Blood Clot, please pray for Ariel I just came from the vet and the Dr says Ariel is paralyzed on the right side of her body and slightly paralyzed on her back left leg. She still has control over her anals, which he says it's a good thing. He said this is happening most likely due to a bloot clot in her neck area. When I asked for a reason behind it, he said he doesn't know, that it does happen to dogs. When I asked about her recovery, he said there's a 50/50 chance of her losing all function. This is really stressing me out. She was fine yesterday before bed but when I was about to leave the house in the morning, she was just laying on her right side. She didn't get up and I just thought she was sleepy so I picked her up and put her on the couch while I was getting breakfast. I expected her to sit but she flopped over to the right side. I put her on the floor and tried to get her to run but she couldn't get up which made me believe she broke or misplaced a leg bone. But the Dr says it's her spinal cord. Has anyone had any experience with this or know what might have happened? She was happy and running around yesterday so this is really confusing/stressing me out :( |

Thanks everyone for putting Ariel in your thoughts. TLC thank you for the link. It gave me much more information, and the vet did say it could be a herneating disc. I'm going to be picking her up around 5 or 6. I'm hoping for more info by then. |
I'm SO sorry to read about Ariel! *HUG* That poor baby...and poor you. Is the vet taking x-rays today? If it is a ruptured disc, it should show up on x-rays. My daughter's yorkie, Kirby had a ruptured disc and was paralyzed on his back legs. He recovered fully, but it was 5 or 6 weeks and very scary. Also, that neck problem that some yorkies get...Atlantoaxial Instability? That just came to mind too and I don't know a lot about that. I'll say a prayer for your precious Ariel...and for you! I hope to read good news in an update soon! |

I picked her up a couple hours ago, and the vet says everything came out normally. If everything came out normal, WHY is she still unable to stand and sit upright, WHY is she not able to move the right side of her body? This is all so frustrating and stressful that I don't why this is happening to her. He gave me some meds for her to take twice daily and wants us to go back in a few days. I will be needing to hand feed her, help her go potty, change the position she's lying in every so often, etc. I can hold her upright to help her go pee and poop, but what if, for the lack of better word atm, nothing comes out? :confused: Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Connie, your story has given me hope. Thanks so much for sharing :) |
Sweetie, thank you for taking the time to give us an update. Under the circumstances, it would be very difficult for me not to take her to a different vet tomorrow. Obviously she is not OK if she can't stand up. I know you want answers, and so would I. You deserve them. Keeping you and your baby in my prayers. |
Poor baby. I would also get a second opinion possibly from a specialist. I will keep her in my prayers and you too. |

I have no idea what specialists are in your area, but I would be seeing one as soon as possible. A few years ago one of my pups started to show some neuro changes and within a three week period he went from weak to being unable to stand at all. He was misdiagnosed by one specialist who said his knees and shoulders had all gone bad. Seemed to me like a weird thing to happen, so I followed my instincts and went to Texas A&M where they diagnosed two cervical herniated discs. He had surgery the very next day and was able to stand immediately after! He had some complications following the surgery, but ended up fine and in no time had learned to walk again!! Just like people docs, vets sometimes miss the mark in diagnosing things. If you know something is wrong, it is! Take her for another opinion! I will keep you and her in my thoughts and prayers. |
Gosh! There is definitely something wrong and your vet should be trying to figure out a diagnosis! Dogs don't just become paralyzed and not able to stand or walk for no reason! Is there someone else nearby that you can take her to? What kind of meds did he give her? Pain meds and maybe prednisone? I'm so worried about Ariel. I'll be praying! I hope you can find a vet that can give you some answers and come up with a treatment plan! Hugs to you! |
I agree with the posts above, something is wrong. What meds did the Vet give you? What instructions did the Vet give you??? The Vet should have given you a refferal to see a Neuro Specialist??? That is what I would be doing ASAP :( |
I know you must be scared being alone in this, while the vet is telling you he can't find anything. Listen to the above poster's. Seek another vet for a second opinion better yet a specialist. Something must be wrong, even just a pinched nerve could cause her to become inmobile. Good luck. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayer's. Hugs, |

Just wanted to thank everyone again for keeping Ariel in your thoughts. She is much better than she was last week -- she has regained some function on her right hind leg, allowing her to get up and get herself around. We're staying positive :) |
I'm glad to hear she's improving. Have the doctors been able to determine what's causing it? |
