Jemma is salivating really bad Yesterday the doctor put her on Metrondidazole, 250 mg once a day. She's 4 pounds. Last night I saw her face was really wet. Thought she got her face in the water bowl. But this afternoon she was with me out and no water available but her mouth was all wet again. I towel dried it and combed it out. Next thing I know, she was all wet again. I looked up the med and saw one of the side effects is excessive salivating, am I spelling this word right? Her stool since yesterday has already returned to normal at her last poop about 2 hours ago. Do you think I should cut the pill in half and give her 125 in the Am and then 125 PM, or stop it altogether? Replies are appreciated. |
do you have an ER vet you can call? I would try to get an opinion before cutting back- however, the salivating would worry me as well. If you can't get an opinion- and the meds were for diarrhea- which you said is gone- i'd stop the pill- but that's just what i would do |
Yup she had the runs but had a bacteria infection. Can't say the name. But Wellness dog food was her only change. The vet said this upset/irritated her intestines and caused this. I did do it slowly too! He said this isn't the first time he had some dogs come in with the same problem on Wellness. He also told me to make sure the food I get next is not real high in protein. Think I'll stop it till Monday. This only started late last night. That could have been from her drinking water. But today it was bad and the only place we went this morning was to the groomers. I've read that this medicine works really well too. |

I'm sorry I should have explained the low protein. He meant not in the 30's or 40's. Some of the 6 star foods have that much in them. I went to the pet stor and looked. He told me that high protein can lead to some pancreitis in small dogs. So I changed her to Canidae |

You are right!!!!!. I went and pulled the vet papers. I also told him he needs to write everything down for me. He said high fat, especially in small breeds is a no no. But he also said NOT a high protein either. I called his office and told them of the dog food I chose for her. He said that food is fine, better than the Wellness for her. He also said now is the time to do the change while she's on the meds. Thank you so much for your replies!! :D |
Can someone please help me with the proper dosage for Jemma. The vet gave her 250 mg, once a day. I've been researching and nowhere can I find that 250mg are given to 4 pound dogs. OMG, could she be overdosed???? Am I reading the internet wrong. Anybody, somebody. I did not give it to her today and I'm not going too. |
My pup has gastro problems also he weighs in at 5LBS. The vet put him on Metronidazole tabs. KC gets 2 pills a day and the pills are 50MG each. 10 pills total were in the script. My pup is doing much better...we think he may have gotten into something at my son's graduation party. Hope your pup feels better soon. snow |
OMG 50mg 2 x a day. Total 100mg. Here Jemma was given 250mg at one shot. STUPID ASS VET!!!! And everday for 5 days. I am so pist right now. She could get liver damage because it concentrates there. I'll be on the phone first thing in the Am with that vet!! Thank you for the replies |
Just wanted to add that my vet did take two snap tests for pancrentitis and Garadia(sp?) and both came back negative. snow |

I've researched the internet on overdoses of this med. There is no antidote for this med. All they can do is treat the symptoms of it. She is drinking and she is eating. Her breathing is normal. She is not getting it today. I'm so mad I already called the vet and left him a message. |
Different dogs do well on different foods. Some foods are just too rich for some dogs. And then there is the consideration of what ingredients work well for what dogs, etc. I would say 50mg twice a day sounds like a better dose. However, it looks like 1800petmeds is saying the usually dose is 3-23mg per pound 1-4 times a day. If the maximum dose was given, it would be well over 250mg, just not all in one dose. |
