I woke up this morning and she was gone
 

My Cali was acting lethargic the other day so I took her to the vet in the town that I was visiting. She had never been there before,, but my aunt recommended the practice because that was where she takes her dogs. To make a long story short, the doctor said that she had an inflamed lympnode and when held a certain way she had mini seizure episode (slight head twitching). She suspected either a neurological problerm or a liver shunt. She was given a shot of long acting penicillin and diazepam. I was told that she would be tired most of the day from the diazepam shot and to force her food and water every hour through 8 small syringes. I did this and the following day she seemed better, because she wasn't sleeping all day and was a bit more active. I told the vet this when I dropped off a urine sample the next day. We went home and I put her in her cage to sleep. This morning I got up to take her out and she was gone, stiff and her covers were covered in what looked like blood or bile that seemed to have come from her mouth. What happened to my dog? I have been searching the net to find answers and have discovered that dogs with liver shunt have an intense sensitivity to diazepam. Could this have killed her? Was the vet wrong for giving her this if she suspected that she had a disorder that would react negatively to that drug?

This saddens me so much because Cali was my BEST FRIEND and like a child to me. I love her and took her everywhere with me. It hits hard because my mom died of a similar disorder a few years ago. I feel like I'm reliving this all over. I can't believe she's gone

I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to tell you how terribly sorry I was to read about your precious baby. I can't imagine how you must feel right now...please know that she is in a wonderful place now and no longer in any pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you ~~~

I'm SO sorry for your loss. It must be just heartbreaking. Why did the vet give diazapam to her? Without a diagnosis...Hugs to you and Take Care.

Oh my gosh.. That is absolutely horrible, I cant even imagine waking up to that. Im sorry I dont have any advise on your question, but I'm sorry for your loss. :(

How awful! I am so very sorry for your loss.
I certainly would be talking to the vet about what could
have occured. Also, look up the meds on line and see
what side effects they may have. I would want to know
to ease my mind.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your lil' one. I'm sure you're still just numb and in shock but, I would seriously consider an autopsy to know what it was that took her life.

One...for your own peace of mind, Two...rule out negligence on the part of the Vet (diazepam reaction?) and Third...if she died of something congenital, her breeder needs to be notified that she may have a problem in her line.

In answer to your question, diazepam is valium and it can be given if a dog is seizing from liver shunt.

I am so sorry for your loss. Seems we are losing way too many of our beautiful babies this year. May her memories give you some comfort as the days pass.

I know that it's valium ( a sedative) use to calm the seizing but on all the liver shunt information I was able to find it says that dogs with this disorder are extremely sensitive to diazepam especially. IDK if that could cause an adverse reaction

A dog having seizures from Liver shunt can safely be given an enema containing Lactulose to slow or stop the seizures. I would have a necropsy done and check into this further. Diazepam is regularly given to dogs to stop seizures, but dogs with suspected LS, of a breed known to have problems with anesthesias and preop drugs, (with or without a Shunt disorder), would require a different Treatment Plan altogether.
