I was hoping there would be an update. I hope everything is ok. |
Poor baby ): . I didnt know gum was bad for dogs ( not that mine have ever had it ) . But its good to know now just in case. Hope your little one is home with you soon (: |
Good morning everyone - I was waiting to give you all an update until this morning when I could speak to Lola's vet. She is doing fine, but her glucose levels are a little lower than they'd like - she's had a glucose drip intravenously since yesterday, so they would expect her glucose levels to be high/normal, when in actuality they are low/normal. So I can't go pick her up yet. :( She said hopefully this afternoon or tonight. While she's been there basically she has just had the IV for glucose to keep her blood sugar levels up, and they have been testing her levels every four hours or so. They're also going to test her liver levels sometime today and then I'll need to bring her back in tomorrow. But apparently she is getting LOTS of attention by the staff (because who doesn't love sweet little yorkies?!) and has been a real trooper. It is shocking that eating less than one piece of trident has cost almost $1200 and a day and a half in the ER. She's only 2.8 lbs, so ANY amount of xylitol can be fatal... the other scary thing about xylitol is that there are no "rules" about how it affects dogs; two dogs of the same size and breed could be affected completely differently. I hope that everyone can learn from my mistake and keep anything containing xylitol out of your house or up very far from where your baby could get it. It's been a scary few days but luckily my little girl is going to be fine. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers, Lola and I appreciate it! I'll post an update when I bring her home. |
I am so happy to read this update for Lola :). You're a good Mama for acting so quickly. You're right, xylitol is very scary and dangerous. So many people don't know this. |
seems it is toxic for humans too :) Xylitol is a sugar alcohol which is a "wood" sugar! Do we see people going around eating trees? It has the potential to cause bloating , gas, and diarrhea in humans! Now, "IF" it may cause diarrhea in people then this may mean that it may cause the persons body to become too Acidic! Now, if the persons body may become too Acidic so as to cause diarrhea, then this may mean that it also may "STEAL" Oxygen from the body! Now, what happens when we run out of Oxygen? How long can we live without Oxygen? We would probably be better to use the White sugar, rather than to eat Xylitol, which is a wood alcohol sugar! Check on a bottle of wood alcohol and see the warning lables about not ingesting it into our body, for it may "KILL" us, and then decide "IF" we want to continue to use Xylitol! We would be better to buy whole cane sugar which has it's molasses still in it, it may cost more, but it is good for us, "IF" it contains the molasses still in it! It is called several different names, but it is the sugar cane just evaporated down without the Blackstrap Molasses removed, and it taste real good, but we will have to pay more for it up front! But , "IF" we choose to use the white sugar or the artifical sweeteners, which cost less, then we will just "PAY" for it latter on with Sickness and Disease! Cause and Effect ! "WE" are What "WE" Eat ! |
Wow.....I didn't know that Trident had that ingredient either!! I know that this site has informed me on numerous things.....Even if I don't have a question I still pop in to see what is being talked about!! I love this place:) Lucky's Mommy...... |
Sure glad your story had a happy ending:) |
I am so glad Lola is going to be ok. thank goodness. Thank you for updating us. Poor baby has been through a lot in the past week ! hope she can come home very soon! my prayers and thoughts are with her , and you. :aimeeyork |
I'm so happy your little one is okay. :) |
are Tums poison to dogs..my kati got hold of a little piece of one and i couldn't get it away from her but she didn't seem to have a reaction to it..she too is always trying to get in my purse |
Is it only Xylitol that is toxic? Allie got into some gum today, but it got stuck in her "beard" before she could eat it. We had to cut it out of her hair, and I know she didn't ingest any. The gum she had used the sweetener sorbitol, not xylitol. Hubby thinks I am overreacting, but I keep watching her... So far she's fine. |
sorbital is used in dog vitamins and toothpastes..of course quantity is the question? |
I'm so happy your little one is okay. thanks for updating us. |
We will pray for both of u [QUOTE=LittleLolaBear;2679032]I just wanted to ask everyone to say a little prayer for Lola... she pulled some Trident (containing xylitol) out of my purse early this morning and ate it... she's now staying overnight at the emergency vet. She's stable but I'm still so worried, this is my first night without her since I got her. Also, I didn't know that sugar-free gum was harmful to dogs... I literally did a google search when she ate it, just because I was curious, and yorkietalk.com came up with some threads which talked about the dangers of xylitol. That's what prompted me to call the vet. In a sense, this website might have saved Lola! So thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for being such a great resource to me and to each other. I am very grateful for all of you today.[/QUOTE This why I join this web site, we will pray for both of u please keep us info on how it turn out, god bless ! bark@u later , manina, miley:aimeeyorkand Max:aimeeyork |
