i have know clue. It could be a lot of things i would take him to the vet tomorrow like you said. hope everything goes ok and it is a simple problem. you don't see poop coming out of it do you? |
It sounds like his anal gland has ruptured. This happens when they get impacted and infected. He needs to see a vet today as he needs antibiotics. Anal Sacs |
It sounds like a problem with the anal glands. Do you have them expressed often? If not then the glands fill up and can cause a fisher (sp) It happened to a friend of mines chihuahua. Good Luck and get him to a vet. |
Had this happen. On my old departed guy, when he got way up in years, he had problems with impacted anal glands. The stuff inside was more like cement than the stinky oozy stuff it was supposed to be. He once developed a fissure as a result. Keep it clean till you get to the vet. Warm compresses help. If that's what it is, he'll need antibiotics. |
Definitelty sounds like an anal rupture. Andromeda has had this happen before. Take her to the vets and get some antibiotics and they will probably also suggest warm cloths on her backside for about 5 minutes 3-4 times a day. This will help clear out the rest of the excriment as well as encourage blood flow to the infected area to help in healing. Please keep us posted. |

The exact same thing happened to my daughter's Cocker. She noticed her cocker licking and dragging her butt late one night. My daughter saw a huge swollen lump under the anus and rushed the dog to the emergancy vet. While they were waiting for the vet the lump burst and left a huge open hole. The vet cleaned the wound and put the dog on an antibiotic. |
Coco is at the vet since this morning, they said it was what you guys told me, an anal sak rupture, good thing is that he wont be in pain anymore, but he have to stay there because they are gonna put annestecia and they are gonna do some cleaning some other things:( thanks to all of you. Ill let you know how he is doing as soon as i get him back, hope to be soon:) |

Very informative thread. Something I did not know even after 12 yrs. of having Yorkies. |
Ceeby, my little stud dog, had his anal gland rupture last year and the hole was like that. the vet put him on antibotics and he was fine. i took him to the vet because I thought he had a growth under his anal gland and by the time the vet looked at him, the "growth" was gone and the hole remained. |
I am very glad you took your little guy to the vet:) hope he feels better soon and wil be back to his old self soon. Sounds like a painful experiencce for a dog to go through. :( |
I hope that your little guy feels better soon. |
Glad that the vet is able to keep him from being in pain and is going to take care of his problem asap. ......... another good thread.... very informative, Kudos to those who were quick to respond to help out!!! :yorkietal |
glad you took your baby to the Vet. I have to thank you, this is one thread that I absolutely had never heard of before. I mean I knew they had glands but I never knew that they could rupture. This was a good learning thread for me. |
Hi everybody, coco is back home and he is doing well, the vet gave him some ointment, pain killer, and some amoxil too to prevent infection, the only thing i dint like is that they put this big funnel shape thing on his head to prevent him from licking his wound, i know this is for his own good, but my poor dog cant even walk cuz this thing hits on the ground and then he starts jumping like crazy, I took this thing away and I put a baby diaper on him:D he looks funny with his little diaper. I want to inform everybody that i didnt notice any symptoms before i actually saw the wound, he his an active dog, and he was like that until the day that he started to lick the wound, then, i notice that something was wrong, also, he is kind of quite, he just wants to be in the darkness of the bathroom by himself, so i asume that he still have some pain:( but thats only until i get his little ball and show it to him, then he gets back to normal, he jumps, run, and fly!! for his toy, then after a few trows he loose the interest and then he goes back to the bathroom, hope he gets back to normal soon. I want to tanks everybody for showing support, and also to those that didnt know like me anything about this, good thing to know that a few of you are more informed about it. Thank you:) |
Wow, I totally never knew this could actuallly happen! At first I thought this thread was a joke... boy what a lesson this has been to many of us! I hope your little guy gets back to normal soon. |
i'm really glad you got him to the vet and everything is going to be better now |
i know anal glands can get infected and need to be squeezed at times. and i know the food i feed my dogs keep their poop really firm for they have to give a nice push when they poop to keep their anal glans from filling up. but i had know idea it can rupture. you might want to change his diet when he is completely healed something that gives him firmer poops for it helps naturally keep the anal glans clean. wow i had know idea that could happen i though it would be a fistula or something like that. |
I am very glad to see the updated post... I have not had this happen but have heard of this.. many people are not aware.. I get my dogs groomed once in awhile just to make sure all is well with anal glands.. If I have to go to the vet with one.. I take them all and ask vet to check while I am there.. just as a precaution.. Keep the Elizabethian collar on him tho.. I know it is a pain for you to see him like this.. but it will help him heal quicker.. you do not want larger problems with infection.. Just glad he is home now.. |
Wooow, poor little guy. Glad he is on the mend. Perhaps you can cut the cone down a bit so it is not as wide and he can wear it. I would think the diaper would restrict air which may help in healing. The other thought would be maybe a cotton infant onesie shirt? to keep the area covered? Best of luck in healing quickly. |
I'm so glad to hear that Coco is on the mend. I knew about anal glands getting filled up, but never bursting. My kids get their anal glands taken care of when they go to the groomers. 10 years ago, I had only two cocker spaniels. I did end uptaking them to the vet to get their anal glands expressed. The only way I could tell that theyhad a problem is when they started dragging their buts on the carpet. |
You should tell the vet the collar is too big...Coco should definitely be able to walk with it on. If they don't have a smaller one, you could try trimming it down some. As long as his mouth and tongue can't get past the edge, it will work to keep him from licking his sore spot. Dogs never like those collars, but tough. ;) They get used to them. You're the mom and you know best, right? :D |
