Chocolate, induced vomiting, and it's gross. My dog ate a LARGE amount of milk chocolate- the $1.50 sized bar. I induced vomiting with hydrogen peroxide within an hour and a LARGE amount of undigested chocolate was expelled. I continued to induce vomiting every 15 minutes until no more solid chocolate was being returned. I called the doctor, who is pretty confident that the dog will be okay, except he keeps rubbing his face and mouth on the floor. I thought perhaps the peroxide made his mouth tingle or sore. Any other ideas or suggestions now? |
Sounds like his mouth is irritated. Hope he feels better soon. |
Buddy still isn't back to normal. Buddy isn't hyper or drinking excessive water like the articles say he will. The doctor said to give him milk of magnesia to "move the chocolate through quickly." He almost has the opposite symptoms that are described. He is quieter than usual, doesn't want to play, and little appetite. His respiration rate is within the normal rate. I'm still worried. It has been 11 hours since I discovered him with the chocolate bar. How can I tell if he is just tired, or if he is seriously sick? I was so upset that I didn't think to ask how much or how often I could give him milk of magnesia. Does anyone have any experience with it? |

When I had to induce vomiting for Cali when she got one of my poms heart meds, she was out of it for hours. She looked really bad and I only had to give her the hydrogen peroxide once because the pill came right up. I would try to get him to drink some water or lick on ice cubes to keep him hydrated. If he seems more than just wore out from the ordeal I would have your vet check him out. Please keep us posted. |
Bella Mia ate a significant amount of Hersheys Kisses (we learned yes she can get on the kitchen table). We induced vomiting and the vomit smelled like chocolate. She had two bouts of loose stools. Her heart rate did increase and she pantted ALOT! But she didnt get hyper or have any more symptoms either. |
Buddy is sleeping...I hope He is worn out and sleeping on my lap. I just keep watching for more signs. I gave him 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of Milk of Magnesia a couple hours ago. I wonder if a one-time dose is enough. I love my Buddy. |

Awww I hear you! Maybe just keep an eye on him and see if he is getting better or worse. I dont think I would give him anything else until I saw more signs or he seemed worse. I work in the medical field and I think sometimes we try to over treat when the best medicine is running it's course. I am like you though and would be watching him like a hawk worried:confused:. I hope he gets better and spunky soon. |
i agree; no more meds for now; the most important is to get liquid in his system and food if possible. ask the vet if gerber baby food would be the best right now; since his tummy will be a bit sensitive. best of luck |
Glad you were able to act so quickly, I'm sure you saved his life! Hope he's doing better tomorrow. |
I hope we get through the night He is so lethargic, still vomits a little after he drinks. He's just sleeping all the time, but it sounds like he is snoring--don't know what that means. I keep saying his name to wake him every five or ten minutes. I'm snuggling him to keep his head upright. I don't think there is anything a vet could do. I'm afraid that if I do call the vet in tonight, he would be left alone in a cold kennel all night. That might be harder on him than me holding him in a blanket at home. It is 9:40 pm here |

No emergeny vet Our vet would come in, but no one stays overnight at the hospital. He just drank a few laps before my last post, urinated, vomited, then went back to sleep. It's going to be a long night. |

In vet's care now. Sick, sick little man My Buddy is at the hospital now, hooked to IV's. Blood tests revealed a high "liver level," but I don't know what that means. They said we can pick him up in 24 hours, but I'm still worried. Does that mean the liver is permanently damaged, or is just not working for the time being? Can the liver repair itself? It has now been 42 hours since he ate the chocolate. I guess I didn't get enough of the chocolate out of him. I'm still heartbroken and beating myself up over the whole incident. |

Any news? please keep us posted. Sushi and I are praying for your little one! :( |
My prayers are with you , I hope your baby gets better soon. |
Yes the liver can regenerate. Milk thistle has been shown to regenerate the liver. We use a product called Marin for our dog with liver disease and her blood tests have shown significant improvement in liver functioning since the use. It is a supplement and safe in dogs - you might want to consider speaking to your vet about using it to counteract some of the liver damage due to the chocolate poisoning. You have our thoughts and prayers, I know how scary hospitalizations can be. Keep us posted. |

Maintaining I called the doctor's at closing, and my buddy was responding to sound. Still on IV. It will have been 48 hours in the morning. Hubby goes to see about picking him up in the morning. I sure hope there is dramatic improvement. I'm still so very, very worried, and the house is EMPTY. |
i would keep activated charcoal in the house incase he does that again. Activated charcoal is estimated to reduce absorption of poisonous substances up to 60%. my baby ate some chocolate and i mixed some activated charcoal with a bit of water sucked it up in a syringe and gave it to her. 10 min latter she was better. you can use it when they eat other things that scare you. vets usually pump there tummies then give the activated charcoal in a bad case even in human poisonings they use it. not a bad thing to have around when things like that happen. Milk thistle is good for the liver like other people been saying. hope your baby is ok. |
Mixed up and still hurting Talked to the doctor's office, and Buddy was doing better, standing and eating this morning, so we could pick him up after noon. But then they called at 1 saying he was vomiting again. They want to keep him on the IV overnight and see what happens. Now I'm afraid that he isn't going to heal. I am soooo scared and sad. |

Is the vet checking to see if there anything else going on with him? I am sorry he is still in the hospital. I really hope he heals soon and is able to come home to you! |
I'm just seeing this now and just wanted to say I hope that your sweet Buddy gets completely well real soon. |
