So sorry to hear that your little one is going through all of this. Did some research and found this, hope it helps. The usual dose of metronidazole in dogs is 3mg to 23mg per pound one to four times a day. So 23mg*4lbs*4 times a day=368 mg, so your are getting under the maximum dosage . However, that being said, I would still contact my vet about the salivating, that would give me cause for concern. It may be totally nothing, but it is not worth taking the chance. Please keep us posted. |
My girl, Ginger, is on 125mg/day (250mg pill, 1/4 twice daily for 5 days). She is 10 pounds. She also has a bacterial infection. Hope your pup is better soon. |
Maybe 250 at one shot is too much for her. Maybe the vet should have spread it out thru the day. What a dummy |
The Pill Book This is a really handy book to have. There is one book for people and this one is the "Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat". I don't always trust what I find on the internet. It tells what each drug is used for, the dosages, drug interactions and the side effects.:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Maddie has been on Metronidazole and she gets 1/4 of a 250 mg tablet once daily, which would amount to about 60 mg. Even that amount has always done the trick for Maddie when needed, and it usually only takes a day to notice improvement. The dosage for your little one seems very high to me, especially when she is salivating as you described. One thing we found out through trial and error, that when Maddie is on that, I have to wean her off slowly, or her symptoms return. I will say a prayer for Jemma. I hope there is no damage from this, what seems to be, a high dose. Poor baby! |
How do you wean her off slowly? |
Just checking in to see what the vet said. |
I stopped giving Jemma that med. Late last night she seemed much better, this morning back to her old self. Vet never called. Had one of the nurses call me to stop the med...hellllllllloooooo, I stopped it already. He was too chicken sh&% to call himself. Thank you for asking!!! |
