Emergency overnight because of gum
 
I just wanted to ask everyone to say a little prayer for Lola... she pulled some Trident (containing xylitol) out of my purse early this morning and ate it... she's now staying overnight at the emergency vet. She's stable but I'm still so worried, this is my first night without her since I got her.

Also, I didn't know that sugar-free gum was harmful to dogs... I literally did a google search when she ate it, just because I was curious, and yorkietalk.com came up with some threads which talked about the dangers of xylitol. That's what prompted me to call the vet. In a sense, this website might have saved Lola! So thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for being such a great resource to me and to each other. I am very grateful for all of you today.

Hope your little girl recovers fast, and I'm so glad you acted fast. I think this is one of the most unknown dangers, we really need to spread the word. I hope you will share your story with others, and especially new mommies. My prayers are with you and Lola!

I will keep Lola in my prayers. Thank God for YT. When I read about xylitol on here I banned it from my house.

You are not alone. So many people are not aware of the dangers of sugarless gum. Thank heavens you did a search and found out it was dangerous.

I really appreciate this post, because I never would have known about the dangers of sugarless gum! I will make sure to keep my purse up on a table!

I am so glad that I read this, I chew only trident and I would have never thought that it would be bad.......prayers for Lola.

It is fortunate that you did your research about this! And acted ASAP , taken care of your precious Lola baby. I hope she is going to be ok. How scary for this to happen :(
I don't have any of that stuff in my house, I know if I did Suzi would be the first one to find it! She has a habit of going through my pockets! ANd Suzi has found Tums before , these little Yorkies are clever.

I never knew it either until I went to the vet the other day and saw a poster of bad food for dogs and gum was on there.
Bella has eaten gum out of my purse before. Not much, but I didn't notice any side effects and was unaware of the danger at the time.

prayers for you and your baby.i wonder if the gum also binds up their bowels.? thank god you cared enough to check out if the gum was poison for the puppy. and what is the vet doing just watching lola?or is there some treatment going on?did she have some signs of a problem?:(

It's the xylitol in many types of sugarless gum, that is thought to be deadly.

There also appears to be a link between liver failure and xylitol.

Dr, Eric Dunayer, a toxicology specialist at the center, told the Journal of the Veterinary Medical Association in 2006 that the center was starting to hear of cases where symptoms occured even when dogs ate smaller amounts of the artificial sweetner. In these instances, the signs of problems might be delayed as much as 12 hours.

Bottom line: If your dog gets into your sugarless gum, candy or baked goods, call your veterinarian immediately Sugarless gum is toxic to dogs.
Because there are sometimes no symptoms for the first 12 hours, many people think that their dog is ok, and delay treatment until it is often too late.
