Riker fell off the bed! =( 3 Attachment(s) Our puppy was sound asleep when I went downstairs to fix myself some dinner. I feel so guilty and horrible now because every time he hears a bag crinkle he gets excited, thinking he'll receive a treat. He must have heard me downstairs and jumped excitedly off the bed, or missed the pet stairs we have placed for our puppies. I'm not quite sure how he fell, but I heard a horrible yelp and a few whines afterwards. Immediately I ran upstairs to find my baby holding his front right paw up and running towards me in fear. We rushed him to the emergency vet and they have him overnight. They think he's either dislocated his elbow or there's a fracture in that area. The surgeon will be calling us tomorrow after they do more extensive X-rays (they have to put him down.) I know it's far fetched but I wanted to see if anyone has ever dealt with an elbow injury before. We were quoted over $4,500 for the surgery alone if in fact it is a fracture. They also gave us a disc of his x-rays. Honestly, this is my first time ever looking at a puppy's front leg. Just wondering if anyone can offer some more advice...I'm literally heart broken right now =( Below are some of the X-rays of the little guy's elbow. This has been one of the worst months ever.. |
i am so sorry about your baby. :( there are other YT members who have experience with this that should able to help you with and give you advice. |
Poor little guy! I've never seen the xrays of a little dogs elbow either. It looks like the tip of the elbow (medial epicondylar in human terms, not sure if the same for dogs) looks at the least widened away from the rest of the bone, maybe to the point of fracture. Could be avulsion fracture (where some of the bone is displaced from the rest of the bone). This is like an injury some young baseball pitchers get. You can check this site out and have some background knowledge of the terms for when the vet calls back: Practical Orthopaedic Sports ... - Google Books -- Not saying this is exactly the injury but it is the same area involved and might help with understanding the vet better when they call. So, sorry this has happened to little Riker! Hopefully it is not a fracture and he will get by with some splinting or something more minor than surgery. You wrote: " The surgeon will be calling us tomorrow after they do more extensive X-rays (they have to put him down.) " You meant put him under, right? My mouth flew open when I first read it but I think you just meant under anesthesia. "Put him down" usually means something much worse so you had me really worried there for a bit. Do you have pet insurance? If not, you might look into getting a Care Card to help with expenses. I "think" they have a no interest or at least low interest card for vet expenses. The vet' office should have info on one they recommend. Sorry I can't offer any advice. I even did a google image search for dog leg xrays but did not see anything looking like this one. Maybe we will have an xray tech in the YT membership that can offer something more come morning. But it will probably only be a few hours from now that the vet's office will call with a clearer diagnosis. Keeping you and Riker in my prayers! Keep us posted. Hoping surgery will not be required, but if it is that it goes smoothly with a quick recovery for Riker. May God watch over his care and give you some comfort during this stressful time! |
I'm so sorry this happened to little Ryker!! I'll keep him in my prayers! |
I'm so sorry Ryker has been injured. As long as it can be taken care of, that's all that matter's. Poor little fellow. Wishing your baby a successful surgery and a complete recovery, Hugs, |
I am very sorry your baby was hurt :( I have had a broken bone inmy elbow before as a young adult> I fell roller skating, of all things ! And YES it hurt badly . I could not bend my arm out . However, it did not need surgery, but with such a dog it is very differnt then a human. I hope Ryker is going to be ok. Best wishes. Cathy |
Sending healing thoughts for your baby! |
So sorry, I didn't re-read my post, I didn't "put down" as in put to sleep. I mean going under anesthesia. We called immediately this morning but unfortunately the doctor has been in emergency surgery since 8 am. He looked at Riker but has not had a chance to let us know his treatment plan. God I am so worried, even Kaia is super upset. Thank you for the prayers. If he needs surgery, we're lucky to be able to provide the money for our baby, it's just my boyfriend and I both are wondering if we should get second opinions before we go the route of surgery. In researching about any/most elbow injuries though, it does seem like surgery is the viable option...:( |
oh Im so sorry for your Riker... your in my thoughts and prayers.. |
I hope Riker feels better.....I dont have experience with this, but if you could get a second opinion why not? |
Ryker 1 Attachment(s) my thoughts and prayers are with you i went through a similar thing with maddox i know how you are feeling at this point my ex i believed pushed my lil man off the bed and he hit his leg on on the side wich is wood and broke it i was devistated and very costly cost me over a grand but he was worth every penny of it |
I'm so sorry this has happened! It's not your fault, though. It probably doesn't alleviate the guilt you're feeling, but this is one of those instances where it could have happened to any one of us. Is it so expensive because you went to an emergency vet instead of your regular vet? I would try and get an opinion from your regular vet. If it's something that has to be done right away, though, then I guess you wouldn't have much of a choice. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way!! And please keep us updated! |
omg I am sorry this happened.. I will pray it is not as bad as your thinking it is right now.. I do not know from xrays... I lost a girl to falling off the bed.. she punctured her left lung and bled out in less then 10 minutes...and she was gone.. We have a very low bed now.. with no box spring.. plus stools.. and I do not leave them in the bedroom alone now.. they cannot even go there.. I will watch to see how your babie is doing.. if we all send prayers.. they work... hugs to you.. I know how you feel..believe me.. |
I just heard from the surgeon and unfortunately his elbow is fractured. The surgeon is putting him under anesthesia now and doing better x-rays to find the best way for surgery. He'll be in surgery as soon. At this point, we don't even care what the costs are, we just want our little guy healthy again. I'm breaking down so much right now, I keep running through my head how incompetent of a mom I was leaving him on the bed alone. It doesn't make sense to me. He's such a sturdy little guy, or so I thought. We even have pet stairs because our bed is about 4 1/2 feet high. It's just such a sad day. I'm just really hurting and am so thankful that I have you all here. I'm so sorry to what you went through with Maddox. He looks like such a sweet baby. Hopefully, my little guy with have just as successful of a recovery. Thank you all for being so helpful. It really does help. |
I'm sorry - I was sure hoping for better news. How soon will they be doing the surgery? Stay strong - Ryker will sense if something's off when you see him again. Sending get well wishes for Ryker! {hugs} |
Our prayer r with u and your furbaby, keep us up to date .:( hugs:animal-pa Bark@ulater manina, miley :aimeeyork, max :aimeeyork |
Poor baby :( |
Please do not blame yourself.. I know it is so easy to do.. he is going to be ok.. and back to himself soon.. Just think you get to pamper him like a wee babie and spoil him even more.. honey it is ok..accidents happen in life.. not only with our beloved yorkies.. If you get down with blaming yourself.. you will not be in shape to care for him and he will feel your stress.. he is going to be ok.. just keep thinking this.. |

Poor little guy. I know how you feel. My little Max managed to break his two front legs. Your baby is going to need you to be strong and loving when he gets home. I ended up carrying Max around all the time and he really enjoyed it. He was on pain killers for the first few days but after that he did not seem to be hurting much. Your baby will definitely be wanting lots of attention and cuddling. Give him hugs and kisses from us. And good luck. |
Poor Riker! I'm sorry he fell off the bed and fractured his elbow. that looks like a lateral condyle fracture. I've seen a lot of them in little dogs, mainly from falling off couches and beds. I used to work for a vet orthopedic surgeon. He'll probably need a screw and a pin in his elbow to fix it. Then 2 months of recooping with heavy restrictions (aka crate rest 24/7 except for walks and PT). Riker is young so he'll bounce back fast. |
Poor Riker! When are they doing the surgery? |
Sending hugs and prayers for a speedy recovery ... |
Update on our baby...Riker had his surgery at 2:30 after if elbow was broken in two places. We're heading to PetCo to pick up a small exercise pen and padding and we have the option to either bring him home at 10:00 p.m. or in the morning. We're really not sure on what to do. The surgery went well but because of his size and the fracture, it was quite complicated. The poor little guy *hates* confinement so we figured an exercise pen would be the best. I'm considering getting some puppy diapers too so he doesn't have to get up when he goes to the bathroom. He has to be immobile. This is definitely a learning experience for my boyfriend and I. We feel so guilty for not crate training or confining our babies. Hopefully, other people will learn from our experience. :( Thanks again will let you know how he is when we get him home. |
Ah, poor little Riker. I'm so glad the surgeon was able to fix his little elbow. Wishing him a speedy recovery. How long does he have to be immobile? |
I am so glad to hear the surgery is over and your baby did well... an x pen will do him fine.. and if he lets you know.. I am sure you can hold him up to go potty on a pp pad.. good luck... I will keep watching for updates.. anne |
They said a few weeks. I'm not quite sure what constitutes to exactly how many "few" is to them, but I'll certainly find out more when he's discharged. On the other hand, our little girl Kaia has been incredibly emotional. As soon as his carrier was brought back yesterday evening empty, she just started crying. It's heart breaking. She's been walking around crying all day and she has even vomited her dinner. I'm sure she'll be so excited to see him when he gets home. |
Oh poor Kaia, she will be so happy to see her brother. And I'm sure he will be happy to see her as well. Please keep us posted on his progress. |
Awww. Tell her he's gonna be back. :) I hope he has an easy recovery! |
I'm so glad the surgery is over and that it went well! I'm hoping for a fast recovery! |
