| Concerned about my Alfie Alfie had his rabies vaccination yesterday. He seemed fine throughout the day, but late last night he yelped when we picked him up and this morning he yelps when you touch him. I'm very concerned about him. Is this a typical reaction? I called the vet after hours, so I'm waiting for the call back. Any guidance would be muchhh appreciated. Thank you in advance. |

| That can be normal. Are his gums pink? Is he drinking?

| Can't really speak for this morning since he really doesn't have an appetite at this time, but he ate a lot yesterday and drank well too. I called for him and he started crying as he was walking. My friend says that her dog acts like he's dying when he's in a little pain, so he may just not know how to handle the pain of a shot. Is there a pain reliever I can have the vet give him? |

| The last time that Dbugs had his rabies shot he was the same way. I called my vet and was told to give 1 baby aspirin every 6 hours for the next day and he was much better by that evening and back to his same old self. Let us know what your vets says after you hear back. Poor little guy

| Some vets will have you give aspirin. There are better pain meds for dogs, but one time shouldn't be a problem. I personally would get something different though unless you vet is really okay with just using aspirin. He shouldn't have to be in that much pain, so I would medicate.

| I'm still waiting to hear from the vet. I left a message with after hours, but called just now and got a member of her staff. He's sleeping right now, and seems comfortable. I'm thinking and hoping it's pain meds that will fix him. I will let you all know when I hear from her. Thanks! |

| Oh sure, I agree that there are much better pain meds that can be given. I hate when Dbugs gets his rabies since he is the only on that does not feel well afterward. Breaks your heart just like when the kids were little and would get sick.

| Peanut gets really sore too after his rabies... He will be sore for like 2-3 days.. If you can do warm compresse's, that is what my vet tells me to do it will help. Sometimes Peanut will tolerate it and sometimes he is just to sore. I just let him rest and try not to bother him.

| If he is having any type of injection site reaction, you can give children's Benadryl and it wouldn't have to be approved by the vet...

| I did give Benadryl this last time and he didn't seem to be quite as sore but he still just was not himself. Like the OPer he was fine until about 3 AM and that is when he let out a yelp when I picked him up to move him while he was sleeping on top of me. When I called to see about pain meds they suggested the baby aspirin and after just one dose he was much better. Next time he gone for shots I'm going to ask while I am there for a pain med so I am not fool around with him being in pain again. This was only his second time getting his rabies, I thought I was being prepared with the Benadryl dose prior to the shot but it was not enough.

| I agree with you Ellie! It sucks seeing my honey in pain. He cries when he walks and he is resting now and yelped when he repositioned himself . I'm still waiting to hear from the vet. I called back again and should (hopefully) be hearing from her soon. |

| Update Alfie seems to be doing better. I picked up some Metacam at the vet on Thursday. He started acting like his old self later that day thank goodness. I haven't seen Alfie since Friday since I work away on the weekends. He said that the swollen bump is still there (not sure if I mentioned that or not...we discovered that after I picked his meds up...vet said to keep an eye on it). Is this something to be concerned about? I'm going to call the vet just to make sure things are okay, but in the meantime your feedback would be so appreciated! Thank you all so much for your help on Thursday and always! |
