Wanted to update everyone about Lola. She has not had a normal stool since June or July she has been on several meds and presc. dog food but nothing seemed to work. I found an incredible vet by the name of Dr Hawthorne who will be treating her for Lymphangiectasia. She is on Metro 2 times a day and Predrisolone once a day for 10 days. She is on the same diet for 10 days then if this is not working we will switch to lean ground turkey and white rice. I did try white rice today and she ate so far with no runny stool. I hope this helps. Any suggestions on zero fat high protein diet? Her blood levels are normal and she does not have a swollen abdomen. Thanks for your support.

Sorry to hear about Lola. I would be very careful with the white rice as it is difficult to digest this and her digestive system needs very easy to digest foods with this disease. Is she on a probiotic and dietary enzymes? I would recommend a consult with Susan Davis for a diet that is non-fat, but with quality easy to digest protein and a look at some of her supplements as these can really help the inflammation and heal the GI tract. Glad you found a vet you like as well.

I know Doc Hawthorne has always recommended the white rice and chicken....not sure about the turkey........Not sure about the high protien diet, but if doc has recommended that....and he's on the Board with Dr Centers, he's more knowledgable about the liver function in a yorkie and knows what is the best for her diet. I'd be more apt to stick with Dr. Hawthorne's recommendations.

I am so exicited that Dr Hawthorne is our Doc. He sent me a personal card with his number if I needed him. Thanks so much Mary for recomending him to us. We see him in 10 days with Lola and Monday with XUXA for her Spay...Yes he did recomend white rice. So far she has not had an episode. YEA....Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are all so Blessed....

I'm glad you're pleased with him. I hate that I'm here and only get to see him once or twice a year when I get back there. He's one in a million.

If he recommended white rice, then stick with it. He's never steared me wrong, always has been 100% in his diagnosis and I trust him implicitly.

On the lighter side, I remember my very first show dog. I took her in to have her baby teeth pulled. When he brought her out and handed her to me, told me that her hysterectomy went very well and to keep her calm for the next few days. My face went white, I started stammering and he began laughing.....He knew she was just about to start her show career and I mine.....just wanted to see what I'd do.

I never thought I would be celebrating about a BM but Lola had her first Almost normal Bm today. She had no runny stool yesterday and today it did not look like a cow patty...Sorry for being graphic, I am just so happy. I love my Vet.....

Just out of curiosity, how did he come to this diagnosis with good bloodwork and no biopsy?

So, glad Doc's treatment is taking affect. I've never known him to misdiagnose. His years of working with yorkies and Dr Centers has made him one of the top vets in the DFW Metroplex. I love the fact that he always treats aggressively and doesn't waste time.....hemming and hawing. The best part is that he never makes a pet owner feel like an idiot.

He has seen so many Yorkie cases and has studied their diseases and has worked with and sits on the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners with Dr Center. Biopsy will be done after 10 days if this is not working. So far I see such an improvement. Runny stool or Diarrhea is a common sign of this disease. Blood test may show low blood protein levels but not always. This is a common disease for Yorkies and they lose protein. They need zero fat and high quality protein. This is a slow process to figure out what she can and cant eat. This week plain rice next week throw in lean ground turkey if that works then may green beans for a week. So far so good. I hope this thread will help someone who is having the same symptoms my Lola has.

Hi! So glad you are getting closer to getting this problem resolved. It can be a result of a congenital malformation of the lymphatics, and a few other problems... keep us posted... so glad you are happy with your vet. :D

In speaking to Dr Hawthorne there are 3 syndromes that it can be the result of. Studies are being conducted at this time and it has not been determined whether all syndromes or if any are congenital....or heriditary..........If caught early enough it is treatable.

Some vets misdiagnose as blood tests will point to pancreatitis.

As of tonight we have had ZERO runny stools. As a matter of fact she only had one today and it was formed and semi hard. I am so pleased. Will see the Dr tomorrow and let him know her progress.

Out of the Blue she had this diarrhea that never went away until a week ago. That was her only sign.
