7 hours after Brodie's surgery began I finally got a call about my pup. He had a very big day... they performed a cystonomy to remove a large and small urate stone from his bladder and did a liver biopsy. Following this they checked Brodies liver shunt. They "closed" the shunt and Brodie immediately went into portal hypertension (within 10 seconds). It was determined that ligation was not an option for Brodie - even partial. Since his symptom from the shunt is production of urate stones they went ahead and performed a scrotal urethrostomy. Brodie was initially having trouble breathing on his own postoperatively, but is now doing so just fine. He is going to be monitored at Cornell and should be able to come home sometime this weekend. He will have to remain on LD Diet with low protein snacks and may have to go on medication as well to medically manage his condition as they couldn't "fix" it. I am so relieved my little one is okay and coming home soon! |
Thank you for the update! What a long day you had. I am so happy for you that Brodie is out of surgery and ok! :) I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. |
Glad surgery is over and he came out well:) Sending more good recovery thoughts your way! I bet he can't wait to get home!:D |
Ahhh yeah lil Brodie, so glad surgery went well for him....Now onto recovery:) I wish you well |
I'm so glad that he came out of his surgery! I know this is not the news you wanted to hear but I'm hopeful that you will be able to medically manage the rest of his symptoms. |
Wow! I am so glad you took Brodie to Cornell for the surgery, aren't you? Hopefully he won't get blocked anymore and you can manage his symptoms with diet and medication. |
:woof: I'm so glad to hear he is out of surgery and doing well. I hope it is a downhill ride from here and that Brodie recovers very quickly. He sure is lucky to have you! I know this has been tough on you, I hope you can relax a little bit tonight. Please keep us posted on his recovery. We'll keep him in our prayers. |
I'm glad that Brodie made it through his very long day of surgery. It sounds like he is a little fighter. I hope the procedure they performed will improve things for him along with the diet/medications to manage the shunt. I'm sorry ligation was not an option but at least something could be done for Brodie. I bet you will be happy when you get him home! |
Wow! At least he should be more comfortable and not be getting blocked anymore! Tell him we love him too and hope he feels better real soon when you see him! Hugs and Kissies, |
The vets at Cornell have called me morning and night the last few days to give me updates on little Brodie. They say he is doing amazingly well and is healing perfectly. He eagerly eats and is trying to play! I get to pick him up tomorrow afternoon and bring him home :) :) I can't wait! thank you everyone for all of your support throughout Brodie's ordeal. You have all saved my sanity! |
Oh, that is just wonderful that he is coming home tomorrow! I know he will be happy to see you, too! :) |
Great news! I can just imagine how anxious you must feel to hold and love on Brodie. It is wonderful to read such good news. |
Oh..Yeah! You'll have to post a ton of pics.... so happy for you!:D |
Just checking in to see how Brodie's doing....:) |
:aimeeyork Thinking of Brodie. |
hi everyone! A Brodie update - he is home and somewhat comfortable. His incisions appear to be healing well!! He is no longer urinating out of his penis and appears comfortable with this! I can't say he is a huge fan of having a cone on his head... nor does he like that he has to stay in his cage or a tiny area. Brodie likes to sleep with his Mommy and sit on the couch - soon enough! I'm so glad he is home and not in pain. His congestion has gone away as well. He has been a tough little guy and appears to be having no complications. :) Since his surgery he has also been eating like a little piggy! Easily twice what he usually eats and rather ravenously!! I'm not sure why this is as they couldn't fix his shunt... but he could use to gain some weight! |
posted some more pics of Brodie to share with you all :) |
I am so happy to hear that Brodie is doing so well! He is an adorable pupster! I loved the pic of him in bed!! :D |
OMG! That is great...so glad he's feeling so much better.... Loved all the pics... what a little Momma's boy.... the look in his eyes... he loves his Mommie! He's eating better bc he's feeling better... stones are painful, at the least very uncomfortable. When any system fails to function the body can't clear out the toxins, and that makes one not feel so good... hence poor appetite. When all that gets corrected and body is functioning better and pain is eliminated, appetite returns. Is he on medications for the Liver shunt? I'm really so glad he's home with you. What an ordeal this ended up being! Give him extra hugs and kissies from us... Kathy:D |
Wow! What you and Brody have been through. I just read through this entire thread - having not seen it earlier. Wow - what a road you have been on. You are a very strong person and Brody is very very lucky to have you. I found it interesting that the person in the beginning of the thread knew exactly what she was talking about (I see that she's banned now) but her execution, providing you with the direction you needed to take, was quite pushy. Its amazing how so many people on here - just from the information you have given - were more knowledgable than your own vet. I have found that when it comes to yorkies - and you need information - it is better to come on here and ask your question - rather than ask your vet. You have a greater knowledge here than anywhere else. AMAZING!! Anyway, Fellow Long Islander, I'm glad your story had a happy ending and I wish your road ahead is nothing but healthy and happy. |
Great news, thanks for the update. I hope it's smooth sailing ahead for you and Brodie. He is one lucky little dog that you love him so much. I know it hasn't been easy on you, or him. |
