You're so welcome! I just know how much of a huge help it was to read about other's experiences and know what to expect. If there's anything I can help with or answer before the surgery let me know :) And I'll be there for encouragement and advice once the surgery happens so you'll have plenty of help, try not to worry too much! :)

How much moving is too much?

Moose had a pretty good day yesterday! He went outside to potty and walked a few steps. :thumbup:You could just see the urge to take off and run in his eyes haha.

But this morning is the very first time since the surgery that I couldn't get him to eat breakfast and he had diarheaa :( Not sure if it could be from the Tamadol? He's been taking small doses of it since Monday night.

He was walking a few steps on the porch this morning, and then had the bout of diarheaa, and then right after that he seemed to be in a lot of pain with his legs. He was shaking a little and then stretched out both back legs straight while he was standing up. Like he used to do before the LP surgery when he was trying to get the kneecaps back in place. ??
-Is this really bad?

If anyone's had experience with Tamadol and upset tummy please let me know!

My question is how much should he be moving right now? Ok for him to take a few steps and walk now or then? Or should he be completely immobile except for sitting up?

Thanks again!!

walking a little bit is fine. its good to get the joints moving. when she stretched like he used to he probably forgot about the surgery for a minute and then realized he shouldn't do that. so he may have done something that hurt and realized he shouldn't do that right now. no biggie. where i was we should encourage 3 10 minute walks a day to go potty after the first few days.

as for the diarrhea it could be caused by a few things. maybe its the tramdol, maybe its just the stress of the whole experience, maybe its what he's been eating...who knows. you can stop the tramadol and see what happens, put him back on his kibble, or you can wait. up to you.

The upset tummy is probably from the antibiotics and pain meds combined with the stress of surgery, his situation, the anesthesia, etc. You really need to get him on some probiotics in him. I would also consider weaning him off the pain meds and seeing how he does. Remember, a little pain is good- it will help not do too much. We were told to walk him a little at every potty break as a start to his physical therapy.

Yes I would like to wean him off of the Tamadol except for a small dose at night to help him sleep. I have some Forti Flora from the vet when he had an upset tummy before, isn't that kind of like probiotics? I had NO luck in getting him to use it because he wouldn't touch his food when it was sprinkled with it. He's really smart about that kind of stuff but maybe I can trick him this time.

Mom to Hot Rod 10-22-2009 07:36 AM

I am sure that he had forgotton that he had surgery and was all normal until he stretched. Hot Rod did the same thing. I felt so bad as you could tell right when he did it that it hurt. Hot Rod got an upset tummy from his meds as well and we stopped them a couple days after his surgery. As for the diarehha, could be his system still working on getting back to normal or could be the tramadol. I would try and wean him off of it. Hugs.

Thanks everyone!! Good suggestions!

We were able to keep him 3 x 3 pen area so a little walking is okay. The thing that our surgeon told us to keep him from making the motion of pushing off on the knee. That is what will hurt him healing properly. Pushing off and standing on his knee is what you want to discourage. Hot Rod used stand up on his hinds with his front paws on the side of the pen for us to get him out.

So he shouldn't be trying to sit up and then stand up on his own? Meaning he can walk a little if we stand him up and let him totter around?

We had a pen like that and Moose would do the same thing- stand on his hind legs for us to get him out and then he resorted to jumping on his hind legs up and down for us to get him out!! I definitely won't use that pen because I don't want to even risk that happening.

That's why I had to put Ranger in his recovery house. He was a little sh*t about the x-pen, always trying to stand up and jump out. Bad boy!!

Laura- maybe you can mix the probios you have in a little water in a syringe and make a paste, then force it :p If you use it, make sure you use it several hours before/after his other meds.

He can totally sit up and stand on his own. Its the standing on the back legs doing the springy get-me-out dance that is a big NO NO!! You should start walking him a little several times a day. Careful if you have wood, tile or linolium (sp?) floors, you don't want him to slip. Carpet and short grass or cement is best.

Mom to Hot Rod 10-22-2009 08:14 AM

Yes, as Amanda said, the springy dance is what you don't want, or jumping motion like going up stairs. Trying to stand is okay provided he is not straining-so you may still have to help him up for now. :) and yes, becareful when Moose walks, you don't want a slippery surface where he could wipe out easily.

kalina82 10-22-2009 02:56 PM

you can always give him some plain non-fat yogurt. that helps with upset tummies and antibiotics

and i agree, standing up on his own and walking around is fine. what you don't want is running, jumping, playing, stairs, and bouncing up and down on his back legs. also do not put him on furniture. sit with him on the floor instead of him sitting with you on the couch. it only takes 1 second of not paying attention to him for him to jump on/off the couch/bed and break a leg. i've seen it happen. its not pretty
