Derby with Blood in his stool :( We believe Derby has a Cold, but then he did his business outside and it was quite soft- next thing we know he has to go again and it's nothing but blood :( I suggested we take him to the vet, but my husband says he's fine and to wait it out. He thinks maybe he took big of a poo, but with a loose stool, that wouldn't be it? He is sneezing, and has snot out of his nose. He seems stuffed up and is hacking. He's had diarreah. Now we find blood in his stool. Other than that he's been acting fine aside from more than usual whining and cying. He's been doing it during the night too, and seems to want more cuddles, and it's not like him to whine and cry like this all the time and keep us up at night. We figure it's his cold... thoughts? He's almost 4 months old. |
Bella just got over a bug. I gave her some childrens immodium AD for the poops, I didnt have any pumpkin on hand. She got where she wasnt eating her food had to fix some boiled chicken. Lasted about three days. But with yours hacking and having snot probably need to take it to the vet. 4 months is still young and if it was me I would go on to the vet. |
A four month old with blood in his stool needs to see the vet now. It could be that he ate something that he shouldn't have or it could be something very serious. Yorkies (esp. pups) can dehydrate very quickly when they have diarrhea anyway. |
He needs to go to the vet....I am sorry but if a human saw blood in their stool I would tell them they need to go to the doctor...a dog is no different...your little one could go down fast. |
I would take him to the vet right away if he has blood in his poop!!!! Good luck! |
That's what I said and my hubby said he's fine. He's "just sick with a cold" My husband is now making sure he puts Derby in a sweater and today we bought him a coat. It's getting pretty cold/windy around here (Ontario, Canada). Before he was thinking he didn't need to put Derby in anything until there was snow!! Poor guy has been shivering, and he had his hair buzz cut end of August do he doesn't have much to protect himself! I was putting him in a sweater. We got him a stylish coat, so now he's all bundled up. I can't exactly take him against my husband's will.... but since it happened on the road on our walk today, we don't have a sample for the vet :( My husband said "we'll see keep our eye out over the next few days", but I just want to make an appointment after the holiday. Call me a Mom! but if you guys say GO that was my first instinct!! He's just a puppy!! Who knows it could be something else? A cold, and something else...? What does blood in the stool usualy mean? It was bright Red. |
I would suggest the vet for sure!!! I'm sorry but I'd go against my husband on this one. Especially in such a young pup. |
The next few days?!?!?!?!?!?!?! If you share the pup, then take your half to the vet. His half will have to come too. :) What shots did he have and when? |

And when was his last fecal or deworming? |
He just finished his last round of shots last week, (or was it 2 weeks ago?) recently anyway. The next vet visit should be to get him fixed at 5/6 months the said. Between the breeder and us, we've had... It's amazing he has a cold, after having the influenza shot?? Is that normal??It matches the symptoms of Kennel Cough (hacking, snot, sneezing, blood in stool...) Distemper Infectious Hepatitis ParaInfluenza Parovirus DHPP Booster Leptospirosis Lyme Booster Rabies |

Causes Apart from gastrointestinal disorders, there can be numerous reasons for blood in dog's feces. These are some of the major causes of the disorder Bacterial infections like 'Clostridium' and 'Salmonella' Certain allergies from food additives, emulsifiers or fats Contraction of the anus or colon, due to cancer, trauma or inflammation Different intestinal parasites like whipworm and ringworm Disruption of colon or rectum, due to fractures in the pelvis area Inflammation in the anal sacs or 'Anal Sacculitis' Inflammation of the colon (Colitis) or the rectum Overeating or ingestion of sharp things (bone, plastic, needles) Presence of benign and malignant tumors in the abdomen Presence of protozoal agents like 'Coccidiosis' Sudden change in the dietary plan or consuming food meant for people Viral infections such as 'Parovirus' and 'Coronavirus' Other bleeding disorders in the body |
off to the vet He really needs to be seen like everyone else said. Yorkies and dehydrate really quick at that age. Was he given a shot for kennel cough? Did he come from a kennel or a home breeder? I would tell your husband you love him but, like the other person said take your half with you and your husbands half will just have to go along for the ride. Good luck oh I would keep him on a blane diet. Cottage cheese, boiled eggs I dont know if you have Pedi lite there but that is really great to re hydrate your puppy. Again will keep him in my prayers tonight |

Ya I will do this. He started to get it after my husband started to take him the dog park, and combination of cold weather and not being dressed properly- baaam cold!! I'm sure some other dog had it too. Does it go away on its own? Is it like humans? how long should we expect this? Are there special things we should do to at least treat the cold part of this? |

Like i mentioned in a previous post, he's been to the small dog park socializing a lot recently out in the cold and stuff, so it's likely he caught the cold there! as well as not being dressed for the weather... I will leave it until the holiday since everything is closed anyway (Thanksgiving!) and then I'll force the issue! |

You can ask your vet what cough meds and such should be given if it doesn't start getting better. If he starts throwing up or has more diarrhea/bloody stool, other things like parvo would be a concern. You can give a bland diet to try and settle things in there, but chicken and rice sure won't do a thing for worms and the like. Pedialyte and Pediasure are also possibilities, but it most likely won't help to fix the underlying problem. |

lol, so many rules in the Yorkie game. |
no park I would not take him back to the pet park anymore till he is completly well. How he was dressed may not have been so much of an issue as the park. Not all furbaby parent do what they should have give their animals the shots they need. He could have gotten kennel cough there. He is still young for a kennel cough shot. I only give it to my puppies that will be near a dog show since I show. Good luck again I am still praying it is thanksgiving there now? |
If that were my pup, he would have been at a vet today!! You need to get to a vet...forget all of the guessing and take him ASAP!! |
Yes it's Thanksgiving weekend here :) And Derby has had this cold for a few days now, and the blood is new today.! Can't do anything until the holiday, and tomorrow everything is closed! Given that today is Sunday, he couldn't have gone today either..... I didn't realise there were so many possible issues with this bloody stool!! I'm so scared for baby. I keep bugging my husband!! |
when we took him our vet gave him the combo parainlfuenza/bordetella vaccine- that's the k-9 shot. I looked it up.I never put up on my list, because I didn't realise it was a vaccine. |
Bordatella and parainfluenza are different. A parainfluenza vaccine wouldn't really cause these cold symptoms. While it isn't something that any owner wants to do because of $$$, there are ER vets in most areas of the US in Canada or an emergency number that you can call so your vet will come in and start treatment. Because very seriously, it is impossible to predict what might happen. If he continues to have bloody stool or a lot of diarrhea after you go to bed, by morning it may be too late. It just isn't a good situation. It is important to always have an emergency vet's number handy so that you can at least call to see if they think the problem is urgent or if it can wait. |
I would take him to an emergency vet. Since he is a puppy, he may have parvo. Bloody diarreah is a symptom of it, and it can be very quick acting. |
Here's an emergency vet I googled in Ontario. They're open 24/7. I'd def take him in now!! 920 Yonge St Toronto, ON M4W 3C7, Canada (416) 920-2002 |
derby Please let us know how he is. I know how it is to have a hard headed husband I live with one. But the longer you wait could end up costing you the puppy plus larger vet bills the longer it goes untreated the worse things could get. |

Take him to the emergency vet you mentioned. I would not play with all of those symptoms! |
Bloody stool isnt something to mess around with you need to go to an emergency vet |
