Throwing up Blood I have a 10 month old male Yorkie named Sammy :aimeeyork and he woke up this morning (3AM) throwing up a little bit of blood. On Saturday (4 days ago) he swallowed a furniture staple shaped like “[“ and he didn’t poop it back out until 48 hrs later. I was told from my nurse to feed him bread and rice to pack his digestive system so it wouldn’t puncture anything. Throughout that time, I was paying very close attention to all of his stool and he didn’t poop out any blood (which I thought was a good sign) other than the staple wrapped in fuzzy things found probably from his shredding fur off his furry toys. Anyways, since Monday (2 days ago) I’ve been switching Sammy back to his regular diet and I believe he’s just fed up and decides to just sniff it and walk away without eating it – which in this case is Wellness Puppy dry kibbles mixed with Wellness Chicken/Turkey & Sweet Potato Formula canned wet food. We’ve been feeding this to him for a good 5 months already and noticed he’s already kind of sick of it. To entice him to eat, every now and then we’d even boil regular chicken breast and throw it in the mix. Since then he’s been throwing up a couple of times. The first time was straight up foam, which I believe is normal from not eating as I have read Yorkie’s have a strong acid problem if they don’t eat on time. Sammy would throw up in the middle of playing, while he chews on things. Then finally tonight (3AM Wednesday), he finally threw up a little bit of blood. Now that got me a little concern because I am not sure if that’s normal or could Sammy possibly has internal bleeding (maybe from the staple incident?) I know I will be paying attention to next throw up (if he does again) to make sure there’s no more blood, but do anybody know if it’s normal from simply not eating? It seems like I’m stuck in a dilemma with the eating part, Sammy hasn’t been eating since Monday and I know he’s only throwing up because he’s gotten too picky and bored of his food. He’d eat boiled chicken breast and treats straight up, but not his dry food, not even when it’s mixed with wet food anymore. What should I do? I know some will recommend me to switch up his food to another brand, but from what I’ve found in research, Wellness is the only brand I trust with none by-products and etc. :animal-pa Do I keep feeding Sammy the same food and take it away after 20 mins of not touching the food? I was told that’s how to train a dog to eat; because I’m sure he will eventually eat when he gets to the point where he’s too hungry – but at what cost? Will I have to watch my Yorkie suffers from throwing up in the meantime? :( Or is there a better way? Other than that, he’s still a pretty playful and active little boy. Please Advice. Thanks! |
if he is throwing up blood he needs to go to the vet now |
Awww, poor guy. First, throwing up blood is something I would take seriously and get to the vet asap. Everything could be fine, but please don't take the risk. As for the other part, I switched from free feeding awhile ago and I did exactly what you said, I put the food up after 20 minutes or so and didn't put it back out until the next meal time. (Just be careful if your baby is small, you may want to schedule extra meal times so that he's getting the chance to eat). Mine all come running when they hear me open the food container and clean their bowls everytime. (unless someone isn't feeling well) |
I would get him to the vet as soon as possible. Please keep us posted. |
Just a note, if he is off his food you may want to give Nutrical. |
If he swollowed a staple and is throwing up blood a vet visit is a must. Worry about his eating after the visit. If his eating habits have changed after the staple was eaten the two may very well be connected. Good luck and please keep us informed. |
I agree w/ the others - I'd get to a vet asap. |
I would go to the vet as fast as I could! Good luck with your baby! |
I am taking him into the Vet soon to get him checked out regarding the throwing up litte bit of blood this morning in this vomit. I will keep you all updated what the status is. Thank you all for caring! As for the not eating problem I have to deal with it when I get back. |
I brought my Sammy into the Vet, they gave him a shot and took some blood for tests. I just got a call that he was positive for Pancreatitis. Doctor is recommending me to continue to feed him chicken and rice. Gave me some medication and there'll be potential I'll have to hospitalize him tomorrow if he doesn't get better. |
Thank goodness you could get him into the vet! How scary!! Keep us updated and prayers to your lil guy. |
Sorry to hear about your baby. I am so glad you took Sammy in. Keep a close eye on him for dehydration. |
Please ask questions about this blood work to make sure they have diagnosed properly. If your baby was sick there will be some blood values that will be affected due to dehydration but will be normal once the baby is doing better. This was the case with my Lexie. It turns out she had a bacterial thing going on in her tummy because of some flossies I gave her. She is also a picky eater. I have her on wellness too but am researching the honest kitchen preference formula. You add your own meat, the food comes with the veggies and other goodies. Good luck. |
Oh wow. I am glad you took him in. I hope he feels better soon! |
My little one was also throwing up blood, I took some of the vomit with me when we went to the vet. She too had a bacterial infection, she is on a chicken and rice diet and one dose of antibiotic daily for 9 days. She also got a shot at the vet of the antibiotic, this was early morning and that afternoon she was sooo much better..Also my vet said with a bacterial infection some blood (red tinged) was not alarming. Good luck with your baby! |
Reason why Sammy threw up Blood Quote:
What do I have to do to get him to eat? I'm back in this dilemma where if I don't feed him, he'll throw up again and get sick....and watch him suffer. But at the same time, in order to get a picky dog like Sammy to eat (or any dog as a matter of fact) I know I should starve him and take his food away after 20mins of not touching it until he gets so hungry to the point, he'll learn to love his kebble. Please anyone, any good pointers or advice? |
So glad your little guy is so much better. Sorry I don't have any advice on the food for you. I have not experienced a picky eater in a long time. My babies all love to eat. You also posted good information about what happened and why. Thanks for the information. |
Hi, my little Lexie out of the blues started throwing up, yellow foamy stuff a while back, the next day soft stools mixed with blood, then just the d. I took her to the vet, paid quite a bit, the antibiotic she was given took care of the problem after 2 rounds of it, the vet said she may have had a bacterial infection. Probably from the flossies I had given her, which she loved but they don't love her tummy. :( She is a very picky eater, I was putting baby food in her dry kibble, we switched from chicken soup to california naturals, which she hated, even with the chicken baby food on it, we moved to wellness but still had to cover it with canned meat. I started giving my 3 Honest Kitchen preference formula just to see if they liked it, I have not even added the meat yet, they Love it!, it smells good, and apparently tastes good to them. When I had them on California naturals I had found that the lamb formula had some type of animal hair sticking out of the dry kibble , so I am happy to have found something where I can add the meat, I know where it came from, no by products involved, or other stuff to worry about, I cook it myself and add it to the honest kitchen preference formula. I would say give the honest kitchen a try, they will send you samples. If you want to continue with your dry kibble then adding some wet food may entice your furbaby or try the chicken baby food on the dry kibble. Good luck:) |

Thank you so much for the advice, I definitely need to try something different because I don't want to continue to feed him rice and chicken. Today I tried mixing his adult dry kebble along with his rice and chicken. And of course, the intelligent little guy he is, spread his food all over the floor and ate everything but the dry kebble. I want to stay away from mixing dry food along with wet canned food unless I know for sure there's no hope. The reason I say this is because I only have 1 yorkie and the part about Sammy is he'd eat it when the can is fresh (sometimes)...but even smallest Wellness Canned wet food available would last at least a week since he's such a small eater; each meal i'd only use a spoon full or two only. I would then refrigerate it in the meantime, but he knows once it's not a fresh can, he won't even touch it. And truth be told, he's gotten to the point where he wouldn't even touch a fresh Canned food. Hopeless little :aimeeyork. I have even tried throwing in chicken into the mix as mentiioned before, he'd sometimes eat it, but most of the time he just leaves it untouch or just picks the chicken from the mix by spreading it all on the ground. I dunno what to do with this guy anymore. I'll think about entising the new Adult Wellness dry kebble with wet food, but I know once I go there, there's no turning back with this little guy. The last thing I want to end up is having to serve him a lamb chop every meal. |
Not eating could potentially lead to throwing up blood Just want to do an update on Sammy :aimeeyork. He's been recovering and he's back to normal from having pancreatitis. The past couple of days I've been trying to switch him back to dry adult Wellness kibble from Chicken & rice . Once again, he decides to starve himself again for 1 day and a 1/2. 2 Nights ago he threw up in the middle of the night again, not only bile, but blood again . The acid in his stomach is just too much with an empty stomach. The next morning I had to feed him a 1/4 of a 10mg table of Pepcid AC to reduce his acid and have to start feeding him chicken and rice. Hopefully him throwing up blood will go away again. Apparently, not eating could potentially lead to throwing up blood. |
Hi. I am so glad your Sammy is on the road to recovery and yes your vet is right about the not eating making them sick and throw up blood. My Wee Sammie..who I lost in March at 15 years old..was also a picky eater..and he was prone also to bouts of days of not eating..then he would be sick..first bile only..then mixed with bloo..Each Vet visit they said he was just empty and dehydrated etc. He did have other problems in the end though..but with these little dogs who are fussy about ther food it can be a real problem. I do hope all goes well for your "Sammy".. Chrisann..x |

This is exactally how I started home cooking for Buddy. He became sick and vet kept switching food on me and he would not eat anything so I started cooking chicken and rice, which he gobbled up. After three months of switching foods I switched vet's, the new one found the problem, corrected it and now I had a yorkie who would not eat any food only chicken and rice. So I mixed the chicken and rice with the new food, little food at a time until I had more food but still the chicken and rice. He loved it, then I took away the rice, too much fiber on a daily basis and replaced it with veggies. He has been eating this way for four years. Hope that helps you. You have to trick these stinker's at times. I cook a family size pkg of boneless chicken breasts, around 8 in a pky, every other week and freeze them. They thaw over night in the refrig so they are always at hand for his feeding. Good luck, hope this works for you. |

protein in it, chicken, and is low in protein so the added chicken will not be a problem. One night last week I didn't have veggies made to add to his pm dinner and he just sat there looking at me and would not eat. He missed his veggies. LOL So I cooked up some peas and won't make that mistake again. |

So happy he is going better , good luck ! manina,miley:aimeeyork,max:animal36 |
So glad that Sammy is doing a little better. Here's a suggestion for the can of Wellness. I used to do this for my Buddy. As soon as you open the can, take a table spoon or however much you use and freeze it. I used the little jewelry plastic bags with the zip top. Make sure all the air is out of it, pop in the freezer until you need it. I normally would micro wave it until almost thawed. Then knead it in my fingers to finish thawing to room temp. Hope that helps |
