I am so glad Brodie is feeling better! He will get wonderful care at Cornell. Dr. Center has an amazing reputation. It makes no sense to try to get him to U of Tennessee with Cornell so close to you. |

For anyone that has been reading this and also suffering with a sick puppy... I found this site which explains a lot about shunt surgery and your dogs life expectancy after :) It looks really good if they can get the shunt to close! ACVIM |

Good luck on Wednesday. Many people pulling for Brodie and you. |
So glad they got you in sooner... keeping you both in my prayers... |
Brodie and I both want to send our thanks! This is such a stressful time! |
Just checking in for an update... |
His CT got pushed back to today because of an emergency that required all of the anesthesiologists. Brodie and I got to spend the night together and are getting ready to check in again today. |

Me, too. |
Hi guys! Sorry it took so long, but they didn't discharge Brodie until 2pm and we had to drive back! They did a Protein C test and his results were 44%. This is far from ideal, but they said typical of a shunt dog. After his CT scan it showed a single external shunt connecting the vena cava to the portal artery. They said they will try to ligate complete and about 50% of dogs with Brodie's Protein C are able to have a complete ligation but if pressure it too high then they will do a partial ligation to what he can handle. I can't say enough great things about Cornell. ALL of the staff treated Brodie and I extremely well and made us feel very comfortable. Your pet is assigned a 4th year as well as a resident which see him through the entire process. The two guys I am working with are incredible. I really couldn't have asked them for anymore. Brodie's surgery is going to hopefully be sometime in the last 2 weeks of August. I will keep everyone updated!! |

Aren't vet schools wonderful? I love the fact that your pet gets an entire team who stay with them during the whole process. |
I'm so glad you got definitive news about Brodie and you seem really pleased with the care he received. That means so much. Please keep us posted and you will be in our thoughts. |
So glad to hear you have a definitive diagnosis and that Brodie will be well soon. I know this has been tough on you and for you. I'm glad you've hung in there and done everything you could for Brodie. It speaks of your love for him. He's a lucky little puppy. |
So glad to hear you got a diagnosis! And that it is operable! Yay! Sounds too like you had a wonderful experience at Cornell. Very glad all went well. I'll be keeping you both in my prayers...:D |
So frustrated... Bad news - Brodie has an underdeveloped portal vein so they may not be able to ligate the shunt at all. They said if they can't they will perform a scrotal urethrostomy so that he is able to pass the stones that he makes. Brodie currently has a stone that was in his urethra. It was moving like a ballbearing but today it blocked him. I had to bring him to his local vet to have a catheter put in to push the stone back into the bladder. Unfortunately Cornell has been insanely busy and they can't fit Brodie in until Sept 15th. My local vet is concerned that the stone is going to block his urethra again - and so am I. This is so frustrating for Brodie and I both. I just wish I could make him healthy :( |
Oh, you poor things. I hope they can make things better for Brodie. |
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this news. Poor little guy. Does Cornell know he became blocked today? Maybe he'll get moved up on their list... Keeping you both in my prayers... |

Oh gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. We all know you\'ve tried your hardest to get him healthy. Hang in there. With your persistence and love, I am sure you will get him there. I just feel so bad for you right now, I am sure this was a heartbreaking and depressing setback. I know you just want him to feel good and get past all these procedures. Brodie and you will be in my thoughts, you are such a good dog mommy to Brodie. |
Well that\'s good! Just keep in mind how bored you\'ll be when all is done! :D Keeping our fingers and paws crossed for ya! |
Brodie got an appointment for tomorrow! I am so scared I will lose my baby :( I feel like vomiting. As much as I want to have this surgery, I don\'t want to lose my puppy! Please pray everything goes well and they are able to make him better. I won\'t even know what surgery is performed until all is done :( UGH. |
