Ear Problems, need some advice pls London is having some terrible ear problems... they started about 6 months ago... we thought that it was just because of the hair irritating her so we pulled the hair out and nursed her wounds... Well the problem is back... and it is worse. We are keeping the hair pulled out, but it isn't helping this time. Last time it was mainly her droopy ear but this time it is both. I am constantly cleaning them out and putting neosporin on them. It seems as if the poor things ears are on fire. She just walks around shaking her head. I am thinking that maybe it is allergies, but I am not sure, I know she doesn't have ear mites, so I am kinda at a loss. SO what do you all think? What should I do? :confused: |

Lola just recently went through this. Indeed hers is allergies. We had to use Otomax for a week and she's now on 1/4 tablet of regular Claritan twice a day. Let us know how you make out. |
It can be a bacterial ear infection, or a fungal infection... both very common and of course could be allergic. It is very important for you to take her to the vet and ask them to do a test to find out what type of infecction it is.... the treatment is diferent and if you put the wrong meds you can make the problem much worse... if it is fungal antibiotics will not help !!! check the net for ear infections in dogs and you will find out more about the diferent types.. How do you know it is not ear mites? you can not see them ... the vet can check for that but we do not see ie naked eye |
If it is bothering her to this extent, I would get to the vet asap. They can determine if there is an infection and there are ear ointments that treat both bacteria and fungus at the same time. Also, they can determine if an actual culture should be done. They should also rule out mites. I wouldn't wait too long - unchecked ear infections can lead to deafness. |

Don't pluck her ear hair!!!!! It's really bad for them and can make an infection worse because you are leaving those folicles open. Keep it CUT really short but don't pluck it whatever you do! My groomer told me this and she used to work at a vet, she's probably the smartest animal lady i know. |

Ear itching and hair loss! 4 Attachment(s) I'm at a loss! Mindy started really itching the past couple of weeks and I assumed it was her dry skin or maybe allergies. It has become so bad that her hair is coming out and she has lost her ear hair. There is no smell, or brown mess in her ear a all. Her inner ear is red from scratching but no blood or wax. I hear that it can be expensive for treatment at the vet but of course I will run to my Vet asap but before I do this, is there something I can do to help her itching? hair loss? How much does the treatment cost? Here are a few photos of the back of her ears. She may look wet or oily due to me just cleaning her ears. Please help! Tell me what this look likes to you. |

This baby needs a Vet ASAP. I think it looks like yeast but can tell for sure by pictures. If it is yeast you need meds from a vet. Do Not try to use human yeast meds on your dog. I hope you can get this baby to a vet very soon. I also would not use any ear wash in the ears until you find out for sure what it is as you can actually cause more irritation. |
I'm up so late just watching her sleep. It breaks my heart to see her in discomfort. I am taking her to the vet first thing in the morning snow storm and all! |

Also if it is yeast then most likely caused by food allergies. Ask the vet about that tomorrow as well. You may need to change to a hypoallergenic food. |
