is in my prayers.

I'm sorry but your comments are unnecessary.
1. In Dec. I didn't have money, nor did my parents
2. I'm 17 and don't have a job. no ones hiring
3. Why would I get a scintigraphy if my intensions were to not have the surgery done?
4. IT didn't take a few months 2 raise 100 dollars, my parents just needed a chance to catch up on their bills.
5. I have already have a plan so Sasha. If there is an operable shunt, dad is going to save money by summertime and he and I go to UT. Of course when I personally have the money, I will pay him back.

Please don't judge me before you know all the facts. Sasha is in very good hands and extremely spoiled

Thanks for being nice and supportive and not rude. In the past fews days I have been getting a lot of rude comments about Sasha when they don't have all the facts. I'm scared for Sasha though:(

Please look at the dates when posted. In Dec., I couldn't get scin. done but now I can.

Sashabear, I think you will do the right thing by your Sasha, though you are just a young girl.

I pray you will get good news for your little one.

My Lucy has MVD but with BAT numbers low enough that no further testing was recommended . .so I got lucky for now.

I am not judging you. I am simply stating things that I believe to be true and I find nothing that I said to be unnecessary....it is just not what you wish to hear. Sometimes the truth is a rough pill to swallow.

Clearly it did take a few months...even longer to get money together for the scintigraphy. I recall the original post about Sasha. :) She has been needing this for some time. :)

I am going to suggest ONE thing to you. IF you are advised that Sasha needs to have surgery, ask the implications if you put it off until summer. And, perhaps it will be good to give an exact month since summer lasts for a few months.

I do admire you for wanting to take the best care of Sasha ... I just would be remiss if I did not voice concerns. I do hope that it all goes well for her. :)

I will continue to pray for Sasha.

I find it unnecessary because it doesn't concern me. Sasha is being cared for. 5 people live in this house, all of whom love her and are trying to get her the care she needs. I have four dogs so the vet bills can get pretty high. We are doing better financially right now then we were in December. Plus at that time, my parents were helping to pay off the cost of my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary, which was HUGE and very costly.My parents and I have talked it over and they said they are going to do what needs to be done for Sasha. Thank you very much for your prayers. Sasha needs them.

She has had a handful of days where she was lethargic and spacey. No seizures though. Do any of your yorkies have LS?

mine has mvd but there was a concern of shunt so vet wanted me to go see dr broom in your area for scintigraphy but my girls numbers were below 100 so did not do it

Sasha had her scintigraphy done today. It definitely looks like a shunt. I guess Dr. Broome doesn't diagnose patients. It says that her shunt fraction is 87%

glad she had it done how is she doing? Can you send that to dr tobias and get her take on it? I heard dr broome is very good how did you like him and his facility?

She is doing great. She's being really playful. I never even saw Dr. Broome. How could I send it to Dr. Tobias? Could you help me? His facility is very, very nice.

glad to know his place is nice - did you have done at the tustin facility or los angeles?

Did they give you the scintigraphy on a cd or a paper write up? I would call dr tobias at ut and ask her how to get it to her and maybe he can even email it to her as i think you were going to go to her for surgery so just let her know that and I am sure she will help you

They gave me a CD with pictures of the scintigraphy and a graph of her shunt fraction. Would Dr. Tobias answer my phone calls. Do you know Ronlynns YT page?

i definitely think dr tobias or her assistant will talk to you and maybe you can have dr broome make a copy of info and send to dr tobias - just let her know your plans to go there if it is a shunt
