You caught her in time. I just had a call from a girlfriend, who also uses Dr. Hawthorne and her girl lost the battle with it yesterday morning. She was 7 years old.

Oh Mary, I am so sorry. When I saw her weight drop that scared me. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks so much Cindy. She seems to be better but I just have to keep her on this diet.

Wanted to give everyone an update on my Lola. She is doing great. She has one BM a day and it semi hard. After a week on the rice we then added no fat ground turkey to the rice and she did great. I just started adding peas to the rice and turkey and she seems to be fine. Also baked her a sweet potato and it seems to agree with her system. She is still on Metro but only once a day. This disease can be controlled by her diet. Also introducing different foods one at a time to make sure they agree with her system.

I am so glad that he is doing so well on the new diet. Isn't it wonderful when you find a vet that you can trust wholeheartedly! :thumbup:

this is so wild as i was going to post a thread for this and i see it here already. I took my dee dee to vet today for a swollen vulva :( she keeps licking at it so we did urinalysis and culture to lab by a free catch. I told him dd is having bouts of diarhea off and on and it is greasy like yet her blood work was totally normal in July and feb as she is gets blood work twice a year since on temarilp for allergies and he brought this up and said it runs in the breed. I told him is that the same as EPI and he said NO it is different as it is tied to the fats, etc but it runs in this breed for mid life yorkies and dee dee is 5 1/2 so he mentioned if she starts to get worse with loose stools to keep an eye on it - I thought it was still from metacam incident back in february and he said NO that was way too long ago and dogs with allergies tend to have ibd and this is tied to ibd but it is mainly diagnosed with lower proteins in the blood is when they notice it is happening but it is very common in yorkies. I have to read the thread but i thought i would post real quick what i learned today about this :(

our vet told me today hydrolized diets and steroids are used in severe cases and dee dee is on a hydrolized diet purina ha which is low protein as she has mvd :( and she is on temarilp for allergies so may be why it is not showing up on blood work. He told me if we see her protein levels drop then this could be an issue but her protein levels are fine on all her blood work. Just curious are the stools colitis looking and some greasy looking? I was going to have tli done next blood work up - she has not symptoms other than off and on diarhea and i thought it was the probiotics as that was not stopping it which it usually does so why i was so stumped - and it is a stinky stool too - just curious as after vet mentioned this i need to learn more about it as he said to keep an eye on her stools and if they get worse let him know and now i will pay close attention to protein on her blood work and i will go back and check to see if it has dropped at all as well

I asked vet if this had to be supplemented with enzymes and he said it is not epi it is different and tied to fats more than anything i am reading up on it more though

You are correct my vet just said this runs in yorkies alot but he said the low protein on blood work is the indicator but it happens with dogs with ibd issues so sounds like your dog has ibd to me and he is treating same as ibd dog as grains and steroids are used in ibd dogs as well so may be trying to prevent your dog from getting this disease by treating the ibd aggressively it sounds to me

I know Lisette is following Dr Hawthorne's instructions to the T, contributing to her girl's improvement. He is so knowledgable in the Yorkshire Terrier, it just amazes me. He owns one of my mentor's yorkies, and is the vet of most yorkie exhibitor/breeders in Dallas. I still make calls to him for advice. A wonderful vet that sits on the Board on Vetenarians, works with Dr Centers. I can't speak too highly of him. An added plus.....he does all the dental work on the dogs that see him. Yep! no vet tech, says your paying vet fees, you get a vet to do the job, my techs are here to assist me, not to do my work.

have to disagree on this as this is determined by low protein on blood work which is different than pancreatitis. I think what you are referring epi not pancreatitis. Epi is determined by TLI blood test for pancreas which has to do with pancreatic enzymes. cpli is what is tested for pancreatitis. Two different things. This disease Lymphangiectasia Is tied more to lower protein on blood work - the things for pancreatitis are high white blood cell count, amylase and lipase are elevated, triglycerides are high which i would think since triglycerides are fat content in blood would also be affected by this disease as well, and cpli test high for pancreatitis. Low protein does not come up in a pancreatitis dog. I have went through a severe bout of pancreatitis and his protein was never off. He only had vomitting though with the disease not diarhea which could be why.
