4 seizures so far.Tests in hospital tomorrow My worst nightmare has come true. Roxy is having seizures. The very 1st ones were in May when she stayed with my sister in law. They said she had five. Rushed her to the hospital kept her for observations and she never had another one after that. I thought Roxy got into her plants or something. Last night at 9:30pm out of nowhere Roxy had a seizure. I have never seen anything like it. I thought she was dying! Her whole body was stiff and shaking uncontrolably. A lot of foam came out of her mouth. The worst part was when it stopped- she didn't know us, her eyes were all glazed over. She looked like she was another dog. Then, she was fine, but very tired. Her next one was at 4:30am neddless to say we didn't sleep. Her 3rd one was at 9:00am today(Oct 6) I rushed her to the vet. They gave her a perscription for valium and scheduled her for hospitalization, Bile Acid, bllod work and urinalysis. They couldn't do it today because she has to fast. Her 4th seizure was at about 12:00pm. This was the WORST one. Her mouth was wide open and she was flipping all over. I picked her up to calm her and she urinated all over. I rushed her to the vet again. I refused to take to the hospital over night because I know I would never be able to afford it. It's almost 3:00pm and no more seizures yet. I can't leave her side. I need a shower from the pee bath!! Please keep Roxy in your prayers. My family is sick over this. She is our only little girl!!(I have 3 boys) I hope she doesn't have liver shunt. I can't even contact who I bought her from. She moved back south because her husband passed away. Roxy's mom- Maria |
I'm soooo sorry for your little girl Roxy. I will keep her and you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope it's nothing serious. :( |
OM... I hope you get some news soon, I know the unknowing it awful. Hopefully it will be ok,something they can control. You and Roxy are in my thoughts. Keep us posted. |
Thanks, I have been glued to this website, but I think I have information overload now. I am so scared, there seems to be so much that could be wrong. I'm just going to keep good thoughts in my head. Roxy girl's mom- Maria |
Maria...I'm so so sorry to hear this ...I hope your baby is going to be ok and just said a little prayer for her. This is really scary.....try to think positive thoughts and you have lots of people here to talk to if you need to ...most of us all will pm you or talk on the site. Hang in there and I hope they find the cause of the seizures and hope they can treat this...Good luck and best wishes...xoxo So sorry. |
Maria, I'm so sorry this has happened and sorry for her to have to go through all of this. I just hope they can "fix her up" so she can be healthy again. |
How old is Roxy? Is she an older dog, or just a pup? |
I am so sorry to hear that Roxy has been having seizures...I know this is such a hard time for you because I can remember when this happened to my Miko not that long ago. It's very scary to see. Continue to pray for your little one and she'll be in our thoughts and prayers too. Keep us posted on her progress and test results. |
Roxy was born on December 14, 2004. She is 9 months old. Thanks again for all of the support. My husband and I will probably have another sleepless night. I just hope my youngest son (9 years old) doesn't witness a seizure. My older sons (17 and 19) did see it, and they were freaked out. I will be on and off. So any suggestions are welcome! |
Oh my, I hope its nothing serious.. I'll be thinking of you. |
I feel so bad for her. I have seizures so I can say that I know what she is going thru. When she has one, stay calm and put her on something flat to help her stay more comfortable. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers...Bless you. |
update on Roxy 7:00pm- Roxy had her 5th seizure since 9:30pm last night. I sent my 9 year old to his room so he wouldn't see it. She had her worst one yet. This time her legs were in motion so it was hard to comfort her. She was also biting the air and she urinated and foamed again. This time she wasn't calm after, she ran around the house like she was afraid of us. This is the worst. I can't believe it is happening. I hope we make it through this night. Roxy's Mom Maria :( |
Maria...I feel so bad for what your going through. I went through the identical thing with a Bassett Hound I had years back and just reading your post made me relive those horrible days all over again. You will be in my thoughts and I pray you have a happier ending than what we did. |
did your vet by chance give you any special food to feed her until the test results are in? If they are testing for Shunt, she should be on a low protien diet until they find out for sure. |
No, my vet did not say anything about special food. I made her scrambled eggs and mixed it with her Royal Canin puppy food. She ate the whole bowl, that was at 4:30. The vet gave Roxy valium. She was in terrible shape from that medicine. She bumped into everything, couldn't jump up or down on the couch, and pee peed in the house. Gave her 10mg at 2:00pm. But, at 7:00pm she had another seizure. I can't give the meds to her again until 10:00pm. Roxy's testing appointment is for 7:45am tomorrow. She can't have anything to eat after 8:00pm, so how am I supposed to give her the meds at 10:00pm? Do you think I should give her the valium at 8:00pm? I think I might call the vet. Roxy's mom- Maria |
Call your vet and ask what time the test will be. For the Bile acid test is is a 12 hour fast, draw the blood, then feed them and wait 2 hours before drawing the blood again. Her symptoms do sound like some of those that are known for Liver shunt, but then there are a lot of other problems that have the same symptoms too. I just hope that she does not keep having seziures and hurt herself before they find the problem. My prayers are with you, and Roxy over this. |
Thanks for your help. I will call the vet. You think it sounds like she has a shunt? I hope not. I feel the same way as you though, I hope she doesn't hurt herself. It's the scariest thing. It feels like I am in a bad dream. I am so glad I have Yorkie Talk to vent to. People that aren't animal lovers don't understand the pain is the same as it is for a human that is sick. I am very thankful for all of the caring people here! I will keep posting throught the night. It helps me keep it together. Roxy's mom  Maria |
I wouldn't venture to guess what it could be, there are so many things that have similar symptoms, and until the vet does the tests there is no way of knowing for sure. |
Maria, I'm sorry to hear your going through this with your baby and I hope they find out what is causing them. The little dog scooter I had did the same thing and they are terrible to see. You feel so helpless and yes they go throught not knowing where they are at or who you are. His were so severe he was having them every hour to every two hours. I thought for sure he was going to die or be brain damaged but he wasn't. The only thing to watch out for is if they don't come out of the seizure, that can kill them. The vet start him on Phenobarbital that didn't stop them and he had to add Potassium bromide. I also changed his dog food from royal caine to puppy chow. His seizures stopped. I think you said you were feeing your the royal caine and it also make me wonder if this is some kind of reaction to the food as well. It took about 3-4 day after I stopped feeding the royal canie for the seizure to stop. The vet said scooters were unknown but he also said it could have been from the breeder, breeding a half brother/half sister together too. So, I never found out the cause. Here is a website that you may find quite a bit of information on seizures..there is a Dr.Dodd that is studying seizures you may want to see if you vet will get in touch with her. 6th seizure Roxy had another seizure at 9:15pm. This is getting to be too much for me. I called the vet right before she had it at 8:30 and they said it would be OK to give her the valium before she was due at 10pm. I stopped feeding her then for her fast. I don't understand why the valium didn't help. I think I might call the emergency hospital. I just don't think I can afford it. Tommorws tests come to $250.00. I can't imagine how much an emergency hospital is. Plus, if God forbid, she needs liver shunt surgery. I have so many emotions going through me. Roxy's Mom, Maria  :(  |
Thank you, Sherry. Is scooter still around? Did the seizures stop altogether with the meds? Maria |
As far as I know he is seizure free. Scooter was 5 1/2 month old when I got him..I bought him for a breeder. I had him 2 month when the seizures started. I spent 500 to get him lined out and then placed him with a DR. and his wife who is a nurse. The royal canine food has me wondering, because that was what Scooter was on too. And the seizures stopped when I took him off it. I change him to puppy chow. So I don\'t know if it was the meds or stopping the food too that helped. The valium never seem to help or stop the seizure. His liver test came out fine no liver shunt...Sherry |
Roxy had her first seizures when she was four months old. She was staying with my sister in law. She was not eating Royal Canin at that time, so I do not think it is the food. Also, she has been eating that food for a while now and the first time I ever saw her have a seizure was last night. I will mention it to the vet tomorrow though. If there is any chance that the food causes it, I will change her food. |
7th seizure Roxy had her 7th seizure at 10:40pm. Called the emergency hospital. No way I can afford to take her there and have the tests done tommorrow. I wish the seizures would just stop! :( |
I\'m so sorry they have continued. It is awful to watch and feel totally helpless. I hope the rest of your night isn\'t as bad. |
I am so sorry to hear about your dog. My little chihuahua had one seizure a few weeks ago, and I\'m still not over it. It totally freaked me out. I thought she was going to die. I\'ll be keeping the both of you in my thoughts and prayers and hope you find out what\'s causing them. Bless your hearts. |
I am so sorry about what you are going through...I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers! |
:boy_hug: OMG! What an ordeal. I hope this comes to an end soon for both you and your baby with the best possible outcome for you both. |
Im so sorry to hear about your babie. It must be so hard on both of you. I will keep your babie in my prayers. |
